Wow that is huge !!!!!! Can you image the full ship !!!! That is going to be some build !!!! 🐕🙏💪👍💞🍺 enjoy your weekend
The Allies named it "Kate" according to Wikipedia. That looks like it could be turned into an amazing diorama.
Presently been building this kit with Kate. I found a real issue in cleaning the plastic for primer. Not sure why it was so hard to clean. Concerning the lighting I tried setting that up but gave up. I felt it was more trouble than it was worth and controlling the lighting seemed problematic. I agree with Nigel about electrifying models. I found masking circles for the portholes which was a big help. The one thing I wish was part of the kit are the mattresses. At Pearl Harbor it was decorated with the mattresses. I have seen them on line but so far very expensive . Great review!
It was called by the female name "kate" the Japanese name was "Tenzan". The allies gave Japanese planes names they could pronounce and so they were easier to remember. And they were usually female names like Betty, Judy and Kate to name a few.

Mostly female, except George, which I remember for some reason, lol.

@@NigelsModellingBench Hah! That's also the allies name for a Japanese fighter. Fighters were given male names and bombers were female.
That's huge! I guess aftermarket will produce the mattresses.

That’s a piece of art, how amazing. Great video as well 👍 not the next part.
Allied code names for Japanese aircraft were women's names for bombers and men's names for fighters.
Wow, I truly thought it had the mats on the tower. It does look nice
The decals smell really nice 😂😂😂🤩🤩🤩

But they do lol!!
Wow, that is an insanely large model but very cool. Makes me visualize what it was like to serve on such a historic ship and knowing it's fate.
My first thought: hell, where to put this when it’s assembled? 🤔 Thank you for this review, Nigel!
Hi Nigel, Thanks for the great review. This is going to be huge. I noticed on Scalemates that Border Models is selling a version without the Kate too. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff
Many similarities in the types of kits you have in your stash and what I have, from Pocher, the Border Lanc and a myriad of other kits in different scales and subject matter. I also have both the Takom 1/72 Bridge as well as this beast from Border. Comforting to know I'm not alone in my madness!😂😉
Pre-ordered this kit, recieved it weeks ago and looking forward to building it, that's if I find room for it. Also hoping they'll do an Enterprise or Midway one next.
Hiya Nigel. I don't think anyone watches you for an English lesson :) but since you asked, regarding 'Kate', AFAIK names like that are NATO codenames, like the Russian Foxbats, Floggers, Blinders, etc. or indeed as you mentioned in the video the Japanese Val. I think the English pronunciation is correct for all NATO codenames. Kayt as opposed to the Japanese pronunciation Kat-Aye :)
Oh my first thought was pin everything down and mount it to a wall like 3D art

'Kate' rhymes with 'mate', 'late', etc. The Americans named Japanese fighter planes with boys names and bombers after girls.
Hi Nigel, Looks like a great kit from Border models, again. I think that an interesting build for your channel would be to turn an old Monogram or Revell into a jewel. I bought a Mitsubishi Zero 1/48 from Pegasus ($12), out of curiosity : What would I get for 12 bucks? It actually builds into a decent little model.
As others pointed out it would be the female name of KATE rather than Kate' - as it was the US War Department that assigned the name (in 1942). Take the time to look up NATO reporting names for the Soviet gear - F-words for fighter/attack, B-words for bombers, M-words for AWAS/Patrol, H-words for Helicopters, and C-words for Cargo... certainly made it a little easier for us young Naval Aircrewmen
This would be good displayed with the Hasegawa 1/350 scale Akagi model, Nige. 😁 I have no idea when I will build it or where to display it but it is in my stash. There is a figure set to go with it. I hope the aftermarket detailing and figure companies go to town on this kit. In the meantime I’m thinking on how to scratchbuild that mattress shielding and if more LED lights can be added elsewhere on the island. 🤔
Why on earth they chose 1/35 I'll never know. They could have had one of the nicest 1/32 planes out there. Guess I'm going with the 1/72 Takom kit
I have this kit and it’s very good, the fact that they don’t include those futons when they are needed and on the box art is super annoying. The zero will be out soon too though

I know, especially as the Takom has them.
There is already a wooden deck for the kit. It's huge and not cheap but looks much better. I've had it for a while already and only just got the kit!
@NigelsModellingBench
20 күн бұрын
Just had a look.. they printed the decking as evenly spaced all the same length planks.. WHY?????
The allies had a name for all Japanese aircraft, so Kate was our name for it. I think the only aircraft that had much the same name was the Zero, from the year it was first made. 2600 Japanese Imperial calendar.
I would have glued the deck plates to some plywood/MDF or foam for stability.
Wonderful kit but where in the hell can one display the completed model?

If they did, the hull would be Kure, which doesn't matter for this kit.
Great review, Nigel. Sadly, it's left me a bit underwhelmed after seeing the kit and parts. I had seriously considered buying this, but the lack of rolled canvas shrapnel protection for the bridge is a deal breaker for me. Like you, I love the Akagi, and the Kaga, but I'll wait for a Trumpeter1/200th version.

I'm quite disappointed by this. It seems to lack finesse given the scale and size.
Hi bit off topic just about to build 1/350 bismark see everyone is painting as they do the build is their anyway to stop the tamiya extra thin from reacting with the paint when glueing parts etc to the superstructure, cheers

All Japanese aircraft were given code name, in this case, Kate, not Catherine. Kate short for Catherine.
