Bow Bells from the belfry The bells that define you as a Cockney . Read description

Some Maximus ringing taken during ASCY practise night in Sept 2000.
My father Ernie Rowe and Bill Theobald installed these bell in 1961, A truly wonderful Whitechapel Peal, and in my opinion the best sounding 12 in London.
My Dad was also born with in the sound of Bow Bells too so he was a true Cockney.

Beautiful bells.. without doubt my favourite peal after Westminster Abbey. Some nice Orion Maximus until about halfway though when the tenor and middle bells lost their way. They tidied it up though. Such nice music from the tenors

I love Bow they sound wonderful.. My dad hung the bells at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney, they are a copy of Canterbury so have the flat 6b and exta treble and they sound wonderful. The light q0 are really charming to ring.

Just reading through all the comments of my video it seems many people love York and maybe thing St Pauls are bad. I love them all, York simply because it has a depth and warmth like a fine bottle of full bodied shiraz. St Paul to me are the sound of HOME, I know they are not modern bells but they are Classic. I love Bow, I believe it is Whitechapel at its best and I do have a heart for whitechapel. My old man Ernie always said Whitechapel for Trebles and Taylors for Tenors. Good call I think

DGJ P Many people think anyone born in London is a cockney which is of course not true. Bow bells were destroyed during ww2 the new bells were cast in 1956 and were installed in Dec 1961. Technically this means that for around 20 years there were no cockneys born Ok just a trivia

My dad also, hung At Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. These are a carbon copy of Canterbury including the sharp treble and flat 6 to give a really lovely light 10 I do like the back 10 though

Thanks for your comment, you are correct about the audio.it was taken with a Sony camera using 8mm tape, I think the distortion is either the audio overloading the mic or the xoumd wave vibration affecting the tape running through the recording heads.

@carbonrocket Right then, This here is Bellringing done in the English style. There are about 5000 rings of bells in England, but few elsewhere. Because the bells swing full circle it is hard to play tunes on them, so we ring mathematical patterns instead. The bells start by playing descending musical scales, which is the first sequence, and then swap over adjacent pairs of bells in the sequence. These patterns are called methods. Sadly, space here is far too limited for a full description.

OK, judging by listening to the treble to see what it was doing, and by where the tenor was at each lead end, I think it's 3 leads of Orion and then 1 lead of Bristol. The ringing gets a tiny bit scrappy in the middle, but then Orion is a very hard method.
