    I like how at least one of her brothers was genuinely happy to see her and wanted her there. Don’t get me wrong, they’re all pretty selfish and just because someone loves you doesn’t mean you should ignore the bad stuff. But it’s nice that they included one halfway-decent family member to help establish why she tried to put up with it.

    Burinnu Thats because occasionally being nice is an important part of being a manipulative abuser. If the abuser is cruel all the time, the victim would eventually leave. But if you throw in the occasional instance of kindness, it gives the victim a reason to stay and hope that the kindness will come back. You’re right, it IS very good writing; not because it makes the family any less horrible, but because it shows an understand of how abuse works, and how it plants itself in the mind of its victim.

    Boston, due to heavy immigration from Catholic countries (including Vietnam), was throughout the 20th century the most Catholic city in America. Catholicism places a lot more emphasis on larger family groups than Protestants, and therefore they stereotype Protestants as too individualistic and less concerned with the importance of family. Also, Catholicism puts a lot more ephasis on religious figures and religious holidays, while the Proestants believe that faith in god alone is the only thing of importance.

  • @gianghuynh9570

    @gianghuynh9570

    Well the mom being a Protestant-bashing Catholic is such a Vietnamese thing to do. Well the parents are no doubt refugees that fled the country in and after 1975 at the conclusion of the war. And if they fled they would have been supporters of the Ngo Dinh Diem regime. The thing about that guy is that he is as super Catholic, to the point that he tried to ban all other worship, which was a bad move because culturally Vietnam had a history of religious tolerance and freedom, and also most of the population in the South were Buddhist. Anyway, Catholic and Protestant chicken fights are still relevant in Vietnam nowadays. I remember going to a wedding where the bride’s side is Protestant and the groom’s family is Catholic. It was the only time in my life I could cut the tension with a knife.

Up until the end of the 19th century they’d celebrate “Pope Day”, a holiday where Protestants from both the north and south end paraded effigies of the pope, proceeded to get into a massive fight with bats and bricks, and then come together again to burn the pope effigies at the winning team’s designated spot.

    Well family being Vietnamese has a lot to do with the way they live now. Diane’s parents are most likely refugees that fled Saigon in 75 or later. The thing about these people is that they always long for the past, about the time before the war’s final outcome and what could have been. That is why you see one brother’s obsession with a baseball game where their team loses, and it seem to be a family tradition as well since everyone was okay with him hogging the TV just for that and even watches with him. To these refugees, their team did lose in 75, they had to live the consequences of that defeat and they never got over it. Another aspect of this family is how they have embraced the American life fully and the father in a Diane’s flashback refused to discuss Vietnam with her. That is usually one way to for these refugees to deal with the trauma of their flight. They resent Vietnam and what it has become, in their eyes, communist hell. I often read report of Vietnamese nationals traveling to America and get harassed by the Vietnamese refugees of 75. That is certainly a minority and the extremity, because I have meet many people that had to run and they just had a very loving longing for their former home. Some even told me I am lucky to not have such conflicted feelings about my home country, and I still have a home back in Vietnam. This was during my time studying in Australia. Diane’s father is also a professor in Vietnam study, no doubt he would have been very conflicted person, having to constantly be reminded of his past home and it’s controversial history. Finally, this also explains why later on in the series Diane’s trip to Vietnam didn’t turn out as good as she hoped, because her parents are probably from the South and in her distraught to get away from MPB, she landed in Hanoi, the north. The two regions are vastly different in culture, people and cuisine and the lingering bitterness of the war still exists somewhat to this day. Diane, already without any knowledge about her home, found herself in a place that was probably not even her “home”, is a perfect tragedy of the 75 refugees. Whenever a former Vietnamese 75 refugee wants to visit Vietnam they always choose to stay in Saigon because that was their home whereas Hanoi was the seat of power that upended their home. I read the show’s credit and they have quite a few Vietnamese working on it, and it shows perfectly in subtle details.

    You know what stands out the most to me with Diane's family? The Black Sheep, Gary, because he's adopted. As someone who's aunt went adopted a child and seeing Princess Carolyn go through the process of adoption. I can only imagine what the Nguyen's had to go through to be able to adopt him. Adoption is NOT an easy process, even if you're a well-off person/family. Not only that, but Gary is an entirely different species to them. (I'm not exactly sure how far the "Human-Animal" relations goes in the Hollywoo Universe, but I imagine it was something that had to be taken into account.) Even if Diane's family were utter shit to her, I think the fact Gary exists shows they can actually seem to care about and love each other.
