Bonsaify | Composing a Zelkova Bonsai Forest: Eric Goes BIG!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Follow along as Eric builds his largest Zelkova forest yet!
00:00:35 Preparing a large tray with a grid of bamboo.
00:00:57 Prepping trees by taking out of pots, cutting off large roots, and reducing root balls.
00:01:25 Thinking about composition to build the forest. Eric starts with the largest trees.
00:03:07 Eric places the large trees!
00:04:04 2 pairs of large trees are anchored in.
04:04:46 Adding smaller clumps of trees around the main trees.
00:05:24 Moving to back section of composition, looking at position of negative space and creating a perception of depth.
00:07:53 Adding smaller trees for more sense of scale.
00:09:56 Adding tiny / bare root clumps for look of young trees in the forest.
00:11:04 Last step - pruning branches that are too long, too big, or crossing.
00:12:19 Purpose of lots of wire on trees.

    Thats a fantastic composition and a great video. I'd love to see how this develops over the next few years - please keep us posted. Group plantings are so much harder than people realise and I like how much effort you went to before and during the video to help get it right - it really paid off!

    I love the forced perspective in the central "path" area, you did a great job! Can't wait to see it in leaf, I bet it'll be stunning.

    I love the idea of combining two or three trees together before planting them. That’s something I would have never considered before.

    Fantastic creation - so much patience has gone into this project! Like magic seeing the individual trees come together to form a completely different picture. How will you manage the bamboo/wire scaffolding in the future?

    The bamboo will rot away, and I will remove the wire bit by bit. The roots will hold it as a single piece after a few years growth.

    Thanks for this! I just bought five from you last week and I’m hoping to make my own tiny little grouping. Absolute absolute beginner here. I’m actually a potter so at least I have some containers.😊 I have no green house so I’m keeping them indoors for a few months. Seems okay, right?

    First of all it looks amazing. Second, are you not worried at all about sap from those cuts? My zelkova over here in oakland are leaking sap some cuts

  • @Bonsaify

    I've never seen a Zelkova ooze sap - But when you do both the top cuts and bottom cuts at the same time this doesn't happen as much. I've seen that more on maples.

    Great forest! Should we do this to maples in the dead of winter or before buds break does it matter? And whats the best way to incorperate hills into a forest? Muck up a hill then plant tree then bonsai soil on top? Thanks

  • @Bonsaify

    @Bonsaify

    5 ай бұрын

    Maples - I think you could do it earlier in winter - but standard aftercare for repotted material would be required - e.g. a heat mat/bed on the roots and keeping the top around 40F should keep it dormant. But repotting time is always the safest time for this type of operation. As for hills - I would encourage you and others to incorporate stones - maybe I'll do a big "hilly" forest in the near future.

    @@Bonsaify thanks alot. Would love to see how hills are done. Not too many yt videos on creating hills with forests. Ive tried them but what a waste of bonsai soil piling it up high just to make a hill and then have the soil just run down the hill. I fig maybe muck up a hill to not waste too much bonsai soil. Thanks for the info as always

    the forest is one of the most difficult creations to make. How much time did it take you to place all the trees?🤣 Always nice work man 😉

    Hey Eric, just a quick question. You seem to add trees wired together in pairs of clumps rather than as individuals? is that in order to maintain location or are you thinking ahead to nebari development?

  • @Bonsaify

    @Bonsaify

    5 ай бұрын

    I don't prioritize nebari for forests. Although this forest may have a good future on that front since all the trees were cuttings and seem to be developing nicer nebari than I expected. As for the pairs, 3's and 4's - I use this technique to simultaneously make it easier to anchor the trees and to reinforce the irregularity of spacing. The most common pitfall I see in forest creation is having spacing that is too regular. The second most common is having too little differentiation of sizes in the trees. Wiring a pair allows you to focus on filling in the canopy while automatically making spacing irregular. The clumps contain trees that are almost touching in many cases, while each clump has to be spaced a bit further from the other clumps. I also find that having a pre-formed clump allows for ideal trunk relationships within that unit.

    Thankyou for explaining, that's a really great technique. Avoiding regularity is a challenge! Love the videos!
