Mama Cat: Perséphone (Pear). Took her in while pregnant due to a neighbour neglecting her. All black. Has thumbs. Pretty sure she's a dove.
1: Charlie aka sweet baby. All black with no thumbs. He thinks he's spiderman and climbs in the window screens. His favorite snack is wtv book I'm currently reading.
2: Clawdia (Nibbles). Black and white with a beauty mark. She has thumbs... wouldn't surprise me if she stole them. She's pure chaos but she purrs and cuddles me so it's fine.
3: Harry Houdini (Chunky). Black with a white patch on his chest. Has thumbs. If it's eatable, he will try to eat it. Unless it's dry food. He's high maintenance and only wants wet food. He's a cuddle bug. I can't even go to the bathroom alone.

I have definitely been part of that love-hate cycle you describe on the internet and I think it’s because when there’s an initial wave of love, the early reviews tend to hype up certain aspects of the book (in this case the chronic illness rep, the dragons, the military magic school), but don’t give enough context to the things people might NOT like. People get excited about those things, pick up the book, and then realize that it’s not the type of book they thought it was. And that’s where the hate and backlash comes in. I think the nature of social media makes this even worse because the reality is, extreme reviews get more engagement. The gushing reviews attract viewers looking for their next five star read. Then reality sets in that this is not exactly classic literature, and a dedicated vlog that makes clear they’re just going to hate on the book will attract viewers who also disliked the book and want to vent about it, and attract fans who want to defend it. There’s really no getting around the realities of social media and I don’t blame people whose livelihood is based on meeting the demands of algorithms for doing what will get them more engagement. I’ve just learned to change my own behavior and use book social media purely for entertainment and rely more on my own research for actually choosing what to read.

One of the first books I ever read because of booktube had this, ace of spades. Magical Vegas basically, but a lot of the hype was omg the love interest is a bi black man and I think someone's parent was non-binary or something and people liked the diversity but the book itself was awful. Representation is important but a book can't rely on that alone

I swear mates in romance novels are such a big thing because it makes it so the male love interest is so obsessed with the main character that he could never leave her or cheat on her. It’s like giving men a biological inability to hurt the women they are with romantically, which is a little sad if you think about it 🤔 Yet I fall for it every time 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

I haven't read this book yet, but I'm disappointed that the scene with Jack and the orange wasn't a setup. Yarros could have framed it as bait for Violet so that when she tries to harm him with the oranges, the whole poisoning the competition plot is exposed and she's reprimanded or forced to fight or locked up or something, presenting a new challenge that she has to face on her own or something. Imagine if actions had consequences.... This book is another classic case of missed opportunities and wasted potentials.

It's annoying when the author puts in "adult" content in their books for it to be categorized as an "adult fantasy" or whatever, when the book clearly reads as YA or even in some cases as a middle grade children's book. It seems a lot of writers and people in general are stuck at an immature mental stage but in horny adult bodies 🤷🏽‍♀️

I agree with this, absolutely. I rated it low on every front, it's super predictable, soooo much plot-convenience, the romance is cringe (and I hate YA and NA, so I expected it to be cringe to begin with), I do not like open-door spice, the magic system is mediocre, the high-level storyline is slightly better I'm curious what's gonna happen in the next book but it's really far from a good plot. I loved the dragons, absolutely loved them. And it's an enjoyable read, I finished it in 3 days! In spite of all of those shortcomings and personal preferences that I don't like. So I gave it 4 stars, because of its enjoyability. And I've been struggling through the Song of Achilles for 2 years now! And that's not a bad book, in fact I would rate it higher on all fronts, except enjoyment, clearly. Sometimes shitty fast paced books are more enjoyable than those literary heights of deep meaning, I think this was amazing for that, sometimes people just want to read a book to kill a few hours in a story, it doesn't have to be deep, it just has to be good at pulling you along for a while. This one is good at pulling you along.

I gave the first one 5⭐️, and this one honestly doesn’t even deserve 2. it‘s like the author didn’t even have an editor, the dialogue is bad, the characters in general are obnoxious, the love interests have 600 pages of miscommunication, the smut is boring. My favourite dragons are in Temeraire, there's different species who have different personalities, the big, easygoing not the smartest ones etc. And she uses them to talk about social issues, like the Russian dragons being driven by fear and greed, whereas pretty much every other dragon would die for their captain. Or equating how the dragons are treated with how the veterans are, including Wilberforce being dragged to meet the dragons for that reason Not Russians bad but this is how the serfs were treated until WW1

Also it was incredibly readable to a point it felt like a drug. But it´s written so badly and it was full of cliches. And it was obvious her brother is alive from like the half of the book. Had to wait a day to watch this video to finish my library audiobook version, which made the video so much more enjoyable to watch 😊 The narration made the romance and spicy scenes less cringy to get through, but I found them largely unnecessary and quite frankly a little boring and repetitive - which, I guess, is one of the reasons I generally don’t tend to read much romance. I also expected an adult fantasy and was surprised/disappointed to find it more YA. A 3 star read (rounded up) for me

I read this on audio and that was a huge mistake. But, I read it in almost one sitting because it was readable. Did I like it? No way - solid 2 in my opinion, but I read it and will likely pick up the 2nd one (IN PRINT!) .

if you're looking for a cool dragon, i think taran matharu's dragon rider is pretty cool. the pace is kinda slow at times tho, but the bond between men and the different beasts is really interesting and i think the bond of the mc and his dragon is the best thing about the book!

Haven't read it yet, but tbh the ENTIRE reason I'm interested in and excited for this book is EDS/POTS rep, which is rare enough, but in a traditionally published book, that's *also* getting tons of hype, I'm just thrilled! 💜

I wasn't even aware there was disability representation in the book. I've not seen it mentioned anywhere except in the comment section. (If you said something, I missed it.) But as someone who is disabled (by multiple things) I'm going to say this... Representation is a great thing... but in a well-written, well-received book that doesn't leave half the people who read it pissed off or DNFing. It's not a good look to have people justifying the reason you should read a book as being "it has X group representation". If that's the best reason for reading a book... not it's moving storyline, it's heartfelt characters that break your heart/make it leap for joy, or it's incredible way with words that bring the world to life... then, honestly... why? Disability representation deserves to be main stream... in well-written books people read because they're good, not because they're desperate to check a box on their diversity list. I haven't read the book... but I also can't help but wonder if the representation is after-thought representation or unintentional representation - meaning the author never intended to code the character the way the audience is interpreting it- (it has been in every single book I've read)... which isn't representation at all. NO ONE wants to be the token anything or a complete afterhtought. And is it actual representation or implied representation? It's high-fantasy after all. Can someone explain just how a person in a high-fantasy novel has EDS and POTS. (They're two separate conditions and you don't have to have one to have the other.) Is there discussion about compression garments and healing from injuries taking 2-3 times as long? Is there discussion about chugging salt water and getting dizzy and your heart pounding so fast for apparently no reason at all that you fall to the ground? Myriads of medical appointments? Falling short on obligations and struggling socially because you can never predict how your body will behave? I just can't see that in a book with two Mary Sues (the main female character and the golden dragon) as the lead characters.

The authors has disability herself and I think she wanted to write something in this theme from her perspective. Even people with the same disability can think or feel different. It's her POV and people who actually read can like it or not, there are plenty people who liked the book, youtube is not statistic. And she wanted to write fantasy for long time, but since she wrote only modern setting she was afraid, because everyone is so judge about fantasy genre. No wonder.

Her disability felt extremely situational. Like whenever the author wanted violet to be hurt, there it was. But there were long stretches (including the very athletic s*x scenes) where it was a complete non factor.

I read this book last month and my feelings were very similar to yours. I enjoyed parts of it but the "romance" was extremely eye rolling. It had too many tropes and definitely had a young adult feel except for the very many "f" bombs and over the top lusty moments. Over all I gave it Three stars, but I admit that was rounding up a bit. Such a shame I didn't get a dollar for every "f" bomb, I could have bought some groceries with that money. 🙂

I ended up with pretty much the exact same sentiments. Like it wasn't fantastic but like it was serviceable for what it was. I might read the second one but it really just depends on how long it is and how people are reviewing it. Fourth Wing was about 100 pages too long and I only got through it as a 3x speed audiobook. There are people who are saying they have read it multiple times and I just don't understand that. It was forgettable at best. It literally was just very standard for it's genre.

I haven’t read this book so I could be wrong, but from your descriptions, it sounds like Yarros stole huge chunks from Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern series. Dragons choosing and bonding with humans, a Choosing that can often be deadly, telepathic communication, dragon mating, and a few similarities that would be spoiler-y for Pern - yup, yup, and YUP!
