This is the way I was trained when I was an apprentice almost 40 years ago but we did not use PVA glue it was rabbit glue and hoof glue, I still have the blank books I made as well as some of the paperback books I converted to hardbacks as class projects. I was only one of the two females in a class of 40 boys back in the day, not many young ladies bake then had ever considered bookbinding as a career choice. It is something I am for ever grateful to have been able to of learned and a boss who thought I had the potential to excel at, because without him sponsoring me I would never of been able to of study bookbinding.

Two questions: Was this a class that was offered during the high school years? Also, which glue is better for long-term and HEAVY book usage (i.e., frequently studied reference manuals, daily devotions, etc.)?

I visited a graphic school in Germany a while ago which had a bookbinding course. Some of the books the students made were insane. It's such an underrated craft
A long time ago I learned bookbinding on a technical school. After a course of four years you got a diploma and then you could be an apprentice who has to learn the real craft. To see an artisan like this man at work? Sheer joy and pleasure. And, after all these years? My hands are starting to itch. Thanks for this beautiful demonstration of advanced bookbinding.

I'm about to get started on making my first book with a rounded spine, and I worried about how I would round the spine with only limited equipment. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I saw you just smacking the book against the table with a hammer.

Really, other than the plough there’s ways to work around most all bookbinding equipment. . Don’t have a press? Use a pile of weights. Don’t have a sewing frame or cradle? use a chair back or buy an old picture frame. Planing the page edges is more problematic, and a book plough really does do the best job, but failing that, a vice and some sandpaper can do a reasonable job. As for rounding a spine, how else would you do it, other than “gently” hitting it with a mallet/hammer?

Oh my gosh. When you tugged the leather down over the side notches and it stretched over them and looked like the beauty of books I love I lost it

I came to this video because of a rabbit hole that started somewhere else, and suddenly I’ve just watched this entire video and loved every second of it. Beautiful craftsmanship. I am blown away.
i think this is the only time i have been suggested a video by youtube that was relevant to what i was watching, this pooped up after watching a book being refurbished on the insider channel. wow i have no words that is incredible. i makes my heart warm that there are still people who know this crafts/artistry.
Good. Lord. My friend. The Lord is Good. Thats a 650$ journal. I’m a bit of a historian and have always preferred editions like this, and had never imagined they could be made without machines. But this is the original way, and it’s possible for me to learn. I imagine you yourself are using this knowledge as something that was passed down to you, from the beginning of the time when civilization learned this. Thats very cool you practice your traditions if that’s the case. Wonderful video. Inspiring. It was precisely what I wanted to find when I searched how to bind books and was not finding any leather ones with the side notches, the way my favorite publishers have them made. Places like Anathema, Ouroboros, Scarlet Imprint, and many more utterly beautiful companies.
I have so much respect for this man. And to understand how much goes into making a hand crafted journal really changes perspective on paper use.
У Вас золотые руки , очень красивая работа!!!
God. This is what I wish I could do. An art an old and noble as bookbinding. It's an art in and of itself.
I’ve worked in the professional printing and bindery trade since 1990 and it still amazes me seeing it done the traditional way as opposed to the large scale that I’m accustomed to!
It's really a melody to watch these skillful hands in this video. Also it's good to know that there are people still keep this ancient art. Congratulation to this guy!
