Booster Seats: When to Move Into & Out of the booster seat

We all want to keep our children safe at all times. Driving is the most dangerous activity we partake in on a daily basis, but 4 out of 5 child passenger restraints are used incorrectly. I'm doing an entire vlog series starting with infant car seats and working our way up to booster seats. How to attach your child, how to install the seat in the car and expert tips on how to keep your kids safe.

This is about the same carseat my son has. He is a little over 4ft tall and we were thinking of removing the back and just using the booster. He is 6

Please make this decision based on his weight. A 37 pound girl was internally decapitated because she was in a high back booster seat. All the guides say it is okay for a 40 pound child though, but how would 3 pounds have made a difference ?? I would wait until he is at least 50 pounds minimum before taking him out of a harness.

We always have to make the decision based on height. Our kids are skinny! My 7 yr old has outgrown the height of her high back booster. She outgrew the height of her convertible at 5. She is 7 and 63 lbs and over 55 inches. It is still on but definitely not 1 inch from top of her clek oobr while I look around. My youngest is 4.5 and is even skinnier!! He is on the last rung height wise and only 30 lbs. And I never skimp on carseats. They have mostly been in clek seats...we have 4 drivers and vehicles so they have also used Britax and Chicco. Any advice?

@MonicaHolly143 haha! If only it were that easy. He has gained this year. 5 yrs 9 months and 35 lbs. Mine are all born premature except my 3rd, but it was the intrauterine growth restriction that lingers. When their blood flow gets restricted during pregnancy, their growth tends to be stunted. He was 28 weeks and 1 lb 13 oz. I guess I'm lucky finding carseats is my biggest worry. I have him in a clek oobr high backed booster once he outgrew the harness height of the clek foonf convertible couple of months ago. He is pretty well behaved in it. The other one is now 9 and 4 ft 11 so she is out all together and meets all the guidelines like feet comfortably on ground, shoulder harness in appropriate place, etc. She was my one non growth restricted, term-ish baby and is a giantess like her parents.

I misspoke. He is 38 lbs!!! But I took a week long carseat course for medical providers and they said age is more important than weight for the internal decapitation. The bones are 80% ossified at 4 which is why that is the magic number to forward face. Most are completely ossified at 6.

What if the kids are very tall in their torsos but have average legs. For example my 6 yr old is 83lbs and is around 4.5 ft tall but the backless boosyers are too tight for him to sit in.

Keep children that are under 50 pounds in harnessed seats. 50+ pounds should be okay in a booster but I would still recommend they stay harnessed til closer to 60+ pounds for their safety.

Dwarves do use boosters but also due to it being lifelong they have pedal extenders and other vehicle modifications that make driving easier for their size.

I grew up in the 90's and I have absolutely no memory of any of my seats if I did ever have one..however I am LUCKY because children are getting internally decapitated from being put into boosters when they are still too small. A lot has changed, carseat laws are still not safe enough.

Get a harness to booster seat. Those last until your child is ready for a booster. Personally I won’t seat a kid under age 5 (obviously they need to be the right weight and height too!) in a booster in my car

@@hannahscott6604 what is a "harness to booster seat"? I also have a giant child. She just turned 3, roughly 3ft 6 or so and atleast 45lbs. Funny story, she rode a ton of roller coasters when she was 2 because she was tall enough to ride them and yet young enough to get into the park for free lol. Shes obsessed with them for some reason. She emasculated a lot of older kids who were to afraid to ride the roller coasters. One kid said to his friend "look the 5 year old is riding it, just ride it with me!" And i responded "actually shes 2". Whats funny is that neither me nor my wife are tall at all, but we do have lots of tall family members and early growth spurts also run in my family. I was actually the tallest kid in my 2nd grade but now im a perfectly average height for a guy at 5ft 10 lol. Funny how growth rates work.

This kind of thing should really be decided by the child's weight before considering age or height. The Maxi Cosi harnessed seats has a model that carries up to 85 pounds. Highly recommended. It goes up pretty high for the head and if it still isn't high enough then you can put the original head rest for adults behind it for the support.

Wrong information, in my province Your child can use a seatbelt alone when they reach any of the following milestones: turns 8 years old weighs 36 kg (80 lb) reaches a height of 145 cm (4 ft 9 in) or more

Turns out, YOUR information is wrong. In your province they clearly don't focus on safety. Age is a horrible indicator. Some 8 year olds are twice the weight of another 8 year old. Also, 80 pounds is a good weight to START using a backless booster, not stop. Do cars in your province have very short seats or low positioned seat belts ?? A child is ready to be without a booster ONLY when they can sit and put the seat belt on and have it positioned over the lap, not over the belly and over the shoulder, not too near the neck.
