Friday night watching Dave have fun with a new amp - perfect entertainment of the highest order. Makes every other review of the MK 11 look staid and boring. Dave hits the spot that all other KZread guitarists fail to reach and the best bit is he makes most of it up as he is going along rather than being stuck in a rut with pre-learned bits.

Seems like that's where "budget" stuff goes: You add a few things that cost virtually nothing ("variations"), chop off a couple of things that are comparably cost intensive (leg) and keep most other things the same (which has become cheaper to manufacture). Result: A "new", "improved" version that is quite a bit cheaper to produce -> more profit. Not necessarily a bad thing - depending on what they chop off and what they add.

I seen a similar video as well, maybe the same one, and given that BOSS emulate a tube driven Power amp stage, winding the Master volume to full and controlling the tome volume using the channel volume does make a difference. It is a warmer deeper tone with what appears to me as having more depth similar to a valve amp at full giging volume. Give it a go, its all subjective though

Having already read a bit about the new one. I already had the impression that it was more of a remodel of the original one based off of user feedback. I think the extra flexibility with the stacked control knobs will make a pretty significant difference for those people that don't have a pedalboard. Or just want a versatile minimalist setup. I thought it sounded bloody good and I REALLY liked that spring reverb with the sympathetic vibrations of the springs coming through with punch notes. Sounded great. Dave got some authentic classic tones out of it, the spring reverb really helped pull that off. BTW. I finally bought my HX Effects after lusting for one after Dave's review. It was $100 off retail in the states for the month of October. Couldn't resist since the new price was lower than most people are selling it used. After a couple of days of fiddling I'm really loving it.

If I was totally happy with my 50 tho, I wouldn't sell it for an MKII, at least from what I am seeing and hearing here. Also: Fantastic playing! I just bought in the past week a Katana Mk I plus 6 button foot pedal for a killer price with the full knowledge of the Mk II being out. With the Tone Studio, FX Floorboard and Sneaky Amps, I don't see anything that makes me envy the new model at all. I will admit to not really liking the Katana initially, especially after all the buzz around it. Sounded solid statey and digitally to me. Was going to resell it. But I figured at that price, give it a week. Couldn't dial in a good tube sounding sound. But one night after playing my tube amps and having that rattling around in my ears, I tried again and came close enough to be pleased with it now. It really responds well to louder volumes. So she's a keeper.

Sir Vic Yeah I noticed that today regarding louder volume. I don’t get a chance to often play loud because of my wife and kids being at home and playing in venues that I can’t crank it up. I had the chance to open up the Katana on 50 watt mode today. I’m not a big fan of the adjectives us guitarists use but it really has warmth to it and nice sustain and compression when cranked up. And man it’s loud. Loud but not harsh. I’d love a Fender Deluxe Reverb or a Mesa Boogie Rectoverb. But I can’t justify that kind of money when I only get to play loud once or twice a year.

At first I was excited about versatility of this amp. But then I started to think of my "versatile" Boss multieffects- GT6, GT8, GT 10..They are long gone and I still own the same valve amp...I also came to conclusion that Katana is excellent amp for people playing at small venues, pubs and so on...grab and go sort of solution. When you drown any sound in delays and reverbs it will sound nice but it is illusion. True amp will sound good with no effects. If I had some spare money I would buy this Katana at once but since I can afford one amp per 5 years I will go for Marshall :-) Valve amp do not require resets;-) Great playing and feeling as always Dave. Keep on rocking!

Excellent video Dave!! Love the playing :-) What blows me away is you totally think "out of the box" example being..."let's see I turn the bass ALL the down, AND the treble All the way down too"... I find That to be amazing! I won't lie, I tried that but does not work for me, but sure in the hell works for you :-) :-) My opinion is ... All effects on amp are fun to use, BUT I actually love the Katana, 1st. Version because I use it in clean mode, add some gain, a tad of reverb, AND that's it!!! When I use my pedals, and rack multi effect the Katana sounds incredible!!!!!! What's crazy is I have tried other, little more expensive amps as well, but the Katana sounds sooo good that it's what I have in my set up now!! I can see if one doesn't have any effects, and using all the goodies on this amp can be great fun... I use my amps in the clean channel, and use external effects, for total sound control, also for a wide variety of styles and sounds, thus personalizing ones guitar voice. I have tried many amps using this method, but the Katana sounds the best so far, (hard to believe), in studio perfect, and on (stage/live) it tears it up!!!!(even the other guitarist was surprised, AND he was using an expensive tube amp) his face expression said everything, all I know is the more you used it, the better it sounds!! AND no need to worry about replacing tubes when you're on the road gigging :-)

Hi Dave, I bought a 50W MkII after watching your enthusiastic review of the 50WMkI, and I love it to bits. It is such a versitile amp, and being a bit of a software junky had to connect up Tone Room and down load patches. Anyway I digress, on the 50W MkII when I press the Variation button there is an ever so slight volume change but I put it more down to a different amp model, and the crunch is slightly more noticeable than the other amp modes. I definitely don't need the 100W amp so went for the 50w, but dissapointed they didn't provide the 100W features on the 50, like the 4 channels and the GAFC pedal compatiability. As mentioned below, try the Master on FULL and control the overall volume using the tone volume. You get that overdriven fully cranked valve sound. Found by accident by a BOSS rep. Try it. What do you think?

With the volume issue, I had the same problem in my 50w katana 1. If I made a change in the mode, the volume would drop. I then would have to just adjust the volume knob slightly and it would jump to a normal volume. I made an exchange thinking I had a defect, but had the same issue with the second one.

Great review as always Dave. Cheers! For anyone who doesn’t know, with MKI one can get the dual concentric dials functionality (i.e. all effects at once) using Fxfloorboard rather than Tone Studio

Although I don't own a Katana I did borrow a Mark I 100w for a couple of weeks (to see what the fuss was about) and I have to say once I took the plunge and hooked it up to the Tone Studio it went to yet another level. I was already impressed but all those pedals etc... from the Boss range really shone. Can't help but think this is Boss's thinking for the future so I wouldn't be surprised if, when linked up, the Mk II really comes into its own. I can be wrong of course but, well, I just have a feeling I'm not. For what it's worth my friend I borrowed the Katana off has had time to delve deep into the Tone Studio so he's much more aux fait and he likens it now to running the amp on its own (as I understand Dave does) to watching a tube Black & White TV and with the Tone Studio being like an HD plasma screen with 5.1 surround sound. The sounds he now gets for recording out of an amp costing under £300 are very impressive.

Hi Dave! I wonder why your Katana has a different volume using variations, my 100 MkII has the same output volume at each variation of every amp type!

I have the 100 x 12, I suspect it is the same 'core' amp in the MK II just with additional features, would you agree Dave? What I tend to do is have the 'power amp' maxed out volume wise, and adjust the overall level with the Master volume, seems to be some argument about this, but I find this smooths out volume output. The GA-FC footswitch is essential for gigging with this amp IMHO

The variations most certainly have different EQ setups than the non-variations and with the bass and treble turned all the way down like you had it, that may be why you're experiencing volume drops on the variations.

Sounds just like the mk1, volume fade on variations hmmm not good in my opinion, however I'm waiting for the shootout before I decide whether to sell my fender hot rod deluxe or not or which to buy mk1 or mk2 after I sell the fender

Hey mate I’m trying to match your clean setting. When you say gain & volume at 10 do you mean on full or 10 o’clock? And in the manual it says spring reverb is the red setting

I don't think it was supposed to sound and feel different. It's all about those few little additions. What attracts me the most is having 5 effects at the same time instead of 3 on mark 1. Variations are cool too, but I guess differences between them can be relatively achieved by tweaking EQ and gain. New effects and connectivity options... I am still resisting the temptation. Would love to see the comparison video.

I bought the original Katana 100 (because of your demos) and love it. The MKI is great out of the box, and even though it still sound good, I really haven’t seen anything on the MKII that makes me want to run out and sell mine. It seems like they rushed to say they have upgraded. The biggest upgrade for me would have been to include the footswitch. Great demo as always though.

I love listening to you play! I don't think it's meant to sound any different or better. It's the exact same amp with some minor incremental improvements. Like when car manufacturers update a model each year. I don't think you're supposed to rush-out to replace your Mark 1. Sound-wise, as others have said, maybe the speaker needs to be broken-in a bit...
