Box kites & sleds in a strong wind
Спорт
My 1,906th kite video. After a return to winter conditions for a few days, spring started to show itself again in NZ and we were able to fly a few kites in a strong, cold wind. If you're counting the kites, I forgot to mention the second French Military from Gomberg Kites, which was flown by Peter.
Anyone wanting to check out all my "How to..." videos on various aspects of kite-flying can now find them all easily on my Playlist at / jimskitesnz .

I don't fly boxes very often, but they are certainly good in these conditions. The only thing I don't like is that most of them have a lot of spars and take time to assemble.
" Time and tide wait for no man". Pleased you had some time to enjoy a great selection of box kites and sleds. What a contrast to the snow a few days before. Look forward to joining you when next possible.

Let's hope we don't have to wait too long for that, Carl.
Love high wind kite flying and the box kites, especially the one without the tail. Love the Sun Oak kites. I gave the farmer behind my home a large framed KAP print of his farm before he retired and he went up to his attic pulled out a Sun Oak delta that I still fly to this day.

That was a good exchange, Jim. The Sun Oak kites are built to last. I have two of their big 14ft delta conynes also, and they are great fliers.
Beautiful display! Good for you two braving the cold wind! I live in Illinois, USA and some of our neighboring states (Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin-and probably more!) have winter kite festivals on frozen lakes! I love watching the displays via KZread postings - but don’t think I’m brave enough to join in person! ❄️☃️🪁

I think frozen lakes would be too much for me - maybe when I was younger I would have tried it, but at my age I like to keep warm whenever possible.
Wow ! Snow in October ...... ♡ ♡ ♡

Fortunately it didn't last long, Nara. Three days later, the temperature was 25 degrees - crazy weather!
Lovely blue sky Jim, look forward to seeing more of that as our weather here starts to turn.

It was still very cold, David, but today (Sunday) was more like summer! The weather is certainly very changeable.
Nice video Jim. It looks gusty. Box kite seems to like it. I hope that's the last snow. Thanks Jim!

There was still a little snow visible on the nearby hills today, Dewey, but I don't think we'll get any more falls. It was very warm today (Sunday), and more like summer. The weather is really crazy these days.
We had almost the same kind of winds here in Wisconsin today. Still fun flying even if it was a little crazy. 😀

Yes, flying is (almost) always fun, and we have to put up with whatever conditions we get. Today (Sunday) was like summer, so we just never know what to expect.
Super! KAPing is actually yet. Especially in areas where are drones currently forbidden.

Unfortunately, kites are banned in some places, too! Useful in most places, though.
Still need to get mine up! These look gorgeous, thank you for sharing Jim!!

I don't believe you'll ever fly that kite, Abby!

@@JimNicholls I'm starting to think so too, but it'll get up sometime or another
Nod to Peter on the fuzzy tail - wise choice in high wind
@JimNicholls

You might have noticed we had fuzzy tails on almost all the kites, which are definitely the best thing to use.
Looks like your wind conditions were similar to what we were experiencing. It kind of takes the fun out when you are struggling to keep things in the air.

I probably wouldn't have been flying, Ken, except it had been too long since the last time so we just decided to fly anyway. The weather changes so much from day to day, and the forecasters seem to have no idea of what's happening.

I agree JIm. I love it when they say “breezy” then we get 20 mph + winds. I would hate to see their idea of “windy”.
Almost at 2,000 videos Jim! Any ideas how you'll commemorate?

Andrew, with 93 videos to go, and with my 82nd birthday occurring today, I am not even thinking of the possibility of reaching that figure. My video production has slowed down in recent times, mainly due to unsettled weather, but also a slight lessening of my enthusiasm. I did put on a big show for my 1,000th video, but that seems unlikely to be repeated.
Excellent show as usual Jim. The box kites do 'show' well. A question about a previous video. Having seen your 21' skeletons I figure I 'need' one ha ha. How did you sort the new moving eyes please?
@JimNicholls

The idea for the Skeleton's eyes came from a very clever man in Japan. See his KZread channel for details: kzread.info .

@@JimNicholls Many thanks Jim. Fair winds and fun flying to you !!!
I know I have asked you this before, but I can't find the video where I commented. Jim, what are you using to shoot your videos? I recall you mentioning something about sand in your camera?

I use an Olympus OM-D EM 5 mk. ll but that's an old model and there is now the mk. lll. It's great for my purposes and is protected against rain and dust, but of course nothing's perfect.
Nice display must be nice not having to pack lots of anchors instead using what nature provides, hope no-one got wet feet
@JimNicholls

Thanks, Colin. We always try to use the big bits of driftwood, much easier than digging holes for sand anchors (and no big deal when dogs pee on them!) All kites were retrieved before the tide got too far in.
