Boogies Trains on: The Wirral Railway - 3 February, 2024

A look at parts of the Merseyrail Wirral Line that were originally part of the Wirral Railway. Unlike the Mersey Railway, the Wirral Railway was included in the 1922 grouping and became part of the LMS. It was not electrified until 1938 and many of us fondly remember the LMS electric units, some of which remained in service until 1985.
The line was then operated by class 508 units, which later became part of a common pool with the class 507 units from the Southport line. By the date of this visit all of the 508s had been withdrawn and the service was being operated by some remaining 507s and the new Stadler class 777s.

3:10 just like SWR have done with one of their 455s. Wonder if for both the units painted into the old livery will be used for farewell rail tours

I think that the Seacombe branch services were operated by the GC/LNER and not the Wirral Railway.

Hi. I've checked back to my reference sources. The Seacombe branch was part of the Wirral Railway, however the bulk of the traffic on the line was freight which was operated by other railways. Birkenhead docks had an extensive network of lines some of which were accessible via the Wirral Railway. Included in the network were goods stations operated by the CLC and GC. There was also a short section of CLC owned track. Jowett, plate 58A, is the clearest map I have. The Ian Allan pre-grouping atlas is at too small a scale.

The Class 507 just like the Class 508 will be missed entirely as more Class 777s have entered service. What do you think of the new Class 777.

They do the job. I'm used to the LO class 378s so they were quite familiar. The ride on the 507s is wonderfully retro.
