Back then we had our own documents and oaths. Just because there was no paper doesnt mean there wasnt a binding thing /Covenant. Back then it a social/societal contract.... We have lost that social responsibility so thats why the national law comes in. There was still divorce in the old days and there was procedure that was still not that easy to work around.
