Seeing these matches again is fresh air. For example, no screaming and grunting when hitting .Fortunately I lived that era. Now a "beautiful" Wimbledon 2024 played from the baseline awaits us...

I remember this match well; pretty much everyone felt the winner of this match would go on to win the Championship, but Edberg deservedly won the final that year - which was Becker's first-ever defeat on Centre Court.

Two of my 3 favorites growing up: Cash, Becker, Wilander. It was awesome to see Becker play Cash at Wimbledon. Boris was just a little better. I'm still taking Cash volleys though ;-)

Cash had a very old fashioned textbook style. He was one of the few right-handed players to still land on his right foot when serving (oddly enough Becker was the only other in that era). The "textbook" style could make his game seem slightly mechanical. I think his forehand in particular suffered - he didn't get the power that his physique might have allowed him to.

This was a real grudge match with a lot of gamesmanship and psychological one-upmanship going on. The media had really hyped it up and it was very tense. Becker himself was known for that kind of thing and cash was also notoriously peevish. A lot of tension.

I think its well known that Boris had one of the best backhand volleys at that time. Not Cash like the guy said.

I don't think that's true. Becker was known to put slightly too much slice on his volleys rather than punching then cleanly. While he clearly was a good volleyer, he was not the very best.

NO, he had a very tough draw, if he beat Becker he would come up against Lendl then possibly Edberg. Both Becker and Edberg seemingly had the upper hand against Cash. Becker had a bigger serve and a powerful is somewhat inconsistent return and pass. Edberg had a bigger second serve and very good first serve, tremendous return especially off that backhand. Cash is weaker on his return of serve,. At this stage of their career Cash was already drifting behind both Becker and Edberg.
