Bowiea volubilis (Blooming Onion) Houseplant Care-92 of 365

I filmed this at the end of winter when my Bowiea had a full head of "hair"...I always find in the heat of the summer, the lush climbing leaves (hence the name "blooming onion") tend to brown up and die back-only to put out more green in late summer/early fall. Not sure if this is other people's experience in the Northeast but it is with mine here! This is #92 in 365 Days of Plants.
In this video I go over some basic care tips including where this plant grows natively, where I'm growing it in my home, propagation, watering, lighting and more.

I’ve been looking for proper care on this plant for years. It’s a previous rare gift from my girlfriend in NC. It grows wild in her yard and I never knew how rare it was till I told her. Thank you Summer 💚

wonderful plant, wonderful video. Let me share some of my experience with this plant, It seems like when they are in the growing stage, which turns out (for me) to be in the winter, they like water a lot. On my east-south facing window where they receive direct sunlight for at least a couple of hour, they seem to grow quite well and like lots of water... actually I water them more than once a week (but very little at a time) in a kind of clay-loam soil + undecomposed organic matter + sandtype of soil in a smaller terracotta pot and they seem to love it. also, I left two unwatered for about 10 days and the other watered, and the ones that I didn't water turned out to have a bit soft bulbs, where as the watered one had the bulb firm.

It’s crazy! I feel like every time I see a plant in a nursery and am interested but don’t know anything about it, that same day you seem to release a video on it! It’s now happened two day in a row but the past two days have not been the first time! Thank you!

Heyo. This is my favorite plant I own. So unique. My advice it to not accidentally cut or break the vine. Otherwise it wont continue to grow that rotation. It will have to go through its dormancy phase again before it shoots out another vine. You can also peel away the dead layers to expose its pretty, green base.

Love those plants, I grow the two different types, Bowiea Volubilis which is the summer growing variety and Bowiea Garienpensis which is the winter growing plant. It has a larger bulb, chunkier growing vine and larger flowers. I harvest the seeds and grow up new plants from them however it takes several years to obtain sizeable bulbs. Great plants and I have lots of them around my garden and in among the pot plants.

I think often of a tour you did with the bulb plant with the tiny holes and interior design set up for ants to live in. I think that's the coolest thing ever :) I know this plant doesn't work that way but whenever I see a plant with the bulb-like base it reminds me of it.

I bought a two-pack of these on Amazon maybe two years ago now, they're so cool! They arrived the size of a small marble and now they're both about billiard ball size. I'm also hesitant to call this a climbing plant; mine kind of just creep/tangle onto nearby plants but the tendrils don't seem to want to grab onto anything. I'm thinking about making a sort of wire bowl that can sit above the bulb to hold the pile. Mine have also both formed cracks on their outer layers as if they're trying to molt.

Just got mine online but the bulb is a bit soft and wrinkly two days after potting. Never watered it since potting though and I used mixture of pumice mostly, perlite, vermiculite and rough sands plus a bit of organic compos. Is it adapting process only or is it in trouble? It came with full lush vines and till now hasn’t dried yet. Pls advise

someone stole your plant?! that's terrible. my heart goes out to you. you know, what comes around goes around, and here espescially I say that you reap what you sow!- in that that is a saying refering to planting/plants! so whoever took your plant is going to pay for it in one way or another. I hope you have found a good plant to replace your stolen one.
