Bowls Delivery Sequence 04 The No Backswing Backswing

Спорт

Brief Description of The No Backswing Backswing.
The No Backswing Backswing is the fourth in the Get Fixed - Draw Sequence videos for aspiring Lawn Bowlers. For many years coaches have been pushing the pendular movement in their programs. Admittedly, during the first rewrites of the Level 1 Technical Lawn Bowls Manuals we kept the pendular movement in the program. It was not long, however, that we found a better way - and you may be shocked to see how wrong we were at the time about the pendulum!
In this video The Delivery Doctor will demonstrate just how many problems bowlers can find themselves in by using the pendular motion in their deliveries. From misalignment at the moment of release, to introduction of steeper angles during the swing, to the ensuing abbreviated follow throughs - they all lead to inconsistencies that result in failure.
In just under ten minutes The Delivery Doctor will guide you through the steps necessary to achieving a repeatable delivery for each and every length of shot you will play - and it all starts with the No Backswing Backswing!

    Spot on Alan! I too golf, and it wasn't until I got rid of my very long backswing and developed a follow through that I was able to consistently play with a mid single digit Hdcp. The follow through is the thing in pretty much every sport I have played. Bowls is no different. Drives me nuts when I hear the word pendulum used in Bowls! It's a greenskeepers nightmare!

    It’s actually a natural progression as a result of picking a Point of Aim further down the green, or at least a spot further along the line leading to the point of aim. It’s really all about visualization. Bowls is a game of touch!

    This is very logical,i have thought at times that i sort of manufacture a back swing, end up going back too far, so my body twists and I drag deliveries narrow and drop the wood also because my arm is out of synch 'with my lead foot, this takes away a variable, so thankyou for this, I will be off to practice today, once the weather clears a bit 😊

    Thanks Steve, and glad to hear you are clearing time for practice (purposeful practice). Too many people who bowl spend little or no time practicing skills I suppose they think will come naturally during a match. 🤔 osmosis maybe? 😂. With respect to the pendular backswing my biggest observation is that for the vast majority of bowlers it pulls the delivery side shoulder back and further out of alignment as they increase their backswing, and very few are able to get back ‘into the slot’ to enable them to deliver a smooth bowl at the moment of release - with the results being combos of dumping bowls, narrow bowls, over gripped bowls. The ‘No Backswing Backswing’ essentially keeps everything in square and provides a strong base from which to make the forward movement with moment of release more consistent and in line with one’s point of aim.

    HI Ferdinand. As per the Pre-Stance, I encourage bowlers to line up their bowl with the point of aim and then move to the mat, taking a comfortable stance such that the bowl is still lined up with the PoA. As long as your foot (or now, a piece of your shoe) is on or above the mat at stance and time of delivery, then you are good to go. A common mistake that is oft taught is to line up the foot first - and this leads, more often than not, to narrow bowls on the forehand. There is no one spot where a bowler should always place their foot. Sounds like I need a video to cover the many different reasons why your foot may be in a different spot on the mat - even in the same end. The green will dictate which line you want your bowl to travel, consequently dictating where your foot will end up. (More in this in a video)

    I don’t. We had some arms quite a few years back but they were not popular - price and other reasons - prodding us to develop our Ubi_Launcher. One thing about the arm is that you require grip strength - something aging bowlers have less of as they, well, age! My mom had arthritis and would never have been able to use one. Secondly, they require some shoulder joint fluidity so if one has ever had rotator cuff issues I wouldn’t advise it either. Lastly, I have seen bowls delivered improperly with the bowling arm whose first contact with the green is some 8’ to 10’ in front of the bowler - divots!! I’m not saying it’s not a useful device - just that we believe we have something in the Ubi_Launcher that is far more practical, less expensive, lighter, and better suited to more bowlers who require a delivery aid.

    Hi Andrew. Good question. This one is another one of those things that happens naturally for me, not something I try to do as part of the delivery. As a curler, and although I live more in the mid to eastern part of Canada (Ontario), other curlers thought I was from western Canada - because I deliver with what is referred to as a western tuck - very low to the ice surface. Again, not something I do on purpose but I found it comfortable and efficient. In bowls my knee may touch the ground but I’m not kneeling on the ground. Pretty sure this wouldn’t go over well come laundry day - you know - big patch of dirt on my right knee after every game. How low you get depends on your flexibility, and in that case although I have tight hammies I still get low. There are times when my sciatica flares up or the quads tighten up (early in a season when I haven’t worked those muscles for months like I should have - more on that in another video). In cases like that I can modify my delivery using the same techniques I teach here, achieve the same results without the knee coming anywhere near the ground, and, importantly still deliver a smooth bowl, on line, and with intended pace. And yes, there will be a specific video forthcoming on that too!

    Hi Max. Just as I believe there are only two shots in the game - the draw - and - the drive, I also am one to suggest there be two different deliveries - one for each shot. So while this series has been all about the draw, a follow up series will also be specifically about the drive. I have two distinctly different methods of deliver myself, one for draw and one for drive and have taught the drive method to bowlers with equally success. Both sequences enable a bowler to keep their shoulders square to the target. When they get out of alignment is when all hell breaks loose - especially when driving. Some will argue they use the same delivery method for all shots, but when you look at the deliveries of some of the greatest bowlers of all time you will see they have different deliveries for the two different shots. David Bryant, for instance, started his draw from a crouch, however, by the time he delivered the bowl he was definitely more upright. His delivery motion was not from the crouch as some assumed, and tried unsuccessfully to emulate. On the other hand his drive always came from an upright stance. We had several discussions back in ‘84 and ‘86 at the Gateway Masters about this. He was the consummate student of the game - as I believe we all should be.

    i'll tell you if you can bare with me. Let's first define what we are talking about with a drive. I'm not talking about a swinger or a runner or some sort of firm shot, I'm talking almost dead straight missile. I have a decently quick and accurate drive so that I how I define it anyway. A large backswing is actually important for a quick drive, you want to be able to pull your arm as far back as you possibly can, behind parallel to the ground. My backswing reaches somewhere between horizontal and completely vertical. Think Ryan Bester. Most people you come across simply don't have this mobility at lower levels of the game, and when you try to teach them they lack the confidence to rip their arm up that high. The other main factor is forward launch from your rear leg as you drive, a forward explosion of the whole body. If you want to learn what muscle groups to train to develop power in your drive, the primary force generation is your front delts (shoulders) and pecs as they abduct the arm. Secondly, your lats contribute to the wind up. Your entire upper body and shoulder complex contribute to the stability. Once you have the components and technique, the way to attain the most accuracy and consistency is to dial back to around 85% max effort in your drive. You won't lose much pace but you will stay within your body's ability to maintain stability - otherwise you're likely to spoon them everywhere, and that happens to the best of us when we go too quick. Timing is most important once you have the technique.

    @@Tasmanaut Thank you for the in depth explanation. I’m still not confident enough to drive. However, my partner has just won a mixed pairs tournament at our local club in NZ. He has a fixed stance so I feel this guidance will be super helpful to him. Can I ask, does this apply to both fast greens in the Southern Hemisphere as well as our heavier greens back home in the UK?

  • @Tasmanaut

    @Tasmanaut

    Жыл бұрын

    @@angelh8262 It applies to fast and slow greens, though you will struggle to drive dead straight on a slow green. Our greens range from 8-22 seconds in tasmania so we have almost every condition. When I was experimenting trying to develop the shot, I was laughed at and criticised because I was a new player and it was frowned upon for me to practice such things. The first few hundred deliveries you attempt will be awful, there will be no stability or accuracy, bowls will dump into the ground or you'll let go too late and they will come out 3 foot in the air. I suggest you or your friend practice with minimal people around and have minimal expectations. Beers may help, on an afternoon when no one is at the club. Some would say the first priority is accuracy, but I almost think the first priority is developing the confidence to really launch it, then dialling back the power until smoothness and accuracy comes. Don't be afraid to have a go, it's going to be awful and you'll feel stupid for a long time, but just start doing it over and over until you get it.

    😂 good question, David! I’d like to claim it’s just a bit of magic 🪄 - but it’s not. In fact it’s something I built into my demo and indoor training area a number of years ago. It allows me to practice any type of shot, from draw to drive without fear of damaging anything, or anyone else in the room. I plan on a short video to showcase this setup in the near future. Becoming a better bowler is about process not outcome. Outcome is a result of improving the process and this small space setup will let you concentrate on your process 💯 % Hopefully I can get this video, and a few others, produced very soon!

  • @TheDeliveryDoctor

    @TheDeliveryDoctor

    9 ай бұрын

    Hi Richard… and 😉 no worries about age cuz I have never really considered it an issue. I’ve competed in numerous sports and have injured knees from running and ice hockey, separated ribs in golf, strained an Achilles in a track race (most pain ever), suffer from sciatica, endure wrist tendinitis - to mention just a few. This is also coming up to my 56th years in Bowls. I have had to adapt from a traditional golf swing to the Stack & Tilt and more recently to a One Plane Swing (a la Moe Norman). Each change has allowed me to continue golfing, and I am eager to help people continue bowling by also adapting their deliveries to ever changing circumstances. I switched from a “nose to the ice” tuck curler to a “stick” curler, using an adaptive delivery aid when my sciatic was bothering me and could no longer deliver from the hack. About 8 years ago I developed our Ubi_Launcher, a very popular bowls delivery aid, and while I haven’t used it yet I can see the day when my old injuries will catch up to me and I’ll be “sticking it” in Bowls too. Having said all that, it’s true that when we are away from the game for so long getting back into the groove can be painful. Usually it’s the quads that tighten up - making it hard to ‘get down’ with our deliveries. No matter our age, keeping some semblance of fitness in our core will help, not only for bowls, but in general as well. It doesn’t have to be rigorous exercise - some easy squats (use a chair for balance), some skating movements (again using a chair for balance), some simple upper body flexibility stretches (most are now recommending dynamic stretching before static - meaning we don’t hold a stretch the way we were taught to years ago). All should be done in moderation at first, and always with you being the judge as to the level at which you can stretch. It’s not about hurting ourselves. Once we have our bodies tuned up I can then start to work on adaptations to the delivery I show in these videos. I understand that not everyone gets as low as I do (nor do I some days) but I have developed a “tweak” that will allow a bowler to deliver a smooth, controlled bowl that is released very close to the ground - regardless of their knee or hip problems. I will try and get a video posted with this adaptation as it would be easier to follow than a lengthy description of it here (as you can probably tell I tend to get wordy on occasion 😂) Deliveries can also be affected by the surface we play on. I have played in Canada (home), England, Scotland, USA, Hong Kong, and Australia and have experienced outdoor playing conditions from 17 seconds to speeds not much faster than my back yard! Where are you located? Do you know the pace of your greens? Be glad to help if I can.

    @@wayneparkes72 gotcha. A little background first - We developed our Ubi_Launcher just over 8 years ago to assist bowlers with continuing with this great game of ours. Bowlers have either continued, come back or even started Bowls using our delivery aid. For a few years before that we had brought in a few different ‘bowling arms’ but found that due their varying lengths, their weight, their cost, their need for grip strength and most importantly their need for shoulder rotation they were not for everyone. We have also witnessed improper technique and, in horror, as a past greenskeeper, seen bowls land for the first time 10’ in front of the bowler - yes, divots flew, That’s not to say the ‘arm’ cannot not work for some bowlers, but grip strength and previous shoulder injuries are the issue that prodded us to develop the Ubi_Launcher (video series can be found here in my channel). If one has suffered from rotator cuff injuries I’d strongly suggest staying away from anything, like the ‘arm’, that requires shoulder rotation. Having said all that, and while I’m not exactly certain what you are looking for with respect to instruction, I’ll try and give a few tips. From past experience with the ‘arms’ we did have, I’d suggest starting with short deliveries and perfect those until you can determine where your release point will be. This would be where you are delivering the bowl with no bounce. Video (iPhone or otherwise) can really help bowlers see themselves in real time! Then gradually increase the distance you are rolling your bowl, each time ‘feeling’ the release of the bowl. Yes, fell is still a part of a successful delivery, no matter what technique or device is used to get the bowl rolling. (After having written that I’d really suggest, as I do with the standard delivery, of practicing without a bowl. You can do that too, in front of a mirror, ** without a bowl of course 😬 **) The delivery sequence with the arm, unlike with my standard delivery, will require a pendular movement. I can’t see any other way the bowl could be set in motion. Are you able to step forward? If not you may try different initial stances ie. with your lead foot (in this case your non bowling arm foot) forward in your stance. This would be akin to widening your stance in golf, and in this case would perhaps provide a wider base for stability. As with all coaching tips, without seeing our athletes it is difficult to provide specific corrections. Do you have a good club coach who you can work with - one who understands the delivery, whether it be from a stance or with a delivery aid? In Canada, curling has been literally saved with the introduction of the ‘stick’ decades ago. Our own curling club of over 300 members has over 80 ‘stick curlers’, many of whom would not be able to curl without this invaluable delivery aid. It’s why we developed our own ‘stick’, the Ubi_Launcher, for bowlers and with over 2000 in use worldwide we are so incredibly thrilled when we hear stories from bowlers who have been enabled by their use of our aid! I know this wasn’t exactly what you were looking for, but again, seek out a local coach who understands movement as they will be the best ones to assist you. Final thoughts. There are several components of the delivery sequence I teach that can still be applied to your use of the ‘arm’. Specifically: The pre-stance - you still need to line the bowl up with your PoA (Point of Aim) The stance - relaxed stance wins the day Forward Motion - will depend on your mobility - if you can take a step forward then do so as this will help when you are playing longer ends - ** but ** your Release point is key so always try and release smoothly The follow through - again, not an option - you own arm, and by association the ‘bowling arm’, should be aligned with your PoA when you complete your delivery.

    No doubt about it. I golf, and follow golfers a lot. Nobody can deny that Jim Furyk or Bubba Watson and others have rather different swings. They all admit, however, that their own swings are not something they would, or could, use as a teaching method. Moe Norman had one of the oddest looking swings of any golfer. Some scoffed at him as a result, however, he was also recognized by his peers as being one of the greatest ball strikers of all time. I have played off a 5 hdcp, not bad for a guy who started late, have played through various rib, wrist and elbow injuries - and last summer I tried Moe’s swing. It made so much sense, as, like I emphasize with my own bowls delivery method, it takes many extraneous moving parts out of the equation. Hate using the over used acronym KISS but it’s true. The simpler we can keep something the less we have to think about it. After viewing numerous Moe Norman videos, and my own background of analysis, last summer I was soon playing pain free golf off a 5 hdcp again. If you’re interested in Moe’s delivery and want to compare the simplicities of his golf swing to my bowls delivery check out Todd Graves Golf here on KZread.
