Impressed you’ve done all the research so we don’t have to! I always listen with interest when I hear a shortlist/Longlist or winner has been announced even if I don’t necessarily read any of them. I like the way they bring books onto my radar though. I think I’d like to look into more prizes that are for a specific genre. Before I was really into literary fiction, I think the only prize I knew about was The CWA Daggers. I’m interested in hearing about the Arthur C Clarke as well. This was a very comprehensive list though. And who doesn’t want to read a nice miserable and completely horrible book?! 😂

Wow!! Best video ever--well not ever but so far on BookTube. Almost all my personal favorites mentioned and many I plan to follow. Would love to have seen the Hugo (sci-fi) and a prize for crime literature and The BookTube prize deserves at least a mention. I read a lot of Audio and this category really deserves another prize other than the Audies which I've never found to represent many of the books I've really found great in my listening. Thank you for all your hard work. I plan to watch again with pen and paper in hand so I can a favorites list. Pat yourself on the back since I can't do it for you.

I am a sucker for a good prize list. I always have a look into the shortlist and winner of the International Prize for Literature announced by the House of Cultures of the World in Berlin/Germany. A list I am also following, which is not an actual prize, is the yearly Readers of Europe announcement. Every year the permanent representations to the EU are each invited to recommend a book to read. The theme for 2023's campaign was ‘female authors’, the idea being that each permanent representation would select a book by a female author from their country. Not all of the books are available in a German or English translation of course, but it is always fun to check or at least read about what kind of book has been chosen to represent each individual country.

It's great to see a lot of the literary prizes in one video. I follow a couple of other Australian ones. A recent one that I've really liked is the Voss Literary Prize (I think the judges are usually academics from Aus Unis) it started in 2014. Robbie Arnott won it with Limberlost in Nov 2023. It's fun following the Australian Book Industry Awards and because I'm in Canberra, The Chief Minister's Awards. The Ned Kelly Award for Crime writing is quite fun too. Oh and The Readings Award (Readings bookshop has always has something interesting on their lists) and The Aurealis Award for Speculative Fiction is sometimes really interesting. Hardly need leave the country, lol

And the African prizes sounds interesting, I always want to expand my reading more. Goldsmith sounds interest although I'd have to see if it's a love it situation for me haha. Agree that Jhalak Prize is the superior prize 👏🏾 And their childrens one is pretty great too. I also really like the womens prize, as I tend to enjoy the winner book at the very list. As a big nonfiction memoir reading (and occasionally "hard nonfiction" that isn't self-helpy) I am very curious to see what they do with that list. But otherwise most go over my head. I hear of nero and also lambda quite a bit though, and sometimes take a peek at the list. The only list I've actually started to properly avoid is booker 👀

Im super interested in the Women’s Prize for Non Fiction! Since I dont usually read non fic and am never up to date with new non fiction releases, this award will be a great way for me to find things that i’ve never heard of, and expand my reading taste. My only prediction for this award at the moment would be Doppelganger by Naomi Klein since it had an overwhelmingly positive reception last year

There are lots of cool prizes here, but why is it so English-centric? Only a few allowed translated literature and none of the prizes devoted to another language besides English or books written in a country where English is not the primary language got listed. I understand the issue might be that many of the books in question would not have been translated for an English-speaking audience by the time the prize is announced, but that wouldn't stop people from going back and looking into older winners who might have translations, not to mention the people here who might know another language anyway. And I feel like if non English-centric literary prizes were discussed more in the booktube community, it might encourage translations to become available earlier.

Are you deleting them or is it just a problem with the computer? The second time I knew the reply showed up but when I checked the next day it wasn't there. Do you know why this is happening? Are you deleting it or is it the KZread algorithm, and is it something about what I wrote or just a computer problem? I'm getting really frustrated about spending a long time listing them only for the comment to disappear.

@@GunpowderFictionPlot Ok well since KZread insists on not letting me post a full list of prizes, I will tell you that you can find a big list on Wikipedia on "list of literary awards". And a big dream of mine is to see a book tuber cover one of these prizes, I understand the issue of some of the books not getting translations but I think the reason they don't sometimes get translations is BECAUSE no Anglophone people seem to be interested in these prizes, and if the interest was there the translations would come (and there are some prizes where being translated is part of the reward). If it won't let me do it in a comment, I would be so grateful if you could do a video going over some of the non-English prizes to introduce them to other people on KZread.
