A genuinely talented blues man with a voice I could listen to all day long.

Apart from being a great singer and guitarist this guy pays attention to how we the public hear the music. How often do buskers either sound too shrill or too muffled. His guy knows his frequencies and how to control them. Great job.

I grew up with this song and love this interpretation. The company store was a real thing in America, on cotton plantations or other work farms.

Coal mine companies across Appalachia as well. Then cotton mills did one better. In addition to the company store, they bought up large acres of land and built houses to rent to the employees. Quite often these would be two family duplexes with very reasonable rental rates, that were taken from your check each pay period. But if you lost your job, your family would be immediately evicted and any rent due or money owed to the company store would be taken from your last check.

In many mines and other isolated worksites there was a general store. You bought everything there. Food, cigarettes and booze. You could have a tab, and at the end of the month you hand in your check. The store was owned by the company.

Sorry, I need to correct you a little here. The company store was literally a store owned and run by the mining company. The mines were pretty remote and the miners often stayed in camps by the mine and had to buy all their food, clothes, etc, at the company store for what were usually high prices. So the effect was that, yeah the mining company paid you, but you ended up spending all your money at the company store, often going into debt.
