To steal a line from Mike Tyson himself - back in 1998: "When you are in the ass-kicking business, sometimes you are on the receiving end."

Maybe the biggest difference between Tyson and Ali was how they handled adversity. Scrolling through the comments here, a lot of people are making all kind of excuses for why Tyson was beaten. But the fact remains that after that fight Tyson was never a factor again. Ali was beaten after being exiled for 3 1/2 years for political reasons, lost his speed, timing, and reflexes during the exile, and had to adopt a completely different fighting style, and won the title 2 more times. If Tyson had had the courage and heart of Ali, he could have been champ for another decade. But he didn't.

I doubt a short fighter like that can adapt well to losing most of his tools, like speed and endurance as he had when he was in prime. Ali could fight in so-so shape and still win, that's not possible when you have the built of a brick.

Buster Douglas, at 6'4" 220lbs. for that one moment in time, was the baddest man on the planet!

I watched that fight on pay per view with my grandmother in Detroit back in the day. Have to say it was the best pure boxing match I have every seen and made me a huge Buster Douglas fan. Not only did he squarely whip Tyson but he did it when Tyson was thought to be unbeatable. Great lesson in life there and it doesn't matter what Buster's career was afterwards, he motivated a lot of young men like myself. Thanks Buster for a great memory shared with you!

One of boxing's greatest moments, as far as I'm concerned. I still remember jumping off my couch, cheering, when Tyson went down. I immediately called my dad, who was just as happy as I was. "Did you see him searching around the canvas for his mouthpiece?!" Buster Douglas is a hero, delivered by fate to the right place at the right time.

Buster Douglas, while he had the belt, read an article about a young boy with terminal cancer who said he was going to beat the cancer and took his inspiration from what Buster Douglas had achieved. The Champ told his driver, "Get the car". He drove for half a day to the hospital this kid was lying in and walked into his room. If that ain't a TRUE champion, I don't know what is..

After the death of Cus d'Amato and the shit with Robin Givens, Mike was never the same again. Kevin Roony did an excellent job but he and the team were replaced with influence of Don King. The rest is history.

The reason why he lost fights is because he fought people who where better fighters then him.

Tyson was destroyed by his own personal instability and the greed of those that surrounded him after the death of "Cus" D'Amato. If ever there was a boxer of pure, raw talent, it was Mike Tyson. But raw talent without focus and restraint is like a blade without an edge or a grip. Without someone to provide him with the proper guidance, Tyson became nothing more than an unwieldy, blunt instrument run amok in his own house. I also find it likely that Tyson was an undiagnosed example of bipolar disorder from the start, with only D'Amato's care and direction keeping him in check as long as it did.

Douglas lives in my area. I've met him a couple times. Cool dude, but I get the impression he doesn't like having his entire life revolve around this one fight. Can't say I blame him.

He was on meds. Don King talked him into getting on manic depression meds. It had him like a zombie.

Absolutely beautiful heartfelt moment for Buster. For Tyson, a lesson in humility that, unfortunately, he quickly forgot.

Tyson has rebuilt his Image. He's a very loved and respected man here in Vegas. He's a very public figure and is opening small businesses in the area.

This is the first time i've ever just said that was a good video after watching one. Damn good job.

Buster Douglas, a man with respect and love in his corner. He had the right formula but primarily he had the heart and soul of a fighter and a man. Tyson had talk.

Just wanna say thanks for all these perfectly edited pre fight build up videos. All these big fights bring back so many good memories of all these blockbuster fights when boxing was enjoying a massive resurgence thanks to guys like Tyson, Hagler, Hearns, Holyfield, Lewis etc etc and even polarizing figures like Naseem Hamed who the Americans loved to hate, lol. How I wish some new fighters like those guys would come around again and save boxing from the modern, strategic fighters of today such as Money Mayweather. Great at what he does sure, a master at it. But the reality is, best record or not, Floyd can't hold a candle to the exciting fighters from this era. Being a brit I never really followed Basketball either but thanks to your videos, that have got me interested, I'm learning FAST! lol. So thanks again and please keep these awesome videos coming.

+Terrance Adrian you echo everything I feel about boxing nowadays. The people who are champions now would be nowhere the top 10 in those days. Tyson Fury against Ali/Norton/Frazier/Liston/Lewis/ even Bugner !! Bugner fought Ale.. lost on Points. He fought Frazier and almost had him in the 14th rd but lost on points.. Totally agree with you. The same has happened with music. Where are the stars of todays guitarists ? Clapton/Page/Stevie ray/Jeff beck/Brian jones /Pete Towndsend and of course.. gos !!! Jimi Hendrix. The bands that pull the best audience at the moment? The Rolling Stones/ Pink Floyd/ The Who and so on are all in their 60's and 70's. It's the modern digital age. Too many people with fat asses from sitting all day.. rant over .. sorry about the change of direction but trying to give my honest thoughts.. Thanks Terrance

Harry Herming If you mean bad as in "immature, completely lacking in self-control, over-inflated sense of self-worth" then I agree 100%. Who has Tyson beaten? Trevor Berbick? An old Larry Holmes? An ancient Buster Mathis? When he fought the top tier fighters he lost to the top tier fighters.

I love Mike Tyson, but Buster is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. He taught me to box and throw a punch correctly in Columbus, Ohio, and I will always be indebted to him for that.

Douglas had a lot of natural ability, but didn't have that burning desire that it takes to be great. Unfortunately for Tyson, the one time Douglas really pulled it all together, was the time Tyson let his preparation slip. Tyson trained to fight a bum, but found himself in the ring with an elite fighter.

back then, I was going into the Newport mall in Jersey City ,N.J. and saw Tyson driving BMW arguing with the cops for not having the proper docs and driving recklessly, the he saw a guy watching nearby and asked him if he wanted the car, the guy replied yes and Tyson said he could have it, took a cab and left, drugs?, maybe , definitely crazy.

mike was the kind of man that needed good people around him for support when it stopped don king took the piss and played a big part in mikes unravelling.

For those arguing for a long count; Douglas hits the canvass at 10:25 of this video. the referee kneels down and starts counting immediately. As he is counting, he does look back to make sure Tyson is in the neutral corner. At WORST, you could say the ref's count was deliberate. But, it's clear that Douglas was waiting until the last possible moment to get up; and could've stood up sooner if needed. Not the first ref in history with a deliberate count and not the first boxer in history to wait until the 9 count to stand up. Mike Tyson, without question, is a better boxer than James 'Buster' Douglas. But, on THAT night, in Japan, Douglas clearly BEAT Mike Tyson. Really, he whipped Tyson's ass. Douglas got his punches off and landed combinations against Tyson like NO ONE had before. AND, Douglas' victory laid the ground work and served as a blue print for defeating Tyson in future fights. The bigger, longer fighters learned how to keep Tyson off w/ the jab and frustrate him into mistakes. Obviously, Mike Tyson, the boxer, that we knew in the '80's didn't show up for THIS fight. But, that's not Buster Douglas' fault. And, he took full advantage.

Tyson was never anything more than a machine. Like all machines, when the curators of that machine abandon it, the decay begins. Had Tyson stayed with those who demanded the work ethic, created the healthy environment, and supported his well being - things would have been much different. I don't think anyone questions the fact that a fit and fully prepared Tyson destroys any version of Buster Douglas, but the reality is that Tyson was, and remains, his own worst enemy. What could have been is fascinating to debate, but unfortunately we are left to what has happened and Tyson's fall is a cautionary tale of talent gone to waste. In hindsight, knowing Tyson's mentality after the fact, this reality was completely unavoidable. There was never a good end for Tyson. He was, and always will be that guy who could have been the greatest ever and he owes most of that to those who nurtured his God-given abilities, though had he stuck with Rooney and Cayton it might have delayed the inevitable a while longer.

Great Fight Douglas, if the ref hadn't waited until nearly FIVE this would be a different conversation, it wasn't just that Tyson was exposed, LOOK at ALL THE SHIT THEY DID to him to protect Rocky Marciano's record, Marciano fought his COUSIN...TWICE to earn his Great Hope Moniker.

I see what you mean regarding similar styles. Frazier had that wicked left hook, though. No disrespect to Tyson, or his fans, but I grew up with Ali-Frazier from the time I was able to understand the sport as a young kid. I was 11-years-old when Ali fought Frazier for the first time in MSG. Their epic trilogy of fights is legendary.

Mike Tyson never had an answer for a devastating jab, not ever. Unfortunately most boxers of that era didn't have a "devastating" jab for Mike to face. In his prime, Mike still couldn't handle a jab from boxers such as Douglas, Holyfield, Lewis or the Klitchko brothers. Both brothers would have mauled him with solid jabs.

BUster was a one hit wonder. Tyson gave the fight away because of his own inner tumoil comprised of many factors. I used to be a pretty good street fighter until i wasnt. Age and lack of fire eventually catch up to onself and its always a surpise that one must accept in order to move on in life.

Buster wouldn't have beaten the Tyson of old. The disciplined and none controversial Tyson. The Tyson who had his original management team behind him, keeping him out of trouble and protecting him from all the worlds leeches that eventually drained him of all his money and talent.

Douglas was a good fighter, on a good day, and he beat a great fighter on not quite his sharpest day. Tyson's lack of sharpness and conditioning on that day are perhaps exaggerated. Mike would always have potentially had problems with a big guy with a good jab and belief in himself (for once). Combined with complacency and an amateurish corner-team lacking in authority, the potential for trouble was there, even if we all thought Tyson's undoubted talent would be too much for Douglas.

Stop making excuses and credit where credit is due... Douglas destroyed Tyson. End of story.

Douglas had a great night in boxing and Tyson had a great career. The fact he threw it away (talent and money) is irrelevant. Hardest hitting guy we have ever seen and another one would be a billionaire with proper prep and the brains to deal with all that talent.

HIs mother inspired him and gave him the power to beat tyson.. Yeah maybe tyson took the fight lightly but that was the best buster ever fought in his entire career.. He was motivated the most he ever been in his life.. He fought a perfect fight.. He would have beaten anyone that day i believe.

Wasn't a major Tyson fan in his heyday. I was more into Holyfield and was chopping at the bit to see Holyfield and Tyson clash after this match. Expecting Tyson to mop the floor with this dude, like he did so many before, but was elated to find out about the upset. I will say this about Tyson, someone said he's barely top 50 among the greatest. It's America and that's your opinion but I sure hope you're not putting "Mouthy" Mayweather ahead of him...Up until this fight and he had more stuff going on outside of the ring than he did inside during a nice portion of his reign and as much I hate to admit it, he owned boxing during 85/86-89, a host of 1st round knockouts, the most feared in the ring and the youngest to be crowned heavyweight champion at the time.

as much as i love Mike, he was a disgrace to the sport. just because of the way he fucked up what he had, what he achieved and how many millions of people he made love him and boxing. i can only imagine the pain his die hard fans were going through watching it all happening as adults, as it happened.

A lot of bizarre pseudo-psychological stuff flies around when looking back at Tyson's strengths and vulnerabilities. A prominent belief is that the key to beating Tyson in his heyday was to 'show no fear', 'stand up to the bully' and other such utterly meaningless platitudes. By this logic, are we to assume then that every fighter Tyson ever defeated, at least those equipped theoretically with the physical tools to beat him, were too inhibited by fear to properly throw punches and effect their game plan. I somehow doubt it. I suggest their losses can be explained by much more specifically boxing -related reasons.
