    I bought my Soundlink Mini in 2018, it's been everywhere with me, it's had a hard life, and it's only just started to show signs of its age which is impressive, my Anker A3143 works like the day it was new, and so does my Jam Heavy Metal, both of which are a year older than the Bose and cost less when they were new, so although Bose stuff is good, it's not the best you can get.

    I've enjoyed my sounlink mini for 10 years of regular use and it still sounds as good as the day I bought it and holds almost as much charge. However, I recently compared the flex with a brand new soundlink mini 2 and agree that the flex has better treble, is louder and holds up better at louder volumes. The bass sounds equal between the two but the mini may seem bassier overall given the weaker treble.

    Dear Oluv, Do you plan to review the VIETA PRO GOODY at any point? I checked it in a store with my standard test songs and it proved some decent sound for the price. The Goody 2 by contrast, seemed a lot less fidel sound reproduction, as so often overemphasising bass. I tried to compare the Soundlink Flex to the Vieta Pro Goody but found no store who had them both.

    the soundlink mini is stereo and the flex is just mono same as the revolve that i sold to get the soundlink mini se. If you check the teardown from the bose flex its same speaker and stuff like bose revolve. the Bass was a little louder at max volume with the revolve than the soundlink mini but i cant go back to that mono speaker. soundlink mini over all.

    I like the form factor of the Flex as I carry it in my laptop bag. The cylinder type was just to awkward. The Charge 5 sounds better but bigger and a little more expensive. The slightly cheaper Flip 6 (GG), with it’s 3 band equalizer, would likely out perform the Flex. It’s still a little thicker though. The Flex fits my needs and sounds pretty good.

    I went with the flex over the flip 6 due to better build quality. I love the aluminum over fabric. It feels much more premium. I'm guessing the sound is not too big of a difference, but only those who have both of have tried both can truly tell.

    In a store demo the JBL tweeter didn’t sound clean. The Flex on its back has super clean and crisp highs. How without a tweeter I have no idea. I’m listening to it now as I type and simply stunned at how clear and accurate the vocals are and crisp the hi-hat and snare drums are. But on its back. When the Flex is upright I find the hi-hats and snare drum shrinks. I’m a percussionist so that’s important to me.

    The stereo thing is overrated with these small speakers. I have two Flex and in stereo it sounds a little bit better, but not earth shattering. And going between party mode and stereo mode is sometimes no difference depending on the song. Just one Flex still sounds very satisfying when just playing at moderate volume. Side note, I have another similar sized BT speaker that is supposed to be stereo (has two drivers) and it sounds mono compared to the Flex.

    I find the Flex ON ITS BACK to sound super clear and crisp, especially at moderate volume levels. Bose has position IQ that adjusts the EQ based on its position. And I don’t find the bass overpowering at all. It is a very low bass so not that in your face punchy bass that most speakers in this size have. I’m not a bass head either, but this low bass is quite pleasing and subtle.

    I continue to love my SoundLink Mini. It might not have the best sound, but it's pretty good. @@gtbigdog3507 in my case, the battery died close after warranty. And Bose wasn't helpful at all, no customer friendly resolution at all, even though the battery pack on the Mini 1 is user replaceable and I also told them I'd buy a new battery pack if they would slash the price a bit. I then went ahead, opened the battery pack and put two new 18650 inside, side effect being that I put two INR18650-35E inside and since the original pack has only 2330mAh batteries and the Samsung are 3500mAh the battery life went up by around 50%. Now the SoundLink Mini 2 has a non user replaceable battery, you have to solder to replace the battery pack and the batteries are even lower in capacity, only 2200mAh. Bose is really a scumback company. All though a lot of speakers have no user replaceable battery it says a lot about them if their second version of a product still has the design for user replaceable battery packs but not for the average person that buys a battery pack on ebay and put it in, they have to solder the fucking thing.

    Update| Bought the Flex, sounds surprisingly great for such a compact unit. Not the most detailed sounding speaker in the world (though for it’s size why would it be) but certainly far from “dull” or “muddy” sounding either. It has a much more warm, round sound signature than I was originally expecting it to have. It’s actually a rather satisfying listen for casual use because of said warmer sound signature and it gets decently loud too (still keeping in mind it’s small size) while still retaining some bass at top volume levels. Add in the convenience of it’s rather thin/ flat shape and it makes a great travel companion. Impressed. Original comment| Actually not bad at all, especially at higher levels. Certainly not groundbreaking by any means but surprisingly I’m actually not mad at it. It also seems like quite a nice form factor for slipping into a bag due to its shape which I can definitely appreciate over some of its competitors. Hmm 🤔

  • @lewis02mc

    @lewis02mc

    Another update (for anyone who actually cares) The Flex is great, whether it be that the speaker had some sort of successful “break in period” over the time that I’ve used it, or maybe that I’ve simply gotten used to it’s sound signature. Either way it really does sound pretty spot on for what is a small Bluetooth speaker. To my ears the bass seems to now extend a little further and also hit a little harder than it did straight out of the box, it’s definitely a noticeable change. The treble now also sounds just a little more refined and “airy” than I originally remember it sounding a few months ago and unlike many of it’s rivals, mids come forward surprisingly well, they don’t get too overshadowed by the other frequencies. I’ll also point out again that it really does get surprisingly loud for such a small unit, in fact it sounds so nice to my ears that I’ve began favouring it over my Charge 5. Overall, when compared to some of the other junk that Bose has put out in the past the Flex really does give me some hope that the company still knows how to make a properly decent sounding speaker. I’d even say it sounds better than some of its bigger siblings in the Bose range, pretty surprising given it’s size and price. Highly recommend it.

    @lewis02mc Good to know. I only had my Flex for a few weeks, but so far I really love it. And I never been a Bose fan before. I pretty much only listen to it on its back or hanging somewhere vertical. I find it much more open and airy that way rather than standing upright. It sounds more compressed upright. With its position IQ I believe on its back Bose bumped up the treble and it might have reduced the bass a tad. My theory is when on its back Bose assumes it will be on a hard surface and the bass port on the back will have extra reverb, so a bass EQ reduction will sound the same. And as a beneficial consequence of lower the bass EQ it makes the mids and highs more present; thus a brighter more open sound.

    I got a second Flex and you’re right. It’s not double as good. Main advantage of two is it can get louder at a lower volume setting which means a lower distortion point per volume level. In some songs you can hear the stereo separation, but with just one I find Bose did a great job with their DSP to give a faux stereo sound wish just one driver. FYI the flex sounds much more wider on its back.

    Appreciate your reviews Olav, very informative and i actually went ahead and purchased the JBL PB 100 based on your reviews and it is a beast for outdoor listening.Just a heads up for what has to be 'bargain of the century' over here in UK. Urbanears Ralis RRP £169.99 now £49.99 from HMV online and i would love you to hear it and find out what your opinion is,it has very impressive bass and i think it is well worth the money.Cheers.Don

    The Ralis has the same innards as one the Marshall speakers (the Stockwell I think). It sounds pretty decent for its price alright, but it is much larger and heavier than the mini bluetooth speakers presented here. The B&O Beolit 15 is a similar size but sounds quite a bit cleaner - worth a look if you can source a used one at a cheap price.

    I've seen at least 20 reviews of the Soundlink Flex comparing it with the competition. All of the reviews play popular tracks like yours, but all of them are similar and do not adequately show off the speaker. If you really want to test a speaker you have to listen to other types of music as well, solo instruments like piano or acoustic guitar, vocal music, and different kinds of orchestras including jazz and classical.

    he has GG. GG is superior to TL because TL has a bad trebble frequency response. the TL is objectively worse. i had both GG and TL. in bass quantitiy, GG goes lower than TL. TL has boosted upperbass but obviously you have no chance to EQ it yourself. you're stuck with the Tuning because TL has some very small peaks the 3 band EQ in the app won't please
