Boost Control for Cars That Need More Traction. - Jay's Tech Tips #37 - Real Street Performance

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you are trying to make a lot of power in a 2wd boosted vehicle, you have probably encountered the problem where you can't run low enough boost to have traction in first gear, AND run high enough boost to make the power you want in higher gears because of the limitations of the wastegate spring. A 10psi wastegate spring will allow you to make as little as 10psi, but will struggle to make much more than a maximum of 20psi (100% increase). If you are trying to make 40psi in 4th, the smallest gate spring you would want to use is 20psi, but then that prevents you from getting the boost down to 10psi in 1st for traction. Well today we discuss how to use a 4 port boost control solenoid to solve this problem and have low boost in low gears and high boost in high gears without being held to the normal limitations of the wastegate spring.

    Don't forget to point out how sensitive a 4 port solenoid is over a 3 port. 1% can make 3psi difference as opposed to 1% making 0.5psi

    Hi, I currently have twin small turbos and the wastegate springs are 0.5bar and I have a 3 port boost controller taking me to 1.2 bar. All works fine. However I'm hearing that if I go to a twin port wastegate and 4 port controller then I can promote quicker spool up. My ECU controls the controller and that may well already be slowing the boost pick up so wondered if this is actually worth doing. Its a 1100kg car mid engine RWD and has good traction. Am i also reading correct that if boost controll is via TPS then boost build up will be quicker when TPS increased due to boost already being created? Not sure if I have explained that correctly

    I have plans to be upping power on my stock '13 Evo GSR to about 400 hp at the wheels and an aftermarket wastegate and 3-port were part of that plan. First of all, will my platform support the 4-port you're talking about here and secondly, what if any other mods/parts are needed to support this? Are only certain wastegates going to work this way? I'm bone stock right now and plan to tune on the street with an experienced e-tuner using Evoscan...although I have no idea if he has any experience with 4-port boost controllers. Thanks to all the guys at Real St.! These videos are awesome!!

    +John C you are lucky enough to have AWD, so this wont apply as much to you at that power level. To acheive 400hp you wont need to lower the boost in 1st gear like an 800hp fwd or rwd car would need to. Your tires wont spin so in your case you could achieve your goals with a single 3 port solenoid.

    As long as your control frequency is the same and you're able to access the duty and correction approach to error it's just a solenoid. What makes the 4 port able to have the increased range is the fact that it's removing signal from the bottom of the wastegate's diaphragm and adding to the top of the diaphragm while a 3 port is just manipulating one or the other.

  • @jaymeagher1510

    @jaymeagher1510

    4 жыл бұрын

    In most cases a 4 port will offer is the most range the system can mechanically make. The limitations are what your turbo can make for max boost with zero wastegate flow and what your wastegates can flow running base boost. You'd want give more information to get a more complete answer. Will your system hold 10psi without boost creep to redline? Will your turbo flow enough air to make your target boost at a reasonable back pressure/drive pressure? Basically what you end up with with a 4 port @100% duty is all the signal leaked that was going to the bottom of the gate and all available signal to the top of the wastegate forced closed. You'd plumb the 4 port just as the instructions state. Please be careful with octane at these boost levels, "bad coils" in your community are a side effect of detonation.

    +Alexander Dougin Some applications can, some can't. Your same wastegate and boost control setup may not get the same results on an LS1 with an 88mm or an evo with a gt30r. It's a good place to start when planning out a build because there are lots of variables that can affect this right? Engine size vs Turbo size, Turbo size vs Wastegate size, wastegate placement, ethanol or gasoline. And even more variables like boost behavior. For example, a big engine with a small turbo vs a small engine with a big turbo will both have different shaped boost curves with the same wastegate spring. Wastegate position may cause a high boost spike and fall off, or creep to higher boost after reaching target. The "double the wastegate spring" rule is a good starting point for someone laying out a build. It will cover the bases for many of the combinations of variables just mentioned, and leave enough room for the ability to have solid boost control without unexpected or undesirable boost behavior. Every specific application will be different and the spring can be adjusted as necessary once you have a place to start but at the end of the day, the 4-port solenoid method will achieve a wider available boost range on the same wastegate spring than a 3 port will. So if you max out the spring on a 3 port (whatever that max may be), and still want more boost in high gear, swapping to a 4-port solenoid can help you avoid upping the spring. but if your application can give you a wide enough boost range with a 3 port then you wont really need the 4 port.

    You'd have to use some sort of stand alone boost controller. You could get any one of the electric units on the market. Turbosmart makes a nice one. With the high drive pressures and short engine speed window on a older diesel engine you normally just pick the turbo that makes your power goal and let it eat whatever boost the unit will make.

  • @jaymeagher1510

    @jaymeagher1510

    7 жыл бұрын

    If you're using the solenoid to reduce the amount of boost that reaches the bottom of the wastegate you would plumb it the way you're talking about. If you're using a 3 port to add air to the top of the gate you would use it the way it's pictured. If you had an ecu that offered the control you could use a second 3 port solenoid and leak signal to the bottom of the gate and add signal to the top. This route you'd duplicate what a 4 port does. If my explanation doesn't help you look up the instructions for the greddy boost controllers and there's some pictures you can use to get a visual aid. thanks

    Hello Jay, I have a hondata 4 port on my civic I tried running a 10 psi spring but it maxes out around 18-20psi. I have it plumed per hondata 's instructions. My tuner has also played around with the frequency 's. Any tips ?

    I have a 3lb spring in my Turbo Smart 44mm hypergate with a 4 port boost solenoid. What’s the highest boost I can achieve with a 3lb spring? What spring rate do I need to achieve 40 psi? The turbo is a Garrett g-770 on a 2018 Honda Type R, sleeved block, forged rods and pistons, ARP +625 head studs, P&P head, full Ferrea valve train. Motec 142, port injection, ID1700

I bought a 4 ports from hondata, i connected one connection of the hondata boost controller to the k20 ecu pin B2, the other connection was connected to the ground. I was getting 12v reading in B2 SO, what is the next thing to do? Do you have some configuration you can help me so I can load using my laptop to flashpro? My car is tuned.
