I'm a hunter from Colorado, US. I hunt with everything, rifles, bows, muzzleloaders, etc... I've bow hunted since i was a very young kid, and have been doing it now for about 40 years. I love archery and i love archery hunting, but i would caution you that on an island with lot's of people and potentially not enough game to go around, maybe keep it on private reserves only. It can be a mess around large urban areas with lots of archery hunters. Colorado is just now learning this and beginning to limit it's archery tags more and with good success so far. Beyond that, i hope you guys get it going, archery equipment is of course safe and humane. It might take 25 seconds instead of 12 seconds for an animal to pass out and on, but that is a moot point if you ask me. They're full of adrenaline either way. I've never found any difference between using a 2 blade or a 3 blade except the 2 blade will get better more consistent penetration. I use broadheads that are 1-1/8 inch to 1- 1/4 inch either way, my arrows are 555 grains with weight forward inserts, and shooting 55 lb compound. In the past i used a 65 lb recurve with 600-650 grain arrows, 135 gr broadheads and you get the same performance except the range is shorter. You definitely get a better trail with the 3 blade, but they both do the job in about the same time.

Unfortunately the education level around bow hunting in the UK is extremely low, a major barrier to legalisation. Would love nothing more than to legally be able to bow hunt in the UK.

Bow hunting is a great way of hunting. It’s more challenging and as every other form of hunting, training and ethics should be considered. I don’t agree to register the bows as firearms. This will cause problem to the archery in total. A bow hunting certification/ examination is more viable.

I'm a bowhunter from the U.S. I have heard many arguments for and against bowhunting in the UK. What I wonder about is the use of catapults for small game and birds. If this is legal, why would anyone appose the use of archery equipment for small game?

Those saying it's not efficient enough and a rifle kills with kinetic energy need to better understand how a rifle kills. The visual aspects differ from rifle to bow however, they both kill by blood loss and lack of oxygen to the brain resulting in death. The rifle may look like it knocks the deer over stone dead but it actually doesn't, the deer is knocked over by the energy transfer but it dies from bloodloss. The only exception is a rifle shot which destroys the brain that is the only shot placement causing an instant death. The Bow and the rifle are directly comparible when measuring bloodloss. As with both the person behind the weapon is most likely the weakest link.

Am i right in thinking that in the usa a large proportion of bow hunting is done from tree stands and the realistic range of a bow is upto 30 yards 🤔

  • @countrymansdiary

Yes. Hunters set up a blind or stand near game trails or feeding areas so as deer pass through or gather to eat, they know the range.

It's absurd that it was banned to begin with. Archery is such a base human activity that every isolated tribe on Earth has used it. Like the use of fire it's one of our species' earliest identifiers. There's no other descriptor for banning bowhunting than anti-human.

Despite being in favour of deer control and animal management in general I can't seem to warm to this method. I've seen bowhunting in action over in the states and parts of Africa and I personally think its not efficient enough and subject to too many variables. I think the proportion of lost deer wounded and run would rise significantly and cause undue suffering in general, an arrow will kill by bleeding whereas a bullet will kill by kinetic shock. Let's stick to firearms and legislate bows and crossbows in the same category as firearms. That's my twopennorth anyway... keep em coming PJ!

I appreciate your oppinion. I'm an American hunter that uses all types of weapons to hunt (archery/rifle hunting for about 40 years or so) and i disagree with it being inhumane. Archery equipment works as well as firearms. There isn't a hairs worth of difference except that it takes a cooler head, and more discernment. Either way, the game pumps up with adrenaline and then runs until it blacks out from oxygen depletion. I've seen animals go down in their tracks from archery and rifle shots and I've seen them make it an 1/8th of a mile or so with both and thats with clean center chest shots. I wonder if you would be more open to it if they restricted it to people that had a certain number of years of rifle hunting behind them, and that can pass rigorous accuracy tests and pass a detailed test on the equipment and how it is tuned and so on, as well as shot placement and game anatomy, etc? In the hands of an experience hunter and archer, it is a very humane way to take game, in the hands of a jumpy kid or new hunter that has 'buck fever' or whatever, maybe not so much...i can certainly attest to the extra carnage you mentioned and a lot of inexperienced archery hunters can leave behind a lot of unclaimed game... I've seen it 1st hand and in colorado where i live, it is just now getting reined back in by regulation. But a few bad apples doesn't mean that it is not viable for people that are serious about it. There are benefits to it under certain circumstances that one should weigh. It is quiet, and much safer in areas with higher population densities that need deer culling.

I really don't need of want my bows categorised as firearms, archery is a hobby I enjoy. Being made to deal with paperwork licences or having hobbies criminalised is solving a problem that does not exist. Deer are very overpopulated/under managed, but I see it very very unlikely that in the current political world you will ever get bow hunting legalized with the UK.

Why would you legislate bows as firearms - you’d kill archery as a sport altogether. Every tournament, clout, kids bows. What a daft idea. I have hunted plenty of animals with a bow we all killed and most recovered save a few wild pigs in dense brush. The deer in the UK will end up dying of malnourishment, road injuries or disease. Bow hunting with good training and ethics is an efficient way to control numbers, especially in pre-urban areas where firearms would be too dangerous. What a great way to restore forests, provide food and a 50,000 year old tradition….

@@simoncooper6939 we've all seen videos from the US of wounded animals from competent archers (Fresh Tracks etc) due to miscalculation of range by just a couple of yards. There's a much higher chance of a wounded animal with a bow and anyone who says otherwise is simply trying to justify something they know not to be true.

  • @SteveLofthouse_

The margin of error in bow hunting is far higher than using a rifle, and that gives a greater chance of injuring the deer instead of a clean kill. I would suggest that only the top 25% of bow hunters are professional enough and experienced enough to ensure not only that a good shot is taken, but more importantly, that an 'iffy' shot is declined. Put the two things together and you get a recipe for disaster by the "dead is dead" brigade. In the hands of a highly trained hunter with good self discipline there is an arguement for bow hunting... it's the majority of others I worry about.
