If you're interested in the 'romantic' aspect that the musical adaptation took up, then I highly recommend Susan Kay's 'Phantom'. It is essentially published fanfiction, hehe, but it's bloody well-written and a favourite within the Phantom fandom (or phandom, if you will, hehe) I appreciate and enjoy Leroux's novel on an entirely different plane than I do the musical, but it's still a great classic in it's own right.

It's weird. As I've gotten older, I like when the book and the film adaptations are different from each other. It just means you have more ways to love the story. You should check out the 1925 silent film version - which is arguably the closest translation to the book (the ending however...) Great review!

The musical is fantastic! The book is very different and greatly divides opinion, some absolutely hate it and some love it - but I think if you love the musical, reading the novel is something that will add another layer (if that even makes sense... It does in my head)

Have you tried Phantom by Susan Kay. It's the Phantoms backstory and its real dark but it's has such depth to Eriks past and the pain that he goes through. I can't put it down.

Susan Kay's novel also gives credit and attention the character of the Persian, which is nice.

I love the musical, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to read the novel. But I had no idea it was so different, so I may try it out :)

I feel like Christine never gave Erik a chance. He would murder for her, so don't you think he could reverse that too? If Christine said," I will stay with you if you stopped killing people." I do believe he would stop. He was never taught what was right and what was wrong when he was a child cause his parents abandoned him. If Christine would just give him a chance and show him what's right he would have changed.

JulietteMarie I think we'll have to disagree here. I don't think I'd give someone who abducts me a chance. Women shouldn't have to 'fix' men & teach them how to live their life. Manic pixie dream girl all over again - pretty dangerous ideology tbh!

I also have to disagree. At least for the book version of Erik, he was pretty insane and violent. He was a murderer way before meeting Christine, invented a torture device and used it on people, and became violent whenever someone didn't do what he wanted. When Christine ripped his mask off, he literally dragged her across the floor by her hair because he was so angry with her. He MIGHT have changed for Christine, but I highly doubt it. In real life, when women try to "fix" their violent lovers, it doesn't usually work. Plus, he straight up tricked and kidnapped her. Not a very healthy relationship at all, hahaha.

If it was book Erik I probably wouldn't give him a chance but if it was the musical adaptation or the Charles Dance one I would. Book Erik is too disturbed.

Erik wasn't abandoned, he ran away from his mother. And while we are meant to sympathise with him because of his past, it doesn't justify or excuse his actions. Another thing to remember is that Christine pitied him, but she never loved him.

Erik pretty much knew that what he did was wrong. What he did to Raoul's brother when he acted like the siren, and then played a Requiem for him is an example.

I don't remember why, but I was looking at this in the bookstore the other day. This video makes me wish I would have picked it up! I, too, only know about this story from the play and the film, but your description of the book still has me interested! Great review :).

I think because I knew really nothing about the actual plot of the novel, I just didn't know what was going to happen - but I guess the mystery around Erik was pretty obvious but the last couple of chapters of the novel I didn't know what would happen to Erik.

I love this story in all its forms but I sadly just found out that my copy of the book is the most common translation that is abridged 😞. Do you know who translated your copy? (Sorry I'm so late in asking)

Amazing review!!! By the way, have you watched The Phantom of the Opera silent film from 1925? Lon Chaney does an absolutely wonderful job portraying Erik and the film is my favorite cinema adaption of the story.

I thought the Lloyd Webber film directed by Joel Schumacher was certainly very stylish and had obviously gone for the romantic aspect in a big way with a distinctly young cast. My favourite character by far was Carlotta as played by Minnie Driver. Probably because she appealed to my preference for the overtly theatrical and in this instance, her's was a characterisation clearly interpreted with relish by the actress herself. An uninhibited performance I thoroughly loved!

As much i like the story, even I'll admit that the writing is a bit pulpy and the characters aren't that well written. The ALW version was kind of his autobiography about his relationship with Sarah Brightman.
