Botswana: Trouble in the Elephant Sanctuary [FULL Documentary] - BBC News

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Botswana has a reputation for being one of Africa’s last great sanctuaries for elephants, while ivory poachers have been on a killing spree across the continent.
But now there’s evidence of “a significant elephant-poaching problem” in Botswana, according to the scientist who carried out an aerial wildlife survey.
It’s sparked a bitter political row between the president and his predecessor, ignited a national debate over whether there are too many elephants, and questioned if hunting should be re-introduced. The BBC’s Africa Correspondent Alastair Leithead investigates

Global Conservationist huh? Is that what you call yourselves now? Neo Colonist dosent have that warm fuzzy vibe? So I'm curious why the main people spewing this propaganda is by white people with British or American Accents who obviously are not from these countries? Why is it we never hear from local people regarding these so called problems? What business do you foreigners have in bad mouthing and demonizing these developing countries and their main agriculture industries which drive their economies? If I didn't know better I would think you racist people value the lives of field beasts over that of these black and brown children? Sure looks that way. Since traditional colonialism is is out, is this the new propaganda of Neo Colonist, using BS wildlife causes as a way to control these developing countries? Could their economic empowerment mean the end of your so called superiority in their countries? Just curious. I can see how you all can control the narrative and use Wildlife " crisis" to do so. I ask everyone watching these videos to critically think about the bigger picture. Maybe these folks need to be deported back to England and the US, and let these folks do what they want with their resources? Remember the terrorizing ways the WWF would treat indigenous people? Murder, violence, and torture all in the name of saving animals??? Think about it people, open your eyes!!!

Mike is focusing on elephant, ( which is good) but it is not only elephant. It concerns rhino, lions, cheetah, leopards, pangolin, and many more animal species being poached for human "needs". Next to that insects and other animals die out because of the use of pesticides, marine life dies out because of (plastics) pollution and other animals become extinct because of global warming. The cause in all cases are humans. There are just too many of us.

Having spent time working and talking to the relevant authorities and people on the ground (including community leaders) in the past 4 weeks I will say this is a very mis-informed film. I know the BBC for producing very well researched documentaries but sadly this falls very short. The government has never denied that there is a poaching problem, the issue here is that Dr. Chase picked a side in a political situation and sadly the elephants are collateral damage.

Yeah I don't understand. I think the scientist was really clear. His assessments were discounted because of the political considerations of the news of poaching impacting tourism to the overall business of safari tourism in Botswana. Clearly some people don't want to know that the animals are being actively poached if they are projecting an image as a safe haven for such animals.

The crux of the matter is that there are too many elephants and the ecosystem has literally been visibly deforested in a few parts. But first a few points. Botswana does more to protect animals than any other nation in the world. Here is how. The biggest military division in the country has the sole task of protecting wildlife. It comprises of air force, special forces and ground force as well as a river force whose existence is just for the protection of animals. The intelligence community is actively involved in the anti-poaching. Financial intelligence tracks income that might be related to money earned from poaching. Directorate of Intelligence fields Israelli and American equipment for a more military intelligence for anti-poaching. Police are also involved. Botswana is the 44th largest country in the world landmass, yet has the world's second largest game reserve. That is madness at about 10% of total size of the country. There are many other parks and game reserves beside it. Botswana has the world's largest population of elephants. This is not a random occurrence at all. The total number of elephants equals over a third the population of the capital city Gaborone. Last but not least, the military and every single journalist and news site that has actually visited the area, has reported DR Chase's claim as simply sensational and misinformed. Not only that, but HIS OWN DATA, shows that less elephants have been poached than in the previous years. The proposed hunting will be in the presence of officials to make sure nothing funny happens. It is a better solution than simple mass culling and can be suspended if elephant populations go down.

You’re right, thanks to past government administrations and international aid, Botswana is leading the way for wildlife conservation. Now that there’s a new administration, it would be unwise to relax regulations and risk losing all progress made in the last 20 years. Thanks to all the people of Botswana for leading the way & hopefully Botswana can maintain past successes.

At the 20:06 mark, they talk about how hunting might damage the image of Brand Botswana and have a negative impact on jobs and government revenues etc, as a tourism scholar in the country its funny how they talk about revenue even though most of it does not circulate in the country. Almost all tourism enterprises in the north are owned by foreigners who hire Batswana on low paying posts, all those revenues are then leaked to their home countries, we as Batswana hardly benefit from the tourism and the issue of hunting would help a lot, we are not saying all the elephants should be killed all we are saying is that if hunting is re introduced we would benefit more and we would reduce the human wildlife conflict... This documentary is very misleading and I am disappointed by BBC

The government of Botswana should actively consider legalising hunting at that level which would not harm the elephant wildlife drastically. As far as illegal poaching is concerned, that would reduce once hunting is allowed. It would help local people in earning their livelihood and they would also come out in support of preventing illegal poaching. Otherwise, the problem would remain same and only degrade with each passing day.

This has been Botswana attitude about elephant poaching. Blame it on the Chinese illicit buying of ivory. There in the major cities and have the tacit understanding of the government. They let them buy on the illegal market and ship back to China

That's a problem alone! The elephants enemy is in the sky. Aerial flights collecting whereabouts of elephants are shared not only for preservation sake but greed. My belief is the location of Africa's elephants are for sale.

Those who call upon Jehovah will succeed. The earth belongs to Jehovah. Revelations 11 Jehovah promises he will ruin those ruining the earth. Revelations 12 says down the great dragon was hurled the original serpent and devil he was hurled to the earth having great anger knowing he has a short period of time. Mankind must call upon our heavenly Father Jehovah for help truth justice and peace come from Jehovah. He will listen and help all who ask for his loving kindness. Satan wants to destroy the earth and mankind. Jesus said oppose the devil and he will flee from you. Revelations foretells God will command Jesus to remove evil and wickedness from earth and God will pour out blessings upon all mankind. Jesus said everyone who calls on my Father will be saved. Ask you will recieve.
