Laurencio Rutherfodio games like M&L:BIS and Super Paper Mario have the best representations of Bowser. In those games, he’s more like Mario’s rival. Everyone in the mushroom kingdom hates him, but he’s not evil. The best part is that in those games he fights on Mario’s side purely because some other villain is stealing his thunder and HE wants to be the villain.

Bowser's a lot like old cartoon antagonists like Bluto or Pegleg Pete, where their "evilness" varies from story to story. Sometimes they're an outright villain committing nefarious deeds, other times they're just simply a bully or rival. Even Mario is similar to Popeye (and Mickey Mouse to an extent) in the sense that, while he's primarily known for one specific occupation (plumber and sailor, respectively), he'll often be seen inexplicably taking on other occupations such as doctor, go-kart racer, tennis player, cement factory worker, archaeologist, etc. That's not even mentioning the fact that Mario was originally created as a stand-in for Popeye in what would come to be known as Donkey Kong.

M&L Bowser is my favorite portrayal.

The thing is that I’m one of the few people who don’t mind Smash Bowser. While he doesn’t reflect the same “personality” (and I use that term loosely because the Mario characters have as much personality as a rock) as Mario Bowser, in a way, I think this is the point. Since Smash Bros. is a fighting game, it makes a lot more sense for him to resemble a fearsome, intimidating beast because it suits a fighting game a lot better and makes him seem more like a powerful creature rather than just a an oversized turtle. It’s the same reason why DK makes realistic gorilla noises rather than the “ahehehe!” from Mario Kart and Mario Party. And Giga Bowser himself is a manifestation of when Bowser becomes bigger and badder than before once you defeat him once in a lot of Mario games...just with a more fearsome design since simply fighting Bowser with a couple Super Mushrooms would be pretty lame. As for why he’s changed so many times over the years...well, that’s what happens when you’re one of the oldest and most reoccurring villains and videogames. And go from pummeling your sworn enemy to playing sports and riding go-karts with him.

Sakurai has generally a knack for making non-human characters even less human. Besides DK and Bowser Yoshi, Diddy and King K. Rool also behave more animalistic, while Mega Man looks and behaves more robotic.

Bowser's Inside Story Bowser is only true Bowser. We have the better design but he has a voice that's a great mix of beastly and bully, and it depicts the better design in a more badass light. Kenny James is THE Bowser. He fuckin' picks up giant boulders and stuff. Rad.

I actually kinda like Smash's portrayal of Bowser. At least now that he actually resembles his canon form. It blends all the parts that make Bowser such a lovable character while giving him a dangerous and imposing edge that makes you see him as a genuine threat. Really it's in perfect line with how Mario is portrayed in Smash and naturally depicts them as rivals due to their similar demeanor within this universe.

@@guyudontno7689 I personally believe that the reason they don't have their canon voices is because Smash treats the characters more seriously, take Mario for example he has more serious and angry expressions, his clothes are darked and have more detail, and most imporantly is fighting with real punches and not really about jumping on an enemy's head. In his canon games, Mario is everything listed here but reversed. That can be a logical reason why is like that.

@@yogamer.1583 These logistics would make sense, but Smash Bros. has been attempting to portray characters more accurately since Smash 4. Some examples of this include Yoshi and Bowser standing upright, Luigi running like he does in Luigi's Mansion, Wario having his shoulder charge from Wario Land, Link having an iconic dodge roll, and Ganondorf using his sword. About Mario, he hasn't only been serious in Smash Bros. Mario Strikers is one of the spin-off games where Mario had a more serious attitude, and that game dates back to the GameCube era.

You know, it would be so easy to make comparisons here and there, but at the end of the day you are just too good. There is a certain atmosphere in humorous presentation that isn't too common, and often it can be overdone even while still being funny. You don't overdo it, though, and I think that's what makes you the best current representative of the sort of humor that has this particular "feel" to it.

My favorite of his roles is the Paper Mario trilogy. He’s diabolical in The first one, Hilarious in TTYD, and is a great trash talker In SPM.

Crono Sapien Actually, they ARE the same character, with the exception of Four Swords Adventure. Each of the three timelines just has different outcomes for him - one in which he dies forever because of the Triforce, one in which he dies but gets “reincarnated” (as far as we know) once so far, and one in which he becomes Ganon the demon pig.

LukerGamerz Yeah, that’s why I said different incarnations. Each Zelda game has their own spin on Ganon due to them following a chronological timeline, hence why he’s had many different interations. It’s like how in most Metroid games Ridley appears as a boss, but it’s a different incarnation of Ridley than the last one despite being the same character (save for Other M where he’s a clone.) But with Mario this isn’t the case since the games are rarely connected chronologically and the timeline is...questionable, to say the least.

@@TheMack625 agreed. I really like the voice touch ups and the fact that if you get touched as fire Mario, you don't shrink back to small Mario like in the original SNES game. Also the intro animation and music makes me smile to this day.

I don't mind the the portrayal of Bowser in the GameCube era. I do like the characterization in the game Bowser's Inside Story and I think that Bowser should talk a bit. I think a lot of people like his characterization in RPGs/side games more than the mainline games.

But, Dream Team had Bowser backstabbing another villain to remain the spotlight and Paper Jam had two Bowsers who couldn't get along over the 'real one', so either your understanding of Bowser is flawed, or your opinion in games is.

OP People who don't like the fact that he still sounds like Godzilla. Like me.

Bowser's the same Bowser, he just wants the Mario series cancelled so no one else has to a victim of meme porn. So he's trying everything he can, such as humanizing to make himself not seem like a villain, giving the player no drive to complete the game. Eventually, we'll get Super Mario family where instead of him kidnapping Peach, he'll get in a nice suit, ask her to go out and get to know each other, and asks Mario for tips because Mario's been with Peach for a while. Mario's just fine with it because Bowser's eaten so much shit over the years he deserves to settle down with the princess. Luigi starts a paranormal investigation show with E. Gadd and gets with Daisy, and Mario's left on his own. he's happy though because he knows everyone else is too. Then, eventually, the universe collapses and is reborn again like in Galaxy and everything starts over.

Important to note here: becoming a father really mellowed Bowser out. He became a lot more of a likable oaf after Bowser Jr. was introduced, since now they had scenes of him bonding with his son at the end of Super Mario Sunshine. It's harder to dehumanize a character when he has an intensely human characteristic -- love for his child. So instead of making Bowser a monster, they made him a dad. The Mario RPGs of the mid-aughts frequently depict Bowser as out of his league, meddling into forces he doesn't quite understand. In other words, he's your dad coming into the basement to check up on you kids right as you're about to beat your friend in Smash, and he distracts you and you lose the stock. He's not a villain, he's just kind of a doof. A lovable doof.

LogicalFool It’s the perfect way to start off, actually. A 2-D Mario game that brings Mario back to his roots for the first time in the decade, while at the same time introducing new power-ups and elements that weren’t in previous 2-D Mario games *and* I can take it on the go? Sign me the hecc up! The sequels tho...eh.

look, i love the game... but like bowser burning alive kinda scared me.

How about this: who ever said there was only ONE Bowser?

Bowser from the first Paper Mario is my absolute favorite portrayal, and the one I use for my own main villain in the world I'm working on. He's a serious threat, one that can do a lot of damage if you don't take him seriously, but he can also be a bit of a goofball when he's not busy. He's someone you can see lose over and over again to the main hero, but also totally capable of coming up with a foolproof plan if he really put his mind to it.

This is honestly one of my favourite channels on KZread. Everything from the commentary, editing, timing with jokes hits home every time. It feels weird how in the spin-offs, bowser’s morality is a revolving door. In Mario Party DS, he does things to people who land on the bowser space… and also the Final 5 Turns event, which he helps the person in last place. This also happens in story mode too, so he literally helps the people THAT ARE TRYING TO STOP HIM. In the Party series he can also do a Bowser Revolution where he splits all the coins every player has evenly. Sometimes he says it’s because wealth isn’t everything, and sometimes he says it’s to help the less fortunate by giving every player a fair shot. His morality is a revolving door, and Nintendo chooses the side facing them at that time.

Off topic but it needs to be said lol. I wish they had done more to make Isabelle's moveset unique. The clipboard is iconic and could have been a flashy tilt attack instead of color swapped villager umbrella. Her down tilt instead of being grass picking could be her sweeping the floor with the broom that she uses as the up tilt. I just feel like she could have been a little bit more unique but she is still unique as Lucas is to Ness. All it takes is a few animation changes to make a character seem less like a clone, so im a little sad to see umbrellas, and turnips. It just feels less like Isabelle & more like Villager. I still I think she looks like a load of fun to play as even with these factors of similarity. The hammer I thought looked horrible at first but it's going to be great in Corners. It reminds me a lot of the classic fan item. I also really did not like the addition of the Villagers slingshot at first, but seems pretty good for range and all the gameplay Clips I've seen. Jumping to use it seems odd but just like with Villager its a small pet peeve. All in all, she looks very fun but I wish they would have taken the time to make her a little bit more unique with different items from the Animal Crossing universe.

Rohy I’m too lazy to read all that, but at least Isabelle is still pretty unique as far as “clone” characters go. She could’ve easily been an echo fighter despite having tons of unique abilities that she uses in her own games, a la Dark Samus...but instead she only shares several moves with Villager while the rest of her moveset is entirely different. Which I’m honestly glad for, since I didn’t think she was unique enough to be a new character, but not similar enough to Villager to be an echo fighter. After all, there’s only so much you can do to make a character who is as non-combative and out-of-place in a fighting game as Isabelle. Her being entirely mute on the other hand...idk if I’ll ever get used to that.

@@amirgarcia547 yeah I agree wholeheartedly. And her being mute is extremely odd. I was reading somewhere that people thought she was annoying in Mario Kart 8 and that it was a good thing she was muted but I disagree. Villagers also mute so I don't know why that is. I assume it's for a certain that's kept under ties in Sakurai studios. We will just never know. She's so vocal in the Animal Crossing games. Personally just wish some of the animations were changed that's the big one because keeping things like the umbrella and turnips just makes it seem more like a clone. I still plan on adding her to my group of mains. What a great time to be alive.

Rohy I’m glad we could come to a consensus then.👍🏽And I’m fine with Villager being mute since they’re the player character and have no spoken dialogue, but with Isabelle it just feels off to me. And I’m actually glad she still has those moves (along with the slingshot) since they’re some of Villager’s best moves, and the rest of her moveset seems wholly unique. In fact I’m not really a fan of Villager gameplay-wise, which’s why I’m more than excited to try out Isabelle!~ That and if any other Animal Crossing character was going to me made playable in Smash, it’d most definitely be her.

@@laffydaffy5133 Come on, consider are selves lucky that Animal Crossing is in Smash, because Sakurai at first didn't think that Animal Crossing would work in Smash. So the fact that Sakurai found a way to make it work is a miracle in of it self.

What's the difference between King Koopa and Bowser? Some people (yes, *those* people) tend to class them as two separate characters

His old design came from the NES game for the cartoons, but I didn't know his old design was used for King K. Rool

I'm a fan of what I call "dudebro bowser". The one who always boasts about how awesome he is and how strong he is while being simultaneously hammy, bumbling and threatening. This is the Bowser I imagine has an entire mini fridge filled with energy drinks and does even the pettiest shit in the name of evil.

Mario & Luigi Bowser is the definitive Bowser personality. He is really goofy, but he also stays true to form and tries his best to succeed. In games like Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team, he is actually a fairly big threat.

I like Wii Bowser’s voice.

Funny you mention the whole "resurrection making Bowser a soulless, instinctual monster" thing, because that's basically an almost exact summary of - well, not _Bowser_ per se, but Ganon in Zelda's Downfall timeline (essentially all the 2d games that aren't cel-shaded) where Twinrova's attempt to revive him at any cost destroys his mind. I wonder if that reference was intentional or just a _really_ nifty coincidence?

I just like it when he's portrayed as competent and at least kind of menacing. I love his appearance in Inside Story for this reason. Bowzilla may not be as menacing as Giga Bowser but he's definitely bigger and badder.

I think Bowser looks the way he does in Smash because of how the game really adds detail to make the characters look realistic as well as maintaining his old beast look, even Mario looks more real than in Odyssey, in the very first Smash Ultimate trailer, Bowser Jr though has only been in the modern games and never had a real or beasty look so maintains his more simpler appearance

Bowsers voice actually got deeper as time went on. Like how Mario’s video got less extracted cartoon voice.
