Do you ever feel like some books aren't as magical and interesting as the ones you read as a kid? I welcome you to two of my favourite middle fiction authors, Karen McManus and Jaclyn Moriarty. Karen McManus: She writes pretty awesome mystery books (usually to do with murder or a mystery death) with a subplot of romance. She has a trilogy, One of us is, and they're really interesting and would very much recommend. Her books are told from multiple perspectives of the main characters involved in the story. They're about 300 pgs each but the stories are very captivating and you won't realise how much you've read for a good long while. The chapters are 10-20 pgs on average. My two favourites are Nothing More to Tell and Two Can Keep a Secret. (Haven't read the new one, it's coming out at the end of July) Would recommend getting all of them in the same print style (mine is white bg with coloured writing) it looks all the more nicer on a bookshelf. Jaclyn Moriarty (more specifically, her kingdoms and empires series): Her kingdoms and empires books are 5 fantasy books (so far) based around tween kids living in a magical world (or sometimes, get transported to the magical world) 3 of them are centered around a singular character, and the other two centered on two characters with wildly different experiences in the story. The narrators will make you laugh while explaining their thoughts in any given distressing or magical situation, and they tend to discover or gain something magical about themselves in the end. The books are pretty long, usually 500-600 pgs, but I really love them and the chapters are fairly short. My two favourites are The Slightly Alarming Tale of the Whispering Wars and The Stolen Prince of Cloudburst. Would recommend getting them in the same hardback print, but I know that it's only the same for the aus editions with illustrations by Kelly Canby.
