Book Production From Start To Finish, Digital Printing and Binding Perfect Bound Books

For pricing check out www.justaprinter.com This is the step by step process that I use to manufacture perfect bound books in my print shop. Starting from Adobe Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop we output a PDF and open it in Acrobat. There I impose the book either two up, four up or six up using PDF Snake imposition software. After that I send the imposed file to the appropriate printing press. Covers get laminated on one side before proceeding to the CP Bourg 3002 perfect binder. There is where the covers get glued to the book block. Finally a quick trip through the Challenge CMT 330 three knife trimmer and the books are finished. It's that easy! Thanks for watching.

Writing is who I am and I'm good at it like fast good but I am always fascinated how stuff actually works. Behind the scenes. Other videos say 'this is what happens when we make book but it's either not as in depth or they start with the 2nd to last step. You cover it all. New respect for what goes on on your end. Authors wouldn't be able to be them without peeps like you so major props. Keep it up!!

Typesetting was done by a specially trained operator, page make up done by someone wielding an Xacto blade. Nice shop and set up. @@kontoname typography is supposed to follow lots of rules and comic sans pretty much followed none (the letters spacing is absolutely terrible, see for exemple "fingers" how you almost read "f inger s" that's not a layout error, that's comic sans) to understand the hate we also have to understand the context, back when it was an overly used font. imagine opening the annual report of a company with this font on every title because "hey, its almost handwritten". comic sans is not that bad if you compare it to the pile of shit you can find on dafont nowadays but back in the days it was one of the most terrible font and it was on every computers, in every office!! A "corrected" version of comic sans exists and i think its called comic sans neue and well yeah it still look ugly hahaha

Depends if you buy used or new. Would be tens of thousands for used and hundreds of thousands for new.

Hello Dan, very nice operation and very educational videos! I've been in various digital printer technical sales support positions for years, currently with Ricoh Production, and have seen a lot of print shops both huge and small, and I admire your efficiency and smart use of tech.

I noticed the Whittier Mailing Products box. Same company I get my tabs and address imprinter ink cartridges from. Great explanation breaking down the operation of the binder and 3 knife. Long long ago the company I worked at printed books for Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard and the binder ran PUR lay flat.pretty amazing back in the 90’s

Yes, I might need to consider a PUR machine in the future, that stuff seems like it would be a good fit if the numbers make sense.

Pretty nice setup! I have only a half dozen years experience with the digital approach to bookbinding and about 30 years in commercial print and bindery( World Color, Quebecor, Quad, Transcontinental). I have only had about a years experience with a Bourg/Challenge setup and I have to say they are pretty user friendly. The place I worked for was only using the PUR glue and I hated it. I could never get consistant results from job to job. I have always used hot melt glues and had much better results. Not to mention the the maintenance and attention that was needed for the PUR was so time consuming. I loved the Challenge trimmer because as a commercial printer all my trimmer setups and adjustments were made manually while digital adjustments are so simple. I have to say your knowledge of paper weight, grain, coating is very good as I have worked with so many people who are running digital printers and have no idea what they are doing and don't understand grains and what leads to cracking. As a life long bindery guy, I'd follow you any day!

Thanks Dave, glad to hear that. I was interested to hear your input about PUR machines. I feel like I should consider adding PUR but I am hesitant because of the cleaning as you mentioned. EVA sure is simple.

I used to service the same Konica 5500 or 6500 print engine before I retired. I loved those systems, very tech-friendly. The blue engine looks like a Konica 8000, I retired just as Konica was releasing them to the US. I also serviced Canon 7000 systems.
