    Some colleges will reject you if your application is too good. Colleges care a lot about their official ranking and their acceptance/admissions ratio. If a lower ranked college accepts an someone who can get into the Ivies, then they won't accept them because the person will most likely not attend. No school wants to be the "safety" option. Their acceptance/admissions ratio would decrease, making them look worse.

    I've got the exact same stats as the guy and also got rejected/waitlisted everywhere except for my one safety. Really seems like GPA, regardless of the difficulty of your coursework, is the biggest factor for acceptance at all top universities, which is the complete opposite of what my shitty guidance counselors say.

  • @samuelmatzner6216

    @samuelmatzner6216

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@harmanbans All of these factors are necessary but not sufficient for top university admissions. It also helps if you have one extremely finely honed skill rather than being well-rounded. There are just many more "well-rounded" applicants than applicants with comparatively few interests but lots of depth in one area, so the pool of people you're competing against shrinks-it's more complicated than that, but in a nutshell. Also, a lot of what we are seeing these days with UG admissions is really ideologically driven. Universities will accept as many people with really high exam results as they need to preserve their medians, and then it's about demographics and finding people with one or two national or international level skills. But don't despair because that isn't how professional school works. It's much more numbers-driven, so if you are someone who has seen strong exam results thus far, have faith that your hard work will pay off later on. Similarly, consultancies and I-banks will take people with high grades and test scores regardless of where they went to undergrad, because they have figured out that that's what yields the most favorable employee outcomes based on some statistical modeling of employee data. Grad schools have done the same thing, which raises some questions about how prestigious the university you go to needs to be if your goal is to get a job or end up at a top law or medical school.

  • @harmanbans

    @harmanbans

    5 жыл бұрын

    Samuel Matzner I’ve heard similar things regarding I-bank recruitment which is reassuring since I’m going to be going to a CC and transferring to UCLA, which isn’t the best for recruiting. However I feel like if I can not only get excellent UG grades but also differentiate myself (I own a business as well with strong projected growth) hopefully these college rejections won’t mean much in the long run. I think as the admissions process grows more competitive IB’s, grad schools etc. will begin realizing that they may get a better student from a lower university simply because the process is so competitive for the top ones now.

    This is so true. I went to crappy public undergrad, but a top 10 law school. Ended up in same place as people who killed themselves in high school to go to Ivies and took on huge debt. I was debt free. I've worked in hiring for 15 years now -- I pay no attention to where people went undergrad. Never heard anyone mention it even once in a Hiring Committee meeting. Only thing that matters is where they went to law school. Sad to see the stress that kids put themselves through for something meaningless.
