    I saw Brad with Beatlejuice in NYC with my fiancé . He was playing Paul, and he knocked it out of the park!. I prefer his spectacular voice to Mercury's AND Steve Perry's. Brad's death was tragic for humanity; that great performer and his iconic voice silenced forever.

    The reality that the band or any of the members are not in the Rock n Roll HOF is criminal. Where does Brad hit in the top vocalists? If you ask the common person, he’s in the top 5. If you ask the industry, for some reason people forget he even existed. Not only was he a brilliant vocalist, he was a beautiful human. I still miss him.

    Tom Scholz, a MIT trained engineer, wrote, played all the instruments and recorded this whole album (not vocals) in his Boston basement apartment. The unique sound came from devices Scholz invented. Brad Delp never gets enough respect as a singer.

    @styxxxs1

    Exactly. Sholz had to form the band with local musicians when he got the record deal to prove that there was a band for the label to promote. No synthesizers were used, it was all guitar and Sholz inventions. Obviously, organ and other instruments were not guitar.

  • @gwydion56
    @gwydion563 ай бұрын

    Tom Scholz was a musical and engineering genius to wrote, played the instruments, and produced the album almost entirely on his own. But his true genius was getting Brad Delp as his vocalist. Delp had a voice range and variety that was only rivaled by the likes of Freddy Mercury. The results were epic. Foreplay/Longtime is a must-listen pair of songs. The Foreplay part is all about the instruments, But the Longtime section is another tour de force by Brad Delp. There is nothing bad in Boston's very unique catalog of hits.

They're going to be more independent because the methods of recording, without being manufactured by a label, is much more expensive. Ok, so as a producer, you need to know this whole album. Tom Scholz is the guitarist, but he produced this entire album out of his basement. Many of the effects for the guitars, bass, and vocals he created and electrically engineered himself. Then that's Brad Delp. Brad's voice is transcendent. It was a sad day when we lost him. More Boston.

    Brad Delp was the voice of Boston. He passed away in 2007. Tom Scholz essentially created the band while finishing his masters at MIT. He invented the guitar pedals that let him play effects and make the "Boston sound". Most of the first album was recorded in his basement on equipment he invented. I knew he was an inventor, but Wiki filled in the gaps for me about the extent of his creations. "Don't Look Back" is my personal favorite Boston song, but I grew up with them, and love tons of their music. I don't think it's too much to compare Delp and Mercury. They were amazing artists, and we're all better off for their music.

    Pegasus, the drummer with the amazing afro is Sib Hashian, who sadly passed away in 2017. A bit of trivia for you is that his daughter, Lauren Hashian, is married to "The Rock" himself, Dwayne Johnson. Unfortunately this version of the song is promotional single edit, which cuts out one of the verses. I will add my vote to the many many other commenters who have said you should listen to the entire album and react to some of the full-length album versions of the songs on there. This is an incredible debut album, and this is one of the most "perfect" rock songs of all time (in my opinion).

    Tom Sholz wrote the songs, played all the instruments, recorded and produced the album in his basement! There's more complexity to the story, including making the record company think they were doing it their way, but they were really doing it Tom's way. Check out the story on Wikipedia.

    @mrhyde119 stop what? Steve Morse (Kansas) & Bradley Delp are certainly in that same wheelhouse of amazing singers of clean vocals with outSTANDING high ranges. If you're saying that Kansas isn't in Boston's class, at least in terms of vocals. I'm a fan of progressive rock, so I take Kansas' musicianship over Boston's all day. Miracles Out of Nowhere or The Wall or Cherokee Anthem are great prog rock tunes, while Dust in the Wind of Carry On scratch the classic rock itch (even though Carry On is ALSO a prog rock classic).

    This album takes me back to my childhood when my brother and I would go on road trips with my dad in his '68 Mustang fastback. The Boston debut album would ALWAYS be in rotation in it's ENTIRETY on those trips. These songs just completely encapsulate (for me) a time and place where it was just us, the road, the growl of that V8, and this band cranked to 11. Just an overwhelming feeling of freedom and contentment as the three of us blasted down the highway. I will NEVER not smile and sing along to these songs when they come on.

    From Wiki: The lead guitarist, Scholz is an MIT-trained engineer who designed and built his own recording studio in an apartment basement in the early 1970s. A fan of rock music throughout his teen years, Scholz began writing songs while earning his master's degree at MIT. The first Boston album was mostly recorded in his basement studio, primarily using devices _he invented_. After the success of Boston, he founded Scholz Research & Development, Inc. to develop and market his inventions, many under the Rockman brand. Scholz holds several patents related to his work at SR&D over the years. He was described by AllMusic as an "un-rock n' roll" figure who did not enjoy the limelight of being a performer, preferring to concentrate on music, production, and inventing new electronic equipment. In more recent years, he has dedicated much of his money and time to charitable work. Dude is a pure genius. Flowers!

    Just found your channel- props for your genuine opinions. I was in HS in the 80’s and I thank God for that. I’ve been to >100 concerts. I play guitar and write songs. Without hesitation I can tell you I saw Boston at the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill (84), they sounded as pure as their vinyl album. Best vocals live I’ve ever heard. Period. Thanks again and keep exploring my friend👊🏼

    The song you were referring to in your opening remarks is "Hooked On a Feeling," which was a hit twice: once by BJ Thomas and again by a band called Blue Swede. Both of these releases pre-dated Boston, who released the greatest debut album on rock history. There isn't a bad song on that album. Of course, 2 minutes of Google research before recording would have told you what I just told you and made you sound way more credible.

    Reaction videos to songs they have played and researched don't really have as much appeal. In fact, I was intrigued by those opening remarks. I knew it wasn't the same song but I had a hard time going from one to the other in my mind. He sounds way more credible for his not hearing it before having mixed up the two rather than less credible.

    The best part of the story of Boston is that this debut album full of smash hits was written by by Tom Scholz. He also played most of the instruments. When he couldn't find the effects he was hearing in his head he designed and produced them himself. He graduated from MIT, was working a Polaroid while producing this album in his basement. Record label guy comes to visit and says "Lets get you out to L.A. get some great musicians and producer" and Tom says no. The rep gets up to leave turns in the doorway and says Fine do it your way. Before Tom has time to say anything, the rep says "And we'll split the publishing with you."

    Pegasus, this is the first track on their multi-platinum debut album. The audio on the music video is a radio edit of the studio recording (the second verse was edited out). Brad Delp sang ALL of the vocals, both lead and harmonies. The theme of the lyrics is how music is tied to our memories and emotions; hearing an old, familiar song reminded him of a past girlfriend from years earlier. If you hear only two more "Boston" songs, "Foreplay/Longtime" and "Hitch a Ride" are the ones I recommend.
