Book Review of You're Not Listening by Kate Murphy

It's that time again where I review books I've been reading. This time it's a non-fiction book called You're Not Listening by Kate Murphy.
Although I did this review late on a Friday afternoon - early evening - which I have to say, is my "wine time", I was on the second glass of a nice Sav Blanc when I turned the camera on to record (not recommended) and found out that for whatever reason, the audio wasn't picking up so I had to wear my chunky Logitech headphones (no, not a sponsored post - all of the gear I use is paid out of my own pocket).
Well anyway, with wine in hand and headphones on my head, I thought, "It can't get any worse than that. My review should make up for it and I'll pretend to look as professional as I can be."
Little did I realise I was rambling about a personal story rather than an in-depth review of the book. That's because the wine was talking and no one really was listening (see what I did there?)
The book made me realise how much of a shocker of a listener I am (especially to my husband who must have a voice range that doesn't get picked up by my aural sensors). There were some eye opening statements that made me reflect how I can radically improve my listening and in so doing, improve my relationships with people.
I would definitely recommend this book which is filled with lots of interviews with people who are excellent listeners.
I've decided frankly, the world needs to shut up and listen.
I'll make a start here.

I highly recommend this book. A highly valuable and underrated life skill - listening. Please be inclusive and add captions to this review. "Listening" is really about taking the time to learn about someone else.

Thank you so much for your feedback and comment. You are absolutely right about the captioning. I’ll investigate to see how I can do this for future videos.

Great Review! Nice to get another take on this book! I just finished it and got alot of value from it. I actually checked my hearing in a clinic after reading this book. Unfortunately, they found some issues. But Im glad I got to the root of listening and found this (if you dont hear well, you will have a harder time to listen). Good stuff!

Good point! I’ve been through a couple of those hearing tests where you press a button when you hear that sound as it gets softer or louder. Of course my husband is convinced I never listen to him. 🤣 (I say that he has a specific pitch that I cannot pick up🤣🤣🤣). He’s not amused.

@@LifeLessonsFromBooks haha! I also tested me because my wife kept asking “can you hear me? Are you listening?!”. But now that I know I have damaged hearing I can ignore her as when I want and blame it on my bad hearing! I start to understand why “playing the victim” is such a attractive proposition. It gives you superpowers! 😀

Perhaps shutting up and listening is the skill to stop hate in it's tracks. I just picked up this book at the library, and I a licensed counselor so I'm eager to read it!

I have read this book. I recommend it. Not sure this review did the book justice. This is a Malcolm Gladwell type book in that it is a combination of research studies, personal stories and interviews.

Thanks for listening and watching Linda, much appreciated. To be fair, I did joke around during this review so it's a fair comment to make. Yes, I'd recommend this book too. It was an eye opener in the sense that it did make me think about how I am around others and how I need to be listening more actively.

Thank you, Helen! In Romania we never listened 🤣🤭 so no surprise we are still behind. It is hard to listen without distortion. Sapere aude!🤗🥂

Thank you Ioana. I appreciate you sharing your experience. I come from a Greek background. I can tell you that we definitely don’t listen as much as we could when it’s best to yell over everyone. 🤣🥂
