Bio
Multi-Instrumentalist Reinhardt Buhr has composed 17 albums in 10 years time.
At the end of 2019, his work went viral over social media, reaching more than a hundred million views across Facebook and KZread.
Reinhardt combines the Laser Harp, Spanish Guitar, Electric Guitar, Electric Cello, Australian didgeridoo, Israeli Shofar, Spanish Cajon, Synthesizers and Piano via a live looping system to create an extraordinary symphonic orchestral sound in only a one-man improvisational act.
Reinhardt Buhr was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1988 and grew up with
no passion for music at all, In fact, as a teenager, he became a computer gamer and
began abusing alcohol at a very young age. His first job was at a small liquor store, where he earned 20 cents an hour. After that, he worked as a packer in a supermarket. His plan of
becoming an animator failed when he started abusing marijuana and alcohol on a
regular basis.
At the age of 19, two of his closest friends began learning the guitar. Reinhardt
immediately fell in love with it. With no formal training, the three friends simply
taught themselves how to play. A year later, Reinhardt was inspired by a Flamenco
guitar player, and began learning Flamenco Rumba Guitar from KZread videos.
One day, he was sitting at a small roadside steak restaurant with his parents, and
there was a man playing solo guitar covers. Reinhardt approached him to make
small talk and the owner of the restaurant overheard that Reinhardt played a bit of
Spanish Guitar music.
So the owner asked Reinhardt “Why don’t you come back next week to play, and I
will give you a steak and 10 dollars in return?” So Reinhardt Buhr played his first
solo Spanish guitar gig that following weekend and hasn’t stopped since.
Reinhardt Buhr quickly became known around South Africa and formed a duo
band called “Wild Lettuce”. He and the drummer performed many national
tours. They also opened for a lot of great artists. But unfortunately, Reinhardt fell
into a dark habit of abusing alcohol, drugs, and cocaine.
This affected him, his career, and everyone around him in a very negative way.
The band broke up. Reinhardt Buhr went solo and left his hometown, hoping to
escape the drug scene, only to find himself moving in with someone who also had
a cocaine problem. The whole cycle started over again.
At the end of 2016, Reinhardt hit an all-time low. He was at the point of death. He
fell on his knees and pleaded with God to step into his broken life. When things
could not get any worse, God in His full mercy and grace, stepped in and changed
his life completely. Reinhardt and his wife, Mandie Buhr, both experienced God’s
salvation and were baptized together. They left a lifestyle of abusing, marijuana,
alcohol, and drugs, and began on a beautiful road of salvation and healing.
During the biggest transition of his life, Reinhardt was playing a gig one day. As
he was playing for hundreds of people, He experienced a voice telling him to make music
for God. When Reinhardt made the shift from playing for fame and fortune to
playing for Christ Jesus, everything about his music changed! You can even see
the transition from his earlier album called “Organic 432hz”, to his latest album
entitled “Arise”.
To this day, Reinhardt Buhr makes music to God. This is his way of worshiping
His Creator and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

So there are a few other videos out there trying to show how to slave the RC-505 to other clocks in outboard sequencers. I tried all day to get it to work and all it ended up doing was clobbering the tempo in my sequences in the memory of the 505. So I got real lucky and found this video of yours. I took your advise, well somebody's advice anyway, to use the RC-505 as the master. It works like a dream. It sends the tempo of the sequence that I have stored in the memory. So when I hit All Start and All Stop the Arturia BeatStep Pro fires off with it too. It then displays the new clock speed for each song tested. It sinks right up and starts playing the outboard gear that the BeatStep Pro has already loaded. So Each song I have in the Loop Station has a default loop set to the clock speed I develop the sequences with. That loop is set to run in #1 and stored to memory. I bring up the corresponding tracks in the BeatStep Pro to mach that work. I also have a KeyStep keyboard that get's slaved from the RC-505 for it's clock speed also. It has another independent sequencer that allows the performer to drop the last note while the sequence is playing. So what is amazing is that the recorded loops in the Loop Station can have 8, 16, 32, or 64 steps by recording an original sequence from a saved sequence in the KeyStep before hand, and then have the same sequence trigger a different synth with a dropped note in the sequence. So now the Loop Station is playing back 8 steps or 16 steps while the KeyStep is syncopating with 7 or 15 steps per pass. All this can work together for complex loop lengths of 64 steps to start with. The amazing thing is that this video of yours solved all those headaches. I just mute one of the sequences in the BeatStep Pro and let the 505 take over after it is looped in live. What is cool then is I have a couple of sequenced loops in the 505 that can be deleted after they are used up and un-muted in the BeatStep sequencer. They are still there in the BeatStep. They just are not going out to the audience. That leaves a ton of soloing opportunities and a bunch of live tracks to add from real instruments and other synths. This will make everything change for the Berlin School type music crowd. All this because the audio recorder is the master sync clock. I'm still putting it all together. But my experiments today took on an amazing turn. The KeyStep can drop the last note on the fly. It allows for improvisation while in sequences. ...was that geeky enough? -- Thanks for the tip.

Great video Reinhardt. I have a question. At the completion of your first loop, is that what triggers the 505 to start sending clock to your Novation Circuit? If this is the case, I assume the 505 sends a midi start/MMC play message to the circuit? I want to be able to create a loop, and have an rc-202 be the master clock for an akai force, and I'm hoping I can have similar results. Keep up the great work.

  • @SteveGuitar

Reinhardt, amazing work! Your videos and music are incredible. So we’ll done in every way. Question: does the 505 record everything from the circuit? Or does it just sync and play it? In other words, if you stopped everything on the circuit, would 100% of the sounds from the circuit go away? Or does anything from the circuit record onto the 505? My hope is that I could keep a drumbeat going by midi at all times but not actually record it on to any of the five tracks,. But when I want to, I’d love to ecord the synthesizer part of the circuit onto one of the tracks of the 505. Possible?

In your video preceding this, you begin your demo with a beatbox and by saying you prefer the freedom of working without the RC505 metronome function. Here, your demonstration of how midi clocks the Circuit and the Effects begins with a beatbox and you make no mention of the metronome and none is to be heard. The RC505 is detecting the tempo of your beatbox as if it was a tap tempo and broadcasting the Midi accordingly. That is a really impressive function.

In my opinion this video is the most important information regarding the RC-505 as the master midi clock. I added a few tweaks last night and can slave 6 outboard sequencers with the 505 as the master clock. "Midi Setup Boss RC-505 So I have another way of going about all this sync stuff. Make the RC-505 and it's internal midi clock the master. Once I did that, thru a tech cheat, I got rid of all the artifacts and the pesky re-altering of the destination tempo speeds. You need to burn the first track temporarily and save it at the speed that you will develop your outboard sequences at. You make templates that contain an audio click track that you can live with later when you develop sequences or any other tempo required consistencies. The 505 has an algorithm that does a comparison of the existing master tempo set for a song and the ( midi sync on ) for each track. It will reconfigure this when you are done creating the first track of any song. So if the desired destination click track is set at the same tempo as the master track speed then the conflict at the first recording is resolved. So your start position must have a first recorded track with the matching speed. I just cut the output volume on the first recorded track and start looping what I want to use on the second track. The RC-505 is put to sleep because it is done trying to quantize and calculate the new master tempo speed. Using a clear click track helps. The 505 is intuitive in that it attempts to set a new master tempo speed. Once that corrected tempo is thrown into the mix, pun intended, you get those pesky artifacts disappearing. Now when my start and stop midi messages coming from the RC-505 get sent out all my downstream sequences in other gear all all in sync. The secret is to make the RC-505 the master and to trick it into liking the speed of the first track. I have not experimented with dropping the template track after several other loops are recorded. It would be interesting to see if the 505 will try to reset the master tempo speed or not. It depends on what you record I guess. I start by recording my outboard sequencer stuff, like a snapshot of what it currently is like. Then I mute the outboard tracks and run internally on the 505 loop track. I do this because I'm using a Line 6 Helix as my effects chain while recording loops or overdubbing existing loops. Then later in the performance I can fader out of the loop while bring up the original outboard sequences. Anyway these loops of outboard sequences are already performed at the same desired tempo speed. So it all comes down to when the master midi sync clock speed is accepted by the 505. I tried to reverse all this by making the 505 the slave. The algorithm to reset the master tempo speed can't be defeated. It's a great thing that the 505 sets a first track's master speed on it's own. But it can play all kinds of heck with downstream slaved tempos. The artifacts come from when the clock speed or tempo changes. I hope a few people try to do more work on this. The secret is to make the 505 the master and the other sequencers the slaves." Thank you Reinhardt Buhr

Just use the inboard click and loop in time… it’s not weird algorythm, it’s common sense! If rc is the master… listen its click! Good news for non-clock workflows… new loopy pro app will get the bpm from the first “loopable” audio in the first loop (it evens trim unnecessary audio from it) but that feature will hardly arrive to any hardware looper any time soon. Hope it helps and blessings

Pro tip for all those who want to *slave* the 505 to other devices without the dreaded glitches and artifacts - simply filter out everything except clock (and CC's if using those) from the midi stream going into the 505 :) Don't ask me why, it just works. I mean tempo is synched but it seems like novation circuit loses all the preset voices once it is connected to the looper.( to be specific: drum functions play the same dull sound. all the buttons same poor quality sound. midi and synth tracks dont give any sound at all) I dont get the problem. I am not familiar with cable types. I tried to mess with the settings in the looper nothing worked. I have no screen on circuit tracks so i am not sure if there is an option button on it. tried to scan the manual couldt find anything either. Love your videos man! Also have a question. I see you’re able to build a loop with several layers before activating your Circuit for the beat and once you do it’s synced up, but I am struggling to do the same with my setup. Every time I hit rec/play it starts my drum machine automatically. Is there a setting within the rc-505 that you had to set so that you could trigger your circuit on its own? I am trying to do this with a Korg Volca as my sequencer, perhaps this is something that only the circuit does or just something the Volca can’t do. Thought I’d ask in case you had any ideas and before I resulted to buying new gear. Cheers

Reinhardt, may I have a question? I have rc 505 too, and recently I got a Novation Circuit as well. What Im not sure about, how exactly to connect to the RC505? Just the midi cable? Somewhere aux cable was mentioned. On the loop station I found it, but where to put in the Circuit? Sorry, Im a beginner. The other thing Im not sure about is the output to the speakers. It goes from the RC or the Circuit? I would be so glad of some answers.

You need midi cables, circuit goes into the Rc the Rc goes to speakers, ... from output. The midi out from RC to midi in on Novation to sync, for some reason mines not syncing though even with cables, I've not registered it yet so maybe that is restricted it. Big thumbs up to this guy Amazing artist ,Big love.God bless.

Hello Could you please tell me how the “tempo sync” works in RC505 edit settings and for what purpose. I would also like to alter the tempo of the pre-recorded input signal (like mp3, 3rd party loops/clicks) feedable into the input of the RC505... I thought I used to be able to manipulate/alter the tempo of these in the past but not working for me again lately... or was I just dreaming? Is it possible to alter the tempo of input fed into the RC505, after saving it as a loop?, and if so, how?

Does anybody know how to change the tempo on the rc 505 without it chopping and messing up the sound that you recorded? Marc Rebillet did it on his video somehow, but I don't know how in the world he did it, but he did. He changed the bpm by like 10 bpm and the sounds were still the same? Anybody know a way around this?

Hey yo, Mark (20) from germany here. I have plans of buying the 505 and connecting it with my RC-30 Looper, which is placed on the floor / pedalboard. So do you know, if I could controll the RC-30 with the RC-505 & the RC-505 with the RC-30 in terms of starting / stopping (& saving) loops ??? And could I save loops from the RC-30 on the RC-505, so the RC-505 kind of expands the RC-30's memory (again: kind of) ??? You'd really help me out if you could answer at least some of my questions here. Greets from germany (cologne)

Do I need send to speakers, or speakers are connected to the Boss505 as your previous video ( so no output needed for Novation) ? I hope my english is clear enough to be understanded.
