My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa. Paris (yes the one in France) has been my home for years now and I have every intention of staying here for as long as they'll have me. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much. Now I make videos about visiting Paris, traveling in Europe, and try to share what I've learned along the way. I hope you enjoyed what you found.
Links are affiliate links where they can be - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)

Crazy that just yesterday, I was thinking to myself, "Man, I miss Jay's vlogs." But I have so much to be thankful for already (let the man be, lol). I am just this random dude from Portugal who comes from a broken home, never had any proper guidance in life until I found Jay's channel back in the days. His content is not "just" travel content; it goes way deeper than that. Jay has a very particular way of showing that life is worth it, that struggle is part of it, that perspective matters, and that it's ultimately about the little things in life. I am not exaggerating when I say that this dude pulled me out of the gutter with his non toxic positivity lol
Delighted to see your post this morning. Hope all is going well for you Jay. Prioritize your health, both mental and physical. Post on your own schedule and don't feel pressured to post when you don't feel like it. We will be here when you do. Have a relaxing wonderful summer.

I went to Paris back in October only had three days in the city and did a nine day river cruise up to Normandy. I am so upset that we did the cruise because there was so much more to discover than what was up river. I can’t wait to go back one day rent a car and Discover places you have been. I am also a fan of Les Frenchies and between their info and yours, there is so much to see and do. Ty for your videos

Lucky you. You've explored one part of France. Next time you can explore another part. Drifting on a boat is a nice way to go.
Wow Jay, this video was phenomenal. First, you look like you have finally grasped your "place" and it shows! The division of you into TWO (God help us) is a smart move and one that will allow you to highlight "both of you." Also, note: you are looking fabulous! Had to say it. I've been watching since you did costumes in the VOD, so I feel like I have earned it to say something so personal. Now, drumroll please - - - Move over Rick Steves! PARIS IN MY POCKET is the beginning of a great thing and I can't wait to see this brilliant approach to travel fully take hold. You (Jay) are filling a void that is not being met by others and it is so on point as it takes advantage of up to date technology tools. I'm Team Jay, and Team Paris in My Pocket. I'm here for all the POCKETS. Just not the pick pockets! Bravo Jay - Bravo on this video.
literally have been checking youtube everyday. waiting for a new video.

Jay, it'll all work out. Maybe drop videos on a schedule: Two Tuesday's monthly? Maybe the second and fourth Tuesday? Maybe that way you (as well as us, your viewers) will feel that there is more to talk about and watch when you do post? I enjoy the work you do and appreciate your perspective on one of my favorite places! Looking forward to October!!
6 years ago I came for Paris tips but I stayed for Jay. I have enjoyed the ride so far and look forward to what’s next. Congratulations on your success, you deserve it!

I literally despise the term ‘content’. Meaningless. Make a thing with value. Not just stuff. Content = stuff. Regarding life…just do what you want. Stay as happy as possible, as healthy as you want, and I’ll watch whenever you pop up 🍷

It’s always interesting to hear your thoughts. Thanks for sharing these life updates.
I LOVE both channels, and think it is brilliant to separate in this way! The Jay channel is my favorite, but Paris in my Pocket is beyond awesome, and extremely informative in a truly modern way, while still keeping an eye on the more traditional scene. As a tourist, I am skipping France this year, sadly…but, I am still going to have a great time walking part of the Camino in Portugal and Spain. I know the Olympics will be fabulous, but they are not for me. No way will you be forgotten, and I look forward to lots more Jay-shares whenever they appear! Thank you, and your great team, for the dedication and excellence that you provide!
The scenery in this video makes me want to go to Bordeaux. Merci!

This video made me chuckle because I used to be firmly in the camp of those who think, "Why does this Paris travel influencer keep talking about his personal situations?" For that reason, I think it's genius to dedicate one channel specifically to providing content about visit Paris and the rest of France. However, I watched that "Paris travel influencer guy" long enough to get hooked, so I love catching up on what's going on in your personal life. Two very different channels and I love them both! 🙂

WONDERING - am glad to see you back!
As someone who has been visiting Paris for about 20 years, and focuses on good food, pastries, chocolate, history, and off the beaten path excursions, I'm impressed with your Paris in my Pocket. It is one of the best channels out there. One of our favorite recent outings was to Marly and the foundations of the Marly Machine in the Seine. So interesting! There are also plaques along the way at the spots where impressionists painted.

Nice to see you online again! Welcome back!
Great video. I'm in the same spot, trying to split some businesses while keeping the wheels on the car while going full speed. Keep it up and you'll pop through the dip. Thanks for great content, and especially on Bordeaux. Love that city.
Glad to see you back! Olympics will come and go, but Paris will always be there. Ride out the downswing and watch everyone return.
In Amboise, I had an entrcôte steak with a foie gras sauce... it's been five years and I think about it often. I was in food and have eaten everything from chicken gizzard to A5 BMS 12 wagyu... that steak in Amboise is #1.
It’s like 2019 again. Jay has vlogs all over France. Missing the costumes though.

I’ve been to Paris before. Seems like Bordeaux is gonna be in my bucket list next time I go to France.
I will be coming in October. So content is important to me when I visit.
Thank you Jay, great info. Loved all the info I saw yesterday on PIMP. 😀 I know a few folks that were thinking of coming to the Olympics but opted not because early estimations of the costs were so high. Some cost may have dropped but going INTL is generally a long haul planning job.

I could never forget you!
I live in Bordeaux (you can actually see my apt in your video) & the last place I would tell you to eat was the entrecôte place. There is SO much more to the excellent food scene.

Hi Jay. You posted this on the same day I arrived in Bordeaux for the first time. Funny to know you were just in town too :) Have you had the chance to check out the Darwin Eco-Systeme on the other side of the river? Strong Portland Oregon (pre-covid) vibes over there. Super cool and a noble concept too. I also wanted to take this chance to thank you for sharing your France insights on both of your channels. You helped me plan an unforgettable first time France vacation with my family. We’re going to miss France a lot, especially Paris. We’ll be home in Portland on Monday but I’ll be living vicariously through you, Les Frenchies, and Alain from Paris Top Tips for the foreseeable. Many many thanks!

There was a huge explosion of travel after the pandemic isolation, especially in 2023. I wonder if that’s slowing down a bit in 2024 and you’re seeing an effect of that independent of the Olympics. There’s definitely a bit less domestic flying in the USA, not sure about Americans traveling to Europe.
Elections (FR) and politics (FR & US) seemed to have bumped the Olympics from the spotlight a bit for me - at least I forgot about them with my sense of foreboding. Also - as someone still hoping to move to France from the States - I like hearing about life in France and general information. Paris is an amazing city, but it's too big for us to feel comfortable/not overwhelmed. I enjoy learning about the day-to-day. Cheers from Oregon.
A beautiful, tasty steak meal...
Welcome to my area of France. Hope you are enjoying Bordeaux. Will you make it up to St Emillion? As far are tourists, I am seeing a reduction in my bookings. I have a small rental cottage-a gîte-and this is my lowest bookings in 5 summers.
@JaySwanson
14 күн бұрын
Just a quick trip, but it's been nice. I was asking around town if people were seeing reductions here too but so far the responses have been pretty ambivalent
Could tourism be down because of economy? Personally, I’m making more income but taxes, insurance & food wiped out my raise. Flights to France much more $$$, avoiding because of Olympics? I put off my vacation there until Oct/Nov. Flight cost almost double what it was Nov ‘22 when last there.
@JaySwanson

That's a good point, there's probably a lot going on beyond the Olympic madness. I'm sorry to hear about your missed raise!
Don't forget "bleu" as an option for how you want your meat cooked. It is more rare than "saignant". It's one step above "tartare" 😉

What is your post-Olympics plan for your KZread channel?
Hey, glad to see you again. I am sure the Olympics would affect everything. There is NO way I would want to be anywhere near Paris during the Olympics. Any other time I would love to be there forever. I love London, I love Stockholm, I loved Lucern and Florence, but...........they are NOT Paris.
apparently, all hotels in Brussels are fully booked during the olympics... so hotel + train ticket must be still cheaper then a hotel in Paris when you booked & planned in advance....

I wonder how many people will come in for the day and head back to wherever they are, like Brussels or Amsterdam. Could definitely be doable for an event midday

@@JaySwanson that's my point: a lot! so to clarify, i live in Brussels and an acquaintance of mine, working in the tourist industry here told me this information and i just asked him again to verify. hotels for the period of the the games (both Olympics and Paralympics) are fully booked. so is the (train formerly known as) Thalys. so supporters who planned to go see the games early (think family and friends mostly) had seen the Paris prices and thought it was too much. so they searched for an other option and that was Brussels. why Brussels? -hotels didn't charge much more then normal. -the (train formerly known as) Thalys, brings you to Paris in 1h20, -has an international airport (very) close by (sorry for the trauma Jay... (but that was more the airline i believe then the airport itself) but why not other big cities in France? -big cities in the north don't have international airports -don't have such easy train connection -in the south there is the Tour de France for most of that period, so all hotels there are also fully booked by fans and teams... the only city in France that might have the benefits of Brussels is Lille, but apparently part of the Games is there so also all hotels in Courtrai are fully booked for that period. and also in Mons, all hotels are booked by now, which isn't really close to any city where the Games are hold, but it's the only city where a direct "Eurocity" train between Brussels and Paris stops, which is reintroduced by the National Belgian railways and rides 2 times/day both ways, for max 50 euro/person one way and takes 3h. so people who love Paris and are in need for their Paris shot, because they don't live there, like me avoid it at the moment because of prices of the metro and in restaurants etc. (normally i go there at least 6 times a year) and people who go for the Olympics, avoid Paris because the hotels ask(ed) too much when they planned their trip.... same happend to London , as you mentioned in one of your video's. but people then stayed in ... Paris because of all of the above 😅
Apart from Paris, which cities would you recommend for a 10 day visit ? Love your channel getting your app soon haha😅
@Paul_C
14 күн бұрын
Well, my suggestion would be either to limit yourself to Paris and a max 1.5 hour train ride away. Or take the train South or Southwest towards the Mediterranean or Bordeaux. Guess you can decide where if the weather turns nasty... 😊
@JaySwanson
14 күн бұрын
I'd agree that the more cities you add, the crazier the trip and the more exhausting. There are plenty of day trips around like Reims, Rouen, Deauville, or even Bordeaux. But even though the train is generally really easy and straightforward for getting around the country, travel days (especially if there are delays) are always tiring. If you want a big city to spend a few days in, and you love the sea and/or the outdoors, Marseille is always a favorite of mine.

Also famous for Bordeaux mixture - is a mixture of copper sulphate and quicklime used as a fungicide. It is used in vineyards, fruit-farms and gardens to prevent infestations of downy mildew, powdery mildew and other fungi.
