I agree, this song truly is a 10 (and it's been a 10 for me since I was 7 years old when it first came out on the radio in 1976). This is the song by which I judge all others. I'm not a musician, but I've had a sincere appreciation of good music since I was a young child, and I cannot think of another song I've heard in the last 50 years that is better than this one. How this band is not in the Rock n Roll Music Hall of Fame I do not know (or understand). They are/were master of musicianship.

Album was recorded in the home studio of Tom Scholz: He came into the recording industry in an unusual way; as an MIT-trained engineer interested in music, he had designed his own recording studio in an apartment building basement to record his own music. The first Boston album was mostly recorded in this basement studio, often using devices he designed and invented himself. After the initial success of the band, he founded Scholz Research & Development, Inc. to develop and market his own inventions, many under the Rockman brand.

Interesting facts are that Tom Scholz played all the instruments except for the drum. And a friend, Brad Delp sang all the vocal tracks. All instruments were recorded 2 or 3 times, and mixed together. A colossal work done over a 5 years period.

@@alainrobillard4300 Sadly, sometime between 11:00 pm on March 8 and 1:20 pm on March 9, 2007, Delp died by suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning at his home on Academy Avenue, in Atkinson, New Hampshire. He left various notes scattered from his car to the interior of his home. The Atkinson police discovered his body on the floor of his master bathroom after Pamela Sullivan saw a dryer vent tube connected to the exhaust pipe of Delp's car. Two charcoal grills were found to have been placed in the bathtub and lit, causing the room to fill with smoke. A suicide note was paper-clipped to the neck of his T-shirt, which read the same as a character's note from Twin Peaks: "Mr. Brad Delp. I am a lonely soul." Delp left four sealed envelopes in his office addressed to his children, his former wife Micki, his fiancée, and a couple who were not named by the media. He was 55 years old. The following day, Boston's website was temporarily closed down, the webmaster having replaced their home page with a simple black background and white text message: "We've just lost the nicest guy in rock and roll."

I'm not sure Brad Delph was feeling "good" as he was thinking about [his] Marianne walking away from him...as I sort of interpreted the meaning of the sound to be that he was rather somewhat wistfully thinking about the way he felt about her...but it is a great song, none the less.

Brad Delp (RIP) not only sang the lead vocals, he also backed himself up with all of the backing vocals as well - there wasn't a second singer (at least on the first album.) Tom Scholz did all of the instruments himself, except for the drums. He got Brad to do vocals. Then when the album became a hit and they needed to tour, Tom had to hire other musicians to play the other instruments :)

Great reaction! If you get a chance, read deeper in Wikipedia on how this album was created. Tom Scholz played and mixed the instruments in his basement and Brad Delp did ALL of the vocals and harmonies. It is really a masterpiece. They had to create a band to actually play it live and tour. The other amazing thing is the technology at the time in 1976 was analog. We take it for granted today on our iphones we can mix a multitrack song. Tom did it with analog tape and a razor to cut.

Ugh, I am very rarely ever envious of others. However, one of my few regrets in life is that I didn't see Boston live in the mid to late 80s when I was finally old enough to see them. The band had basically become a one-man show by 1989-1990. I had one chance to see them in June 1987, but I lived in Texas at the time and they were playing in Dallas at the Cottonbowl (outdoor football stadium...in June...in 100 degree heat) and I decided I didn't want to buy tickets for an outdoor concert in Texas in June. They had not toured since 1979, when I was 10 years old, and I thought for sure there would be another chance. Then I moved to Manhattan in 1990, and there was no other chance to see the original members again. I'm happy for you that you didn't miss out. I bet they were Ah-mazing back then

Pretty darn good for one guy playing almost all the instruments. Best concert I've ever been to -- and I've been to everyone --- even McCartney.

The story of Boston is a rare tale. Tom Scholz was an electronic engineer by day and a musician by night who built a home studio in his basement in the early 70s. Not state-of-the-art even then, Tom masterfully recorded all of the instruments (guitars, bass, Hammond organ) except for drums (Jim Masdea ("Rock And Roll Band"), Sib Hashian) and the guitar solos on "Long Time" all in his basement. He mixed the entire Boston debut album (except one song) in his basement in 1975. Tom's friend Brad Delp did all the vocals, something like eight tracks between doubling himself and added harmonies. The eponymous album was the biggest-selling debut album of all-time until Guns 'N' Roses' "Appetite For Destruction" (1987j Check out all of their works from the first album (1978), "Don't Look Back" (1978), "Third Stage" (1984) and "Walk On" (1994)

Glad you love this song! I had the same reaction when I first heard this song in the summer of 1976. If you could also react to Foreplay/Long Time on this same album, that be great.

I don’t know if if was something in the air or water but when this came out so did Kansas debut and suddenly anthemic songs were popular and both bands came out of nowhere practically with this sweeping and powerful music. I remember how astounding it was at the time! Incredible music!

Every song on the debut album still in heavy rotation on classic rock radio, deservedly so. I would also recommend "Don't Look Back", "Amanda" and "Hollyanne" from later albums.
