BOREN - A film about sailing & wooden boats.

Спорт

Boren, the boat has an incredible story. From the East coast to the Bahama's and all the way to Alaska, she's seen it all. She sailed through hurricanes, ran into a coral reef, broke the boom and keel and yet still survives in all her artistic beauty. Boren now resides with a crafty sailor in the San Juan islands of the pacific northwest. This is her story. A story about sailing.

I once owned Kingscruser #9 an all mahogany 28 ft. sloop, beautiful boat. Sold her in the early 1980’s, but the fond memories still remain. There’s something about the way a wood boat, with a teller moves through the water, makes you feel connected.

Great video, and nice boat! In Norwegian "Børen" may mean two things: 1 A burden, to carry something heavy, have a heave load, either physically or mentally. 2. Sail wind, where we say "motbør" which means wind against you. Or "medbør" which means wind with you. Motbør and medbør, can also be used to describe how life is going.

I can see the same joy in his eyes when he's talking about the boat as I feel more mine, great work from everyone involved in the making of this piece. I'm really surprised at the size of the interior of the boat, head room most of all which wasn't all that common in those days.

Well filmed/edited video. No actual sailing footage because you would be lucky if 1% would show a comfortable onboard environment. Truth is these old designs are lovely sailing on a nice flat sea for a few hours, but crossings and general cruising is a wet, cramped and uncomfortable existence. Much like the next time you take a horse and carriage non stop for 6-7 days, which you didn't, unless self flagellation or extreme nostalgia is what you are into. Keep the romance alive guys! Someone out there will fall for it....

Lovely boat, superbly maintained, and you are blessed with beautiful cruising ground. Worth mentioning that the Lion Class was designed and built first in the UK in 1950, though the designer, Arthur Robb, was born in New Zealand. The Cheoy Lee ones are special, like the Laurent Giles Vertues which they also built, because they used teak for the hull. Do you have an engine as an auxiliary or are you truly engineless?

Modern boats and materials have their advantages but are generally designed for light weight to strength ratio and high volume/accommodation. Note the narrow beam and deep keel of this vessel. This is the evolutionary result of centuries of sea vessel design, mostly all weather fishing ships. She will track through the water better, won't slam, isn't tender (too tippy). I have a high volume plastic boat and I love her. But let's admire this classy lady as a classic beauty with design characteristics that will get you safely through the storm.

Gigantic handmade wooden boat built from an iron W-beam on the slopes of Mount Constitution, still rotting up there in the forest after App died at almost 100 yrs old, still putting the finishing touches on it to his dying day.
