BOSS GM-800 Guitar Synthesizer & BOSS GKC-AD GK converter first use

Музыка

I was an early adopter of Roland guitar and bass synthesizers back in the 80s, and over the years I've had just about every product they offer. so when they came out with the new Roland BOSS GM-800 I sure wanted to get my hands on it as well.
I've had it for a few days but due to work and life I haven't gotten the chance to unbox it until tonight.
I also have the new GK5 serial pickup but all my bases and guitars have the GK3 and GK3B so I used the converter to convert from 13 pin to serial.
I really won't be able to give a great demo or get a feel for it until I get that pickup mounted on one of the guitars I have that doesn't have a 13 pin already on it.
Hoping I'll have time in the coming week.
The sound engine is pretty cool...
The menus seem easy to navigate.
It was up and running in about 5 minutes after getting it out of the box and connecting it.
The only real changes I made was to select the GK3 pickup, and change the levels. I'm sure there's a lot that can be done to fine tune it but I haven't gotten there yet.
As far as tracking goes, It's as good as anything else they've had, and maybe I'm imagining it, but the latency seems much better....
Time will tell...

Thank you for the demo. Does this work in combination. With other pedals in a loop chain? For example could I have, after this pedal, a delay then a loop pedal? Thank you 🙏

Absolutely... In fact, I've already played with it with a looper and it was even more fun!

John, thank you for the demo, as an owner of several GK-type guitars, and of course gr55, go10, etc. what is your opinion clamping this to those, with the purchase? Thanks, CJ

I'm about to get all of it put together on my pedal board and start using it live at shows... I'll hold back my opinion until I see it all working together. I'll try to post a better demo and rundown of my rig. It's gonna be tough to beat the tried and true gr-55.

Looking forward to seeing a demo of your new rig when it's done..! Do you know if this pulls of an Acoustic guitar realistically?

@@Virtual-Media it's only a synthesizer, with no inputs from the instruments magnetic pickups. Just the GK divided pickup. It has lots of acoustic guitar synthesizer tones that sound delightful. You could do alternate tuning with it, drop tuning. But, it will be synth. The beauty would be in assigning 12 string patch to just a couple strings and blending the guitar sound in. That would be awesome and I might try it.

Hi. Latency differences between gk5 and the old gk pu With gkc-ad adapter? Do you have guitar with midi piezo system also…like Godin? have you had the opportunity to try them with the gm800 and gkc-ad? 😅…thanks

So I have only had the opportunity to use the GK3b into the GKC-AD with great success. I used my custom bass with graphtech Ghost system also but I've not had time to set it up as precisely as the GK3b yet. I have a GK5b still in the box. I haven't played with it yet. I'll try maybe next week

I have a Godin Multiac and it works great with the GKC-AD on the GM-800 - highly recommendable!

Hi there! Are the ghost notes gone?

You mean from the glitches? Like when you fret and it triggers a note before you pick the note? That's a function of the pickup doing its job and passing on what it hears to the synth. The cleaner and more precise you play, the less artifacts like that you will encounter. Harmonics, fret buzz, odd muting, etc will all cause these glitches. Heck, even a bad/cheap cable does it. I have a short on my channel I posted last week where I am just banging the hell out of my bass and I only heard a couple of these glitches. I THOUGHT maybe this system is more forgiving, but probably not, maybe I was just being more careful? I did use it out at a show for the first time on Saturday and it did not disappoint, other than where I forgot to assign the expression pedal to one scene, so I had to use the volume control on the GK3b

@@JohnMHoyt Thank you so much for the well written reply, I have a GR-55 and it suffers quite a bit from ghost/extra unwanted notes when you play, especially the lower strings. you can remove quite a lot by changing settings, adjusting your play style, and a godin guitar. but they still sneak through anyways some times. I was wondering if it was worth upgrading to the GM-800 . I play the Cello sound on the synth a lot live and its worth gold to me having that capability.

@@samsschool3639 you will love the strings sounds on the GM! Holy cow it does sound so good... And there's a stock staccato string sound that is brilliant! On any of these, whether you have the piezo (like my custom graphtech ghost equipped rig) or the GK, the setup is critical for sure. I found my biggest problem was getting the levels set right. I have a tendency to think more is better, but in reality, dialing it back to give more headroom really increased the accuracy. I hate to be the guy to tell you to spend some money, but I'm gonna do it. Order it through Sweetwater if you are in the USA and try it out. Start with it and the GKC-AD and see what you think... Send it back if disappointed free of charge. I found my issue with the expression pedal not working at the last gig. It wasn't the GM... I had forgotten to turn it on for the two scenes I was having issues with. All is good now. But I do have a new problem... my bass has active pickups and they are too hot for the Morley Twin Mix 2 channel mixer. I think I'll just get a summing combiner and eliminate that.

Haha! I was affraid you were going to say that! I'm a sucker for all the "realistic non guitar instrument sounds" and If its way better then its worrh trying. At least for a full comparison
