If you're defense doesn't impact winning in the regular season, you can't be the DPotY. Period. Quit saying it's an individual award because it is not that simple. The scoring title is a simple award because it's strictly based on numbers. MVP and DPotY are both awards based off the interpritation of numbers and and other nuances. Just as the MVP can't go to a player where winning hasn't been a factor, same goes where a DPotY needs to prove that that players' defense actually makes an impact. The addition of Gobert gave the Wolves defense a noticable jump. It's more than his individual numbers. It's his leadership on that side of the ball. It's his presence in the paint that allows McDanials, Ant, NAW, Conley and even Reid and Kat to go ham on that side of the court. It's those factors that made Rudy the best defender in the league this year. I fully expect Wemby to fully eclipse his his French predecessor, but it hasn't happened yet. And on top of it all, recent history proves these two fellers wrong. Gobert did impact this series vs the Nuggets, and while he did get cooked by an all time great, just like all the notable DPotY of the past were prone to be, there were at least 4 games in this series where Gobert helped the wolves take the edge and come out victorious. It's true that the wolves needed all 21 feet of their big men to win this game, but it's also true that Gobert, by the mouth of the team and the coach, was the one who brought the defense first culture to this franchise. A culture that is their identity as a team, a culture that defeated the defending champs.

When Gobert won the award, I said that they gave it to him and people came at me like I didn't know what I was talking about. Thanks Jokic for making my point for me.

Wouldn’t it just be because in today’s era we have great rim protectors who also can play great defense from outside the paint? i.e. AD & Wemby offer the same rim protection but can guard perimeter, P&R, switches, etc etc. Gobert is just elite at defensive around the rim, and even then even some Wolves fans question his effort when sometimes he just chooses not to jump or contest some layups from time to time.

i get what they're saying, but they're comparing his regular season/playoff performance for an award that is based off the regular season. what you do in the playoffs has no bearing on a regular season award, they're two entirely different seasons for a reason. embiid won mvp last year based off his body of work in the regular season, even though he averaged 10 less ppg in the post season and disappeared. with that thinking, do we now have to discredit other award winners? just doesn't make sense to conflate the two seasons.

DPOY is a regular season award and rudy does help you win regular season games verse mediocre teams and bad teams which will make your over all defensive rating look better and you will have a better over all record that's why I dont pay attention to stats I watch how teams and players play against other great teams and players to rate how good they are

Watch how many guards and forwards dribble through under the hoop or shoot dumb floaters and pull ups to avoid Rudy. I’m not a huge Rudy guy but to say he doesn’t change the approach is just saying you’re not watching the games.

i think rudy is a great great defender and deserved all dpoy awards, but he can also be countered easily. especially playoffs where all things is magnified. because he has strength and weakness defensively. and with how much offensive talent we have in NBA its easily countered if youre not a versatile defender like AD or Giannis that you can move your feet. but he has strenght for sure and deserve the awards

(40-58 Denver up) Rudy was subbed at the 5 minute mark with the score 53-59 Denver. That's a 15-1 run with Rudy on the court (+14). He then came back at the start of the 4th. with the score 66-67 Denver and left at the 2:05 minute mark with his 6th foul and the score was 92-82 Minnesota. 26-15 run with Rudy on the court (+11). Stop listening to bozos and watch the games, it's not that hard.

Rudy gobert is overrated. He was pissing me off in the entire series. If this aged like shit, then gobert would’ve been the one guarding jokic in big moments rather than having KAT and NAZ doing his job

Gobert is a help side defender he no guarding nobody straght up..i never seen a helpside defender get that amount of love.

So with KG winning DPOTY and MVP he should get more props, guy had game and was a dog 100% he doesnt get enough respect and mention from everybody its a shame.

If Rudy Gobert was a U.S player there were so much respect on him. Dikembe Mutombo 4 time DPOY ? yes and he played Shaq in his prime in 2001 final : Shaq's stats ? ... 33pts 16reb 5ast 3.5blocks !!! When you play one of the best player all time in his prime you can't do anything individualy ? Can you understand that. Rondo was one of the most intelligent player in the court but his hate against rudy blind him its just so sad.

Y’all say this aged bad, but I think it still holds true. Rudy stepped up in the 3rs and 4th of g7 by making big energy plays, mostly on the offensive end. Sure he got a couple of blocks that game, but if we talk about the series overall, Rudy couldn’t gaurd jokic, plain and simple. Whenever the nuggets needed a bucket they swung it to jok in the post and he pieced Rudy up with great effiency. Put wemby in Rudy’s position and the wolves would’ve won in 5. Not to mention that Rudy’s soft as hell
