What you said about Stormlight is interesting. I am a physicist and I often have a terrible time reading scifi because my brain is screaming, “Authors! Google is your friend!” I always, however, feel “safe” reading Sanderson. He doesn’t forget little things like gravity and friction. As a side note, Tress is fun because fluid dynamics can be so counterintuitive and Sanderson plays with that. Re Kristoff - I really do not understand the women who like that book. I actually need someone to explain it to me because ick!

That's actually nice to hear. I'm not a physicist but a biologist and I often want to cry a bit hearing people talk or write about anything from evolution, to genetics and immunology. It's great if an author makes the effort and can represent science well. I've never actually read Sanderson 😅.... His books seem rather long so not sure what's a good one to start is.

  • @arlissbunny

@@exomake_mehorololo The Sanderson books look long but the prose aren’t dense so the books all read fast. I started with The Final Empire, the first book in the Mistborn series, and I feel like starting there gave me a solid footing. Almost all of Sanderson’s books are set in the same universe, though not necessarily on the same planet. The Final Empire makes sense as a place to start without getting in too deep. What’s interesting about Mistborn is that you can read on from the first Mistborn era (trilogy) into the second. Mistborn era two is set on the same planet many hundreds of years later following a major geologic and climate event. It’s fascinating to see how the society has changed as a result. Mistborn era two isn’t for everyone. Sanderson has a silly sense of humor and one of two major POV characters is written to be funny. For me, Mistborn era two is my favorite because I am both interested by the science and I love these characters in particular.

Hi Liene, Way of Kings has a really cool final act but it's a very slow trudge. Also, the physical description in Way of Kings was so absent. Words of Radiance is significantly better. Way of Kings has a lot of stuff set up that doesn't get answered until even the fourth book.

Not everyone can like everything and that's ok! I used to be a HUGE Sanderson fan until I committed myself to reading his entire bibliography I realized that he is one of the most inoffensive mid authors out there today. Books with Brittany compared his books to vanilla ice cream because they can appeal to just about anyone, but it's rare they will ever do anything truly mind-blowing and I think that description sums it up perfectly. Still love stormlight, warbreaker, and the bands of mourning, but other than that no thank you

yeah, I think one of the reasons he is so popular is because his writing and his books are very accessible and that, in itself, is not a bad thing, it just so happens that while i'm easily digesting his work I'm also frustrated by what I regard as immense flaws, but one person's bug is another person's feature, to each their own

The Way of Kings was the book that finally made me realize that the cosmere franchise wasn't my jam. I don't hate it(the prologue and the climax were awesome), it's just that at the end of the day I don't think it did anything to justify it's ridiculous length. I've read books with half the page count that had just as good if not better character development, plot structure, prose and worldbuilding.

Does Allen approve your view of L&L? I remember him coming back after a break wondering what happened in his absence with that book. I have no interest in reading despite the hype. I am attempting Babel again, I had issues with characters and the way it was written. I’ve chalked it up to me not being the correct audience. I hardly see anyone talk about Dawn of Wonder. Mostly that it feels like there’s large swaths of text that don’t really contribute much of anything, and feel like they could’ve simply been cut out and we’d have a much better pace. I’m also just not getting that “masterpiece” feeling yet. I’m interested enough to keep going, but I feel like I’m waiting to see what everyone else sees. What's with all the Sanderson hate on here? I like that Sanderson writes simple so that he can bridge the gap between YA and adult fantasy. His ability to write characters like they came from a Saturday morning cartoon and create magic systems that mimic video games are also great for getting kids to read. People shouldn't be so hard on him. We all have different reading levels and he is a great next step for those moving past Dr. Seuss to something a little more sophisticated.

Sanderson is immensely popular in just about every major sff community on the internet. For sff readers who don't like his works or don't like him because of his religious affiliations, this can be grating as you can't go more than a week without encountering a video/article/post about how his books are the greatest thing since sliced bread. So every once in a while, they come to places like this and vent their frustrations which is understandable IMO. Personally I'm rather lukewarm on his works. I haven't read most of these. Way of Kings was an interesting one for me. I feel like I am a little bit of a Sanderfan, but I struggled with certain aspects. It was my first true epic fantasy read so I wasn't sure if that was part of it for me, but if I wasn't already a big fan of Sanderson, I definitely would have DNFed it after the consecutive false starts. The audio was probably what made it work for me because I would just listen to it while walking or going to visit my parents on the weekends, so it became kind of a chill episodic drama that lasted two months. I hear you on the characters though, Kalladin frustrates me more than anything and I didn't know what to make of Shallan until Words of Radiance. World building didn't bother me, but it didn't majorly impress me either. Funnily enough, a lot of his fans tend to bash Elantris, but I think that might be my favorite thing that he's written.

I don't like Brandon Sanderson's magic systems, there too weird. I always need to suspend my disbelief in order to enjoy the books. Also he's too happy, he's kind of the opposite of grim dark, good things will always happen to good people in a way that's too perfect and it losses suspense. Other than that I like his books.

I will never get the hype with Brandon Sanderson. I’ve tried nearly every book he has written and I didn’t enjoy any of them. The world building feels very simplistic, the writing feels basic and the way he writes women and religion just bores me. Legends and Lattes was so boring and I’m really not into cozy fantasy. To me cozy books just seems to mean boring. Nothing happened in the book and I started to skim.

@@LienesLibrary I don’t really know why either. I think I wanted to prove I could like his books because so many people love him and I was seeing him everywhere. I read the first two skyward books and they weren’t for me, then I read the first Mistborn trilogy and didn’t like it. Then two months later I tried Warbreaker and Elantris after seeing people talk about them. I didn’t like them either. Then in December I DNF’d The Way of Kings. I guess I'm also on the dark side because I cannot stand Stormlight Archive. The world building makes no sense, it's just dumb. So dumb. Sanderson doesn't understand how humans work socially or historically. The characters do nothing for me. His romantic relationship are honeslty so cringe, they come from no development, they just are. And his prose is very straight to the point and has no depth. (And of course, it could have been much shorter.) And let me tell you, I am in stem and I got NOTHING related to physics out of this book. If anything, Sanderson's works are very religious imo. I did like Mistborn, though now that I look back I didn't really love the third book. I don't know what it is that people fall head over heels over with his books. Some are good. I feel Sanderson's world-building is basically a copy and paste of the Civilization games. He himself admitted to be addicted to those games and it clearly shows in this books: the trade routes, the religion VS science VS culture, the smaller civilizations to push around, etc.
