Bosch Dishwasher Heater Relay Repair Part 1

Video shows how to replace a defective heater relay on a control board module for a Bosch SHE44C dishwasher. The heater relay overheats the solder connection on the control board and eventually the dishwasher will no longer heat the water. This problem results in the dishwasher seeming to never finish. Sometimes the panel will show a "1" to indicate that the water is not heated sufficiently. This repair is applicable to many models. Always disconnect electrical power before working on your dishwasher. Also, check to see if your unit is part of the Bosch recall before you attempt repairs...mine was not listed. WHY the relay must be replaced is found here: • Bosch Dishwasher Heate...
In simple terms, a relay is an electric switch that is operated by an electromagnet. The coil voltage is the voltage at which the relay is designed to operate the switch. When an electric current is passed through the coil it generates a magnetic field that activates the switch, which in turn passes current to the load (in this case the heater). As the relay is energized and de-energized, arcing takes place at the contacts. This arcing is what wears or burns the relay contacts and eventually results in failure. All relays have an expected lifetime... they are an electromechanical device. In general, the closer the load current is to the maximum rated contact design current, the sooner the relay will fail.
Please note that Bosch manufactures some models that use a heater relay with a 12V coil (a few boards may have a 5V, 9V, or 24V coil relay, but they are more rare). The coil voltage is usually shown on the relay or in the part number. Also, a 12V relay has a coil resistance of 400 ohms while a 6V relay is 100 ohms. The R46-5D12-6 is a 6V coil relay. If your control module has a 12V relay, use R46-5D12-12. The "-6" and the "-12" identify the coil voltage. If you are not sure which relay you have just post the part number found on the top of the relay here and I will help identify it for you. Cheers!

I can’t thank you enough for making this detailed video. My 87 year old mother had this problem with her dishwasher. After 3 Sears servicemen and $600 of work didn’t fix it, she was ready to give up. I saw your video and decided to give it a shot. I order the part and soldering equipment off Amazon for about 30 bucks. After practicing soldering a bit on an old modem circuit board, I soldered the new part and put her machine back together. It’s been running perfect now for several months. I can’t tell you how relieved she was getting this taken care of. THANK YOU!

Thank you for sharing your experience. I don't what to say about the servicemen...hmmm? At least you were able to do what they couldn't. That is a really good idea to try out your soldering skills on an old board. You made your mother proud for sure! Cheers!

Thanks for making the video! I have a Bosch SHU43C0x/22. It runs well until there's 1 minute left on the cycle, then it gets stuck in an infinite loop. All other parts and functions work well. I hired a technician from an appliance company and showed him this video, but he said, "This is DIY, we don't do DIY. We can only replace the control board, and it is $375 on backorder with no estimated shipping time, maybe one month. Plus $200 repair fees." This is too much to repair an old dishwasher. So, I paid him $205 for the 15-minute diagnosis. Now I found a handyman who agreed to give this "DIY" method a try. It may cost me another $250 whether he can fix it or not. It probably would have been wiser to just order a new dishwasher in the first place since I'm not handy enough to do this myself. But I think it's worth a try if this dishwasher can have a second life. Just a quick question: Do you know which model of relay I should buy for this Bosch SHU43C0x/22? Thank you so much in advance! Just a quick question:

Yeah, you are not likely to find an appliance repair technician to replace the relay on the board. There may be 1 in 50 that might do it. As for the relay, I am not sure which relay the SHU43C uses. Look on the top of the relay for the coil voltage. Expand the video description to see the relays that I mention there. If you are still not sure, post the relay part number and I will verify it for you.

Fantastic! Spending 5 bucks for a simple repair sure beats spending $500 on a new machine any day. The standard answer you will get from an appliance repair man will be to replace the control module (very costly with parts & labor) or just replace the entire machine. The normal repair man will definitely not troubleshoot down to the component level on the control board. You have successfully accomplished a repair that you could not hire someone to do. Kudos!

Thank you very much for your help. My Bosh SHU43C, wich is not part of the recall, had exactly the problem you described. I ordered a NTE ELECTRONICS R46-5D12-6 POWER RELAY, took my old soldering iron that I hadn't used since high school and fixed the thing in less than an hour. My wife who was ready to buy a new dishwasher and our kids who had to do their own dishes now think I'm a hero. I didn't tell them yet that you are the brain of the operation. THANKS again

I started with a Google search of something like "Bosch dishwasher will not complete cycle" and found vast amounts of information that were describing my problem in great detail. I checked my PCB board and found the burned solder joint on the relay precisely as others had described. I give full credit to those that took the time to post their experience with this. However, I could not find a video showing how to fix it, nor could I find a recommended relay. Thus my video was born.

Great walk through. After watching a few repair videos where they just re-solder that point. I agree that if it burned there's a problem. Obviously that relay takes a beating and a higher spec part would be the way to go. Thanks for the simple step by step. You even showed the little tiny clips that hold the clamshell together. I only broke one in the process. Cheers!

My dishwasher had the exact problem. I resoldered the joint and have been lucky for a couple of years. Since that time, I've become much more confident with desolder and solder and the dishwasher is failing again. TIme to open it back up. The replacement relay has been waiting all that time in the drawer and I am sure I can replace it now. This video is incredibly helpful!!! THANK YOU! My KitchenAid fridge has, since the resolder of the dishwasher, had a similar problem with two relays and two capacitors which fail. Got that board out and rather than send it for a $250+ repair (or $800+ replacement... If you can find one), I bought parts for $25 from an eBay seller who had all the right parts compiled, and did the repair. Now time to go back to the dishwasher and do what I should have done in the first place. UPDATE 1 MARCH 2021: SUCCESS! We have a Bosch SHU66C05UC/47 Dishwasher which was here when we bought the house. The relay was 6 volts, an NTE R46-5D12-6. Worked like a charm! Thank you!!! Our hearts go out to all who survived the Texas storms. Don't mess with Texas!

It sounds like you are already well versed in what you need to do to replace the relay. If you have not watched my other video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/hICYy4-Jl9mnnrg.html) about making repairs to the board, I would suggest doing so as it might help you. Thanks for commenting and I hope your repair goes well. Cheers. If I may, I would like to take this opportunity to give a shoutout to my fellow Texans that are still recovering from the snow/ice storms a couple of weeks ago (today is 3/1/21). Nearly everyone now has power and water restored except for those that have severe damage that has made their home uninhabitable. As for me, I slipped on the ice the day before the main storms arrived. I broke my left leg requiring 3 hours of surgery. I was sent home just before the first storm hit. I am glad that I serviced my generator over the summer and my brother in law was able to come over and start it right up. If it had not started, we would not have faired very well in the single digit temperatures as we lost grid power for many hours. We were also able to keep the faucets running to prevent busted pipes. I think I need to get a t-shirt that says "I survived SNOVID-21".

Hi. Your video here is infinitely helpful, so thanks very much for making it & posting it. I have this same problem with our dishwasher, with our SHE46C06UC/40 Bosch Dishwasher I removed the panel & took the circuit board out. No obvious scorch marks around the contacts, but one of them has definitely separated from the soldering around it. It's as though the solder was drilled out & the pin from the relay was inserted into it. Otherwise, it's clean & shows no signs of overheating/burning.

This is one of those videos that should go in KZread's permanent library. It allowed me to order the part (2 vendors in Amazon Marketplace) before I tore into the machine. Then it helped me get the thing apart without breaking anything and with fewer scraped fingers and a lot fewer cuss words than otherwise. The burned solder joint looked just like he showed. I soldered in the new part, put it back together, and it worked. This appears to be an engineering flaw in this dishwasher. Having such a small relay with such tiny contacts right on the printed circuit board with no heat sink, handling up to 1400 watts, is asking for trouble. Either the relay or the solder joint appears to fail predictably after 5 to 6 years. Agglomeratedideas has done a major favor for all of us who own Bosch dishwashers by posting this outstanding video. Thank you!!

I am glad my video helped you repair your dishwasher. It was a frustrating experience for us when our dishwasher started acting up because it was intermittent at first and we were not sure what it was doing. Finally, I dug into it and found the relay problem. I thought there might be a KZread video showing how to make the repair, but I could not find one and I figured that others were probably doing the same search and also coming up with nothing. So, when I got my relay in the mail, I asked my wife to video the repair. Like I said, I am glad that the video helped you and others make this simple repair. I hate to think of how many people spent hundreds of dollars having their dishwasher repaired or, worse yet, replaced it because this little relay failed. Thank you for taking the time to comment. The switch KZread recently made in going to Google+ has made it more difficult for people to comment, but the comments help to keep the video showing up when doing a search on the web. So again, thank you as it will help others too.

THANK YOU! We have the exact same dishwasher as the one you repair (only in black). We called Bosch, but they would not help us at all till we had a certified repair call on the washer. Really? Spend $100 on diagnosing the same problem EVERYONE is having? And then there was no guarantee they would send us parts or anything, either. But your video and a $8 soldering kit from the local hardware store got us up and running in NO time! We have run the washer 6x since the repair, and it has worked flawlessly. You saved us major $$$ bro!! Where is the tip jar?? PS. We read that the real problem is not with the relay - ours was not appaently damaged - but was the soldering itself. We'll see if it holds up over time, but the reparied soldering solved the problem for us. Thank you!!! You are a champion of the people! Show this review to someone you know so that they can be proud of you. Seriously.

I am very pleased that you were able to get your dishwasher up and running again. However, if I am reading your comment correctly, you only resoldered the relay and didn't replace it (correct me if I am wrong here). If that is the case, it is only a temporary repair...the problem will come back. Please see Part 2 of this video and I think that will help you understand why you really need to replace the relay to make a permanent repair. The link for Part 2 is in the video description on the "About" tab. Let me know if I can help you any further. Cheers!

Yes, the shipping can be significant when ordering the relay, but it still beats paying big bucks for a professional repair or scrapping the DW for sure! Thank you SO MUCH for posting this video!!! I was just about ready to throw this Bosch DW in the garbage heap. Wouldn’t fill with water, and wouldn’t heat the water I put into it. Ran the dreaded never ending 1 minute cycle. I replaced the fill valve ($20)... no help. Replaced the float switch ($20)... got the DW to fill and drain, but still wouldn’t heat the water or finish the cycle. Then I found THIS VIDEO! What a god send! Found the relay you suggested on Amazon for $4. Popped out the control unit, swapped out the relays, and even with my terrible soldering skills... WE HAVE HOT WATER!! Our elderly 8-10 year old DW is back on the job after a $44 repair. You saved me so much time and money!!! GOD BLESS YOU, SIR!!!

That is great that you were able to get the dishwasher going again. And yes, sometimes replacing the relay does not fix the issue (even though it was bad) because the circuit trace on the board is damaged. The way to fix that, as you have found, is to solder a jumper over the bad section so that the new relay can do its job. Cheers!

While for a different model your video was very helpful on pointing me to the possible cause of the failure. Our SHE3ARF2UC/21 dishwasher stopped heating for the drying cycle, and showed E:02 error. It did finish cleaning but of course dishes didn't get dry like they used to. In my case it was NOT the common problem with the relay overheating and causing a bad solder joint on the PCB. I suspect that the controller in our model is using an improved relay for the heater, there was no sign of any overheating and the solder connections were fine. I had ordered a 6V and a 12V relay just in case, and it was a good thing. Our controller board uses 12V relays. The problem in this case was the coil on the relay had opened, so of course the relay would not energize. If you have an ohmmeter you can check this on your board. For the 12V relay the coil resistance should be about 400 ohms. The common pin on the old relay was stubborn but I was finally able to get it de-soldered and the new relay installed. Works like new again. So if you don't see the over heated solder connection check your relay coil for proper continuity. BTW the relay on this controller board had an extra normally open pin, so you have to de-solder that as well.

My Bosch did not run right for quite some time. First indicator was the "Sanitized" light was not coming on at the end of the cycle. I started to notice that the water did not seem as hot and not as much steam when I opened the door during or after a cycle. Called Bosch and they recommended using a dishwasher cleaner like Finish (which would temporarily help with food particles). Dishwasher started to run for hours (sometimes 4-5 hours for one cycle) and Bosch wanted outrageous rates to send a technician to my house. Thank GOD for You Tube! I'm no handy man and hand a little frustration taking my panel and control board out, but this fix literally took just a few minutes once I ordered the $10 part off Amazon and did the soldering. All said the repair took about an hour start to finish (I also pulled dishwasher out to clean dust/debris under and behind the unit). Probably saved $200-$250 in repair costs by trying it myself!!! Thank you for posting this video!!! Now the dishes are getting as clean as they did on day 1. Sanitized light shows again and cycle time is normal and much shorter.

THANKS AGAIN @AgglomeratedIdeas !!! Two years ago your video helped me replace the relay on my Bosch dishwasher for the big fix. I posted a thanks here back then. I'm back with appreciation again; just a different dishwasher. This time it's a nine year old Fisher Paykel DD24 drawer dishwasher in my motorhome that gets used at most 6 months out of each year. In short, replacing the relay fixed it. I wondered if this might be a more common problem across manufacturers, and if so, why a plugin relay isn't used in dishwashers instead of soldering it into the control board. In this case, the Fisher Paykel threw an F4 error meaning the heating element wasn't working. I couldn't believe I had another dishwasher with a heating element problem. Luckily I found a service manual on the internet that included a wiring diagram. I cut the wire from the controller going to the heating element and put a multi-meter in series to measure amperage. There was none when the heating element was supposed to be on. There were other tests in the service manual that enabled me to test other components in the circuit and they all passed. I took out the controller to inspect the relay on the board, but saw no evidence of overheating. When I took the relay out and tested it, even though I could hear the contact arm moving, there was no continuity across the points. I replaced the relay and the dishwasher is working again.

That's great troubleshooting! Relays can "click" and still not work as you found out. The contacts burn to the point that they no longer conduct current. You mentioned that you saw no evidence of overheating. This is often just a result of how the relay is physically constructed. For the Bosch relay that often burns the board, the coil of the relay is sideways and the path for the heat generated by burned contacts is a very short distance. For relays that have a coil that is vertical, the contacts are on the top. The heat generated by failed contacts has too far to travel to cause much (if any) damage to the board. Is this a common problem across manufacturers? I really don't have enough evidence to answer that. But, the heater relay is a hard working component as it has to handle a heavy electrical load and I would think that it would be amongst the top components to fail for that reason. Should the relays be plugged into a socket so that replacement is easy? That would definitely make fixing them a easier job, but I don't think manufacturers will do that. For one, they want to save every penny possible, and two, they don't intend for the consumer (or tech for that matter) to replace the relay. Selling a new control board is much more lucrative than repairing one, but often they get to sell the consumer a new dishwasher. Its all about making a buck!

You’re welcome! I’m glad you were able to fix your dishwasher! And thank you for posting your achievement. It sounds like you successfully mastered soldering. I’m sure others will be encouraged to try this repair even though they too may not have experience soldering components. There are several good KZread videos that show how to solder and unsolder components and might be quite helpful for them to watch.

Good job…glad you got it working again! Smart idea to repair and keep your old control as a spare. I have read on several forums that many have replaced their control more than once. Apparently the new control modules are better (they are not being recalled), but still continue to fail after a few years. Too much is being asked of this poor little relay and it just can’t hold up long term. It is only good for just so many on-off cycles before the relay’s contacts burn out.

A very well done video. I followed this video step by step, and sure enough, the heater relay was burnt out. $10 later a new one was ordered and I fixed it. It sure is a lot better than paying a repair man big money for a simple fix. Thanks again and great job!

This worked!!! It actually worked! One advice I have for others is to use some type of 90degree metal pick at the 4:35 section. Use the pick to work around the edge of the entire plastic box vs poking from top down at each individual tab. I didn't replace the relay, I seen many other videos and blogs stating just soldering is good enough. I am guessing back in the factory that one particular step was messed up for all items. If I run into the problem again I will replace relay.

Thanks for letting us know about another successful repair. As for the cover, I mentioned in my video that I was supporting the front panel with my knee, but clamping or taping the cover in place while you unscrew it is a good idea too as you suggest. Also thanks for giving us another source for the relay. Having more choices is nice. BTW, it does seem that the relay issue shows up at about the 5-year mark for many people.

That's awesome! I wonder what the odds are of someone having this particular issue with a Bosch dishwasher, visiting this video for a solution, and then living just 10 minutes from the manufacturer of the part to fix it. I think I'd have a brain hemorrhage trying to calculate that! Anyway, I'm glad you have a working dishwasher again. We're still enjoying having ours working properly again and I know you will too. Good job!

I have a Siemens dishwasher model SL84A305UC/01 which had the same problem. The control board layout was different but it had the same bruned pin on the relay. I replaced it with the NTE relay and it now works. I used a piece of solder wick to create a heavier solder trace from the relay pin to the connector pin. This should help dissipate some of the heat from the relay and it will reduce the resistance to create less heat from the board trace. The heater on my dishwasher draws 10A.

Thanks for the video. Was perplexed why the dishes got clean but the dishwasher walls got dirty with sticky goo. It was easy to find the relay online. I never soldered anything on a circuit board, and really appreciate the detail on that. I even bought a solder sucker - worked like a charm. Before I forget - thanks for mentioning the four solder points. After I put the wiring back into the circuit board, I thought about that part and realized I soldered all five contacts. Took things apart - and guess what I found: I soldered the OLD relay back on. Whew - without the reminder to use only four contact points, I'd sure be wondering why the thing still doesn't heat the water :-)

I'm glad your repair was succesful. As for the relay contacts, my board only had four soldered...the 5th pin just stuck through a hole. Some boards have all five pins soldered. Since the 5th pin is not used (it is the normally closed contact) in the heater circuit, it doesn't need to be soldered. If the control board had all five pins soldered, then it is okay to solder all five on the new relay. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your dishwasher again. Cheers.

Good job getting your DW up and running again! To answer your question about a possible hazard with the contacts sticking, the honest answer is yes, but it is a SMALL possibility. I have seen relay contacts that weld themselves together, but it was with larger relays (contactors) that carried heavy currents. The real risk here is possibly causing damage to your PC board with the heat being generated by the bad relay. Replace your relay as soon as possible (1-2 weeks) and you should be fine.

Thanks for making this. Our dishwasher (an SHE55M) has been doing this for some time, but this video really helped me disassemble the unit without breaking anything. I did the same temporary fix, but also took down part numbers of the relay and the control board so I can decide which I want to order. Bosch should really have fixed all of these regardless of age.

+Todd Johnson "Bosch should really have fixed all of these regardless of age." ...as far as I know, Bosch is still making control boards with a similar relay. In my opinion, the relays will continue to fail about every 5 years or so.

When ordering relays, you might want to get a few of them. I just replaced the relay (NTE R46-5012-6) for the second time in 2 years in our SHU66C05UC. As Big Daddy reported (below) both times the solder joints on the board looked OK with this model. But replacing the relay fixed the problem. He reported that dissecting the old relay confirmed that it was burned-out internally. Maybe it's easier with other models, but I found that gaining access to the circuit board seemed to require some cutting of the plastic cover on the right hand side to dislodge it. BTW: this job's a lot easier the second time around. Thanks so much, Agglomeratedideas!

Great video! Ours is a SHX46A06UC/14. A couple of years ago, we found the burned solder connection, fixed that, and when that failed a week or so later, we replaced the whole control board for ~$100 (eBay part). Now, after a power failure and surge, that board has failed too. Thanks to your video, and some part cross-referencing to confirm the proper relay part number, I have just ordered the new relay (R46-5D12-6 Series R46--which I think is the correct part) for under $4, from Amazon. Thanks again. I expect to get our machine back in service in a couple of days.

Bummer that your eBay find was wiped out by an electrical surge...that was a good price for the board. I am assuming that you ordered the replacement relay for your old board. If so, it should be as good as new after you get the new installed on it. Your experience with just re-soldering the joint only to have it fail within a short period is typical. The bad relay will usually just melt the new solder off of the pin again and you're back where you started. The R46-5D12-6 has a 6 volt coil, so if that coil voltage matches your existing relays on the board, then you ordered the right part. I hope your repair goes well when you get your new relay!

Thanks, and you are absolutely correct…there is a recall for this issue, but unfortunately it is limited even though the problem seems to be widespread. My DW was not included in the recall as many others have found too. I believe the relay is failing prematurely because it is being used near its max current rating. I selected a higher rated (12A vs. 10A OEM) replacement relay hoping to get a longer life out of it. I may replace my relay again after a few years just for the peace of mind.

I purchased a similar model 6 years ago at Lowes with a 5 year extended warrantee and it stopped drying the dished at the end of the cycle. I tracked the problem to a 10 Amp relay (switch) on the control circuit board that overheats and melts the solder connection. I did a little research on the internet to see if others had a similar problem. I found multiple instances and that Bosch had issued a safety recall for this problem in other models but not the one I purchased. This is not an isolated incident. The control board costs $150.00 plus the labor to install it. If you don’t care about lasting more that 6 years it is a great dishwasher.

  • @AgglomeratedIdeas

Thank you for commenting. You are exactly correct...this particular failure for the Bosch is not isolated at all. The heater relay failure happens at about the 5-year mark give or take depending on how often you run the dishwasher. The repair is relatively cheap and inexpensive if you replace just the relay. Replacing the entire control board is not cheap. I think the Bosch is a great dishwasher also; it is just too bad that the heater relay is being utilized near the top end of its amperage rating and fails. I hope you got your DW up and running again. Thanks again.

I’m sure that you will do fine with the soldering…and you have only 4 pins to solder. For those reading this, there was not very much damage showing in this particular case. The solder had melted back just enough from the pin to break the circuit & only some slight discoloration of the PCB was visible. Considering that it takes about 370 degrees to melt 60/40 tin/lead solder, severe damage can be caused by a bad relay. This gentleman has a “best case scenario” with only very minor damage.

Okay, I think I understand what you are referring to...the photo showing the burned solder contact at the relay pin. When you unsolder the old relay the burned looking solder should come off leaving a clean solder pad on the board (search KZread for “unsolder”). An exception to this would be if the damage to the board is so severe that the solder pad is no longer usable. A jumper would have to be used to make the connection. See comments in this thread about using a jumper to make a repair.

Thankyou for posting. The temporary fix worked on my Bosch Model SHU33A02 - I used a thick length of copper wire to give a slight heatsink effect. Glad I saw this before investigating the heating element.

Yes, several Bosch models may share the same control board. Also, the relay used on the boards is similar even if the control itself is slightly different. The big difference seems to be that some use a 6V relay while others use the 12V version. So, this fix works for a lot of models and, like you said, it is indeed a "super easy fix." I'm glad it worked for you!

Thank you for a well-done, concise video. Even though my dishwasher is a different Bosch model, everything you demonstrated was perfect for this unit., right down to the burn mark on the board The relay model you suggested is still available and fits perfectly. It's been decades since I handled a soldering iron.

Yes, the dark areas are the circuit traces. A PCB starts out with a thin layer of copper applied to a non-conductive substrate. A masking material is applied on the copper to cover the areas that will become the traces. An acid bath dissolves the copper that is not wanted and leaves behind the desired "printed" circuit traces. A jumper can repair a board best if soldered to a couple of other nearby pads on the same trace. A single strand from a heavy gauge stranded wire makes a good jumper.

Thank you. This was my first circuit board repair, so I was a bit intimidated. However, it was easy, and only took 1 hour, including reassembly. Relay was burned out exactly as shown in your video.

Yes, repairing a circuit board can be a little scary if you have not done it before. But, as you found out, it is really not a big deal. Thanks for sharing and I'm glad you fixed your DW. Cheers!

First, thanks for the fantastically helpful video. I have a SHU43c05uc/37 which stopped heating the water, however the wash cycle would complete as usual. I replaced the heater relay - one pin was melted/burned noticeably (the one on the top right with the component side faced downward and the prongs/sockets for the plugs toward me). I replaced relay 899-1c-f-c 6vdc (song chaun) with the nte r46-5d12-6(11) 6vdc from radio shack. I soldered the new relay in correctly, there's only 1 way the pins will line up, I soldered 4 of 5 pins (the 5th wasn't soldered). Anyways, the unit still will not heat the water. I actually ordered two relays in case I screwed up so I removed the replacement relay and soldered the back up on. Still no dice. The diagnostic program indicates a heater failure. I used a multimeter and I get continuity between the pin that was burned and the prong for the red wire to the heater (the one on the right side of the socket with the component side of the board faced down). So I'm assuming that the pin is soldered into the board correctly. Resistance reads about 4.5 ohms with the multimeter set to the most sensitive ohm setting (200). This reading is the same as I get when using the pin to the right which is on the same trace (looks like that pin goes to a jumper leading to a trace that goes back to the hot prong for the red heater wire). Is there some other diagnostic I can do with the multimeter? I do not want to take the unit further apart to access the heater unit which, I believe is on the right side. Is it possible the heater relay and heater unit could have both failed at the same time? That just seems so unlikely but I sure think my repair was done correctly. I am certain the relay had failed, it was definitely burned with the damaged pin melted to the point it no longer contacted the board. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I wanted to add that the diagnostic mode isn't that clear. The manual refers to buttons that I don't have ("scrub mode") when my unit has only a "rinse and hold," "quick wash," "regular wash," and "power scrub plus." There's also no led for "clean" but there is one for "sanitized" so I'm not entirely certain I'm interpreting the results of the diagnostic mode correctly. I'm using the repair manual found at the following address: www.applianceblog.com/mainforums/threads/35002-Bosch-SHU43C-Repair-Manual

A faulty flow switch, NTC or heater can also cause this problem, but it is usually the relay. Since you found a burned pin on the relay, that means it was just a matter of time before the DW quit heating due to that. However, with the relay now replaced, you will need to dig a little deeper. Here is a flow chart that shows how to troubleshoot the heater circuit: imgur.com/aYgvfAW There should also be a schematic diagram inside your unit that might help. It is usually rolled up and stuck in a crack near the fill valve. BTW, it is normal on some models that only 4 pins on the relay are soldered just in case you were wondering.

whauser I didn't see your post about the repair manual diagnostic mode. The schematic diagram should have the correct diagnostic mode instructions on it.

AgglomeratedIdeas Ok, with the dishwasher running I get 117v coming from the red wire that goes to the heater. So this means the board is working correctly (according to the flow chart). Is there an easy way to gain access to the heater itself so that I can test it? Or is there an easy way to test the NTC (temp sensor) and flow switch? If I have to pull the thing out and take the side of it off and the inside apart to access the heater (that's what the repair manual says anyway) then I'm not too keen on that. It looks like it's $150 and that's getting to be more than what I think this thing is worth (plus my labor to do the work and I don't work cheap!).

whauser Ok, the dishwasher now appears to be working correctly. I can't explain it. I tried it yesterday and it did not work and the diagnostic mode seemed to indicated a heater fault. Then I take it apart again tonight, do the continuity testing on the circuit board which comes back good and put it back together. Then I run it to test it as you described and I get the voltage coming across the red wire to the heater relay and when I stop the cycle and open the dishwasher, lo! hot steam! I didn't change anything from yesterday, just taking it apart and putting it back together. Maybe I didn't have the plug for the heater installed all the way, that's the only thing I can figure. I know I had them on right because I took a picture the first time around and have been putting them back that way each time I take it apart (one of the available sockets on the board isn't used for some reason). I can't explain it, but the darn thing is working again, at least for now. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this help.

Thank you for the video! You look like you really know what you are doing. Unlike us, we took off too many screws and the door came off the hinges!. Oops, we did get it back on, with some effort but no leaks!. Unfortunately, the solder fix did not work for us so we are going to have to replace the relay. I am hoping that you can help us find the relay that we need, our model # is SHU33A06UC-22. If you could help it would be much appreciated!

Yes, that is true...there is a recall. This is noted in the first paragraph of the video's description. Anyone having the symptoms that a failed relay causes should first check to see if their dishwasher is covered by the recall. Or, if you come across this video and own a Bosch dishwasher that is not currently showing any signs of a malfunction, check the recall list anyway. Better that than to wait for it to fail. The bad relays did indeed cause fires. Mine was not on the list.

Bought my Bosch SHE-45M02UC/50 just 2 years ago. Recently started seeing problems like in your video and many in these comments: - After a wash, some dishes were not clean and all seemed to have specs of detergent residue on them. - The "Sanitized" light was not coming on at the end of the cycle. - The water did not seem as hot and not as much steam when I opened the door during or after a cycle. - Used Dishwasher Magic to clean out any detergent deposits, BUT THE WATER NEVER GOT HOT ENOUGH TO MELT THE WAX PLUG. So as per the video, took out the control board and saw the burned solder joint. Same relay location and everything. Bingo! Was going to just buy a new Control Unit assembly except that it costs over $250! Now going to get me a solder gun, solder-sucker, and some solder wire. It's a real shame that Bosch hasn't sufficiently addressed this issue. Many thanks for showing a DIY guy how to fix this!

pieman7 Wow! Only 2 years old! That's a real shame, but at least it is an inexpensive repair. Match up the coil voltage to your existing relay and order a new one. The DW is so new it will probably outlast the replacement relay, so order a spare while you are at it. Cheers!

Thanks so much for this. Like yours, our SHE44C was not 'covered' by the recall. As I began undertaking this repair, the control panel face would not 'unseat' as yours did because various wires leading to the control panel had MELTED into the plasticy black panel on the interior portion of the door. Stopped immediately and called Bosch. They're sending out a repair person but will not replace the unit as it's not part of the recall---I would say the recall was too narrow. Will advise further.

Hi, Paul. Your relay is made by Panasonic and is rated at 10A maximum load. It has a 12V coil, so the replacement would be the R46-5D12-12 made by NTC. The NTC relay is rated for 12A maximum load and should give a longer service life than your original relay. I hope your repair goes well. Let me know if I can help any further.

Have just replaced the replay on my Siemens dishwasher (SE26A260GB but I guess many models are essentially the same). Quite an easy job if you have a soldering iron and solder sucker (both can be inexpensive). For those in the UK where the R46-5D12-6 is unavailable I bought a 6V Mini Miniature Power Relay SPDT 15A from switch_elec on ebay at £1.89 delivered. They sent me the specification including size/pin out and its a good match for the R46-5D12-6. It's also available from RS (Stock No.476-573) at £1.66 but delivery cost is extra.

I'm a self employed carpenter and have a fairly broad experience with almost every aspect of construction and some car mechanical know-how, but I'm completely green in this area. So please excuse my ignorance. I don't own any kind of voltage meter, nor would I understand how to use it, in order to specifically pinpoint the exact problem with this dishwasher. But I do believe, based on everything I've read online, that it's this damned relay. I took a few pictures of the board.
