Bowing In - Karate for Beginners

At the start of each class we do a procedure called "Bowing in". It includes going into a kneeling position called "Seiza", then closing our eyes for around 20 seconds to clear our mind. After that there is a formal bow to show deep respect to each other.
At the end of the class the class, we repeat the same procedure (we call it "Bowing out"). This allows the knowledge attained to be become more settled within us.
It's important to note that bowing from seiza can conflict with certain religions, so Muslim students allowed to just sit still and then do a standing bow afterwards.

4:03 In Karate, no-one is privileged. If they don't want to bow and follow the rules and etiquette, maybe they shouldn't practice Karate at all. Religious arrogance has no place in Japanese culture.

@@oilshookup4507 Why should I be tolerant for a culture that is intolerant? This is how we ban extremists out of our Karate School. Wholeness in a Karate school can only be accomplished if everybody is treated equally. Nobody is above the rules and has to follow the same discipline. If you don't understand this, you don't understand the essence of Karate-Do and you are an insult to the memory of the founder of Karate. Maybe you should start reading some books written by Gichin Funakoshi to instruct yourself and to better understand the way of Karate. Karate is there to purify the mind and body and to free oneself from primitive religious doctrines.

@@Sams.Videos I've read Funakoshi's books and I highly doubt he would care at all if Muslim students didn't want to bow the same way, he is more then intelligent enough to know other cultures have different customs.

@@aaronm134 Japan is known for keeping it's culture pure. They don't like foreigners or immigrants that much. It has been that way for centuries. So no, Muslims would have had to adapt to the Japanese culture during Funakoshi's era or move along. It is very insulting to the Japanese when a foreigner doesn't practice the correct etiquette when practicing a Japanese art or craft. This goes the other way around to, it is very insulting to Muslims when somebody who wants to become a Muslim doesn't practice the religion correctly. You don't go making an exception eating pork when you freshly convert to Islam, just like you don't go making an exception not bowing to the dojo, the sensei and one another when you practice karate.
