Фильм және анимация

Bonanza - Episode 60 - The Rival - Hoss is riding back from his sweetheart Cameo's house when he comes up on a group of men that have just killed a young couple.
The Rival
Director: Robert Altman
Writer: Anthony Lawrence
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 15 April 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Despite irrefutable evidence which places Jim Applegate (Charles Aidman) at the scene of a lynching, Hoss Cartwright doesn't reveal this information to Sheriff Coffee. It is not friendship or loyalty which motivates Hoss' silence: Both he and Jim are in love with Cameo Johnson (Peggy Ann Garner), and Hoss does not want to be accused of falsely besmirching his romantic rival. Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"Two friends, Jim Applegate and Hoss, are competing with each other to be the sweetheart of lovely Cameo Johnson. One evening when Hoss is riding back from Cameo's house, he sees a group of men that has just lynched a young couple. Hoss recognizes one of the riders as his friend Jim Applegate.
Applegate is arrested when one member of the gang tells the Sheriff that that Applegate was with him. When Hoss and Cameo go to see Applegate in jail, he tells them that he was not involved with the killing but has just rode up on the men while returning home. Now Hoss has a very difficult dilemma. If he tells the sheriff it will look like Hoss wanted Applegate out of the way to get to Cameo. If Applegate is telling the truth then Hoss's statement can only do damage to his friend. Hoss is torn on what is to be done.
In this typical Hoss theme show, we have the big lovable character in the middle between loyalty to his friend and honesty of his inner-self. Hoss wants so much to believe his friend but feels like his integrity is at stake if he does not reveal what he saw that evening. Plus, just as his character will do so many times, he does not want to hurt a women that has shown him some emotion even if the woman really does not care for him. This episode is one reason that the public fell in love with Hoss Cartwright." Written by fko9494 on IMDb.com
"Some people in the Virginia City region are angry at the amount of cattle rustling that's going on and have formed a vigilance committee. The show opens up with a group of these hooded night riders executing a young couple. Unfortunately for them they are seen by two people. One of them is the brother of the deceased husband and the other is Hoss Cartwright who sees a group of men riding and they could be the night riders. But one of them Hoss's friend Charles Aidman and the two are rivals for 40s child star Peggy Ann Garner.
Dan Blocker does some of his best acting in the series as a man who is torn between loyalty to his friend and wanting to be a good citizen. Garner is in this equation in a way that even she doesn't figure.
Very nice story with good guest star turns from Garner and Aidman." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

I think this episode was a zenith of sorts for Hoss. No matter how angry he got, or how hurt he was, he still couldn't stand by and watch a man die without trying to help. That image...of Hoss, struggling to support the man's weight, even with other men trying to force him to let go...even after being shot...is about as heroic and as noble as anything ever seen on a tv set.

Between 3:25 and 4:08, Dan Blocker does a brilliant job of expressing bashfulness by nervously fidgeting with his hat. It's a masterful piece of acting that should be studied in acting classes throughout the world.

Loved this episode. Hoss all the way. He was hilarious they way he was jawwing Joe. "Too cheap to go out to town and buy bullets. You can hang on to a dollar longer than anyone I know". The below belt wit is so unlike Hoss and that makes it even more hilarious. And good to see how he dealt with the conflicts in his mind. Sure wish he got in with Cameo though.

@@andrewturk6562 I think Leon means these kinds of events are common and routine in the lives of the Cartwrights. Every time one of the Cartwrights gets seriously romantically involved with a chick, the chick ends up dying from an accident or a murder, or just plain sickness. And every time Sheriff Coffee catches a prisoner, the prisoner or one of his accomplices hits him in the head and knocks him out. Sheriff Coffee has let untold umbers of prisoners escape from his jail. It's really a scandal. Congress should hold hearings about it.

This was a very illuminating episode, not only was Hoss right about his pathetic friend he was right about the girl as well. And yes she lived however she also is gone, in a different sort of fashion. The writers are very creative, amazing how many different creative features these writers invent coming from an older western drama, irony, tension, slap stick violence, love, hate, confession, and finding the truth about a person at his, or her dying moments.

How did Jim Applegate die at the end? He was talking while he hung. That means he could breath. You cant talk unless you breath o the exhale. For jim to die from hanging he would have poassed out from no air before he died, not talk until he died! Good on Hoss for dropping that chick at the end.

i didnt quite get the ending. why would the vigilantes rush in to try and save the man they were hanging ? and why would they shoot the brother ? the brother only told the truth, which if anything, would have made applegate look even more guilty

That was possibly the stupidest ending ever. Why when seconds before he'd been so mad at him for lynching his brother he was willing to lose everything just to see him hung a little sooner, why all of the sudden would he risk his life to SAVE him? And all the other guys there why would they risk their life to save him, and why would the guy just stand there and let them slowly pick up a gun and shoot him? These Bonanza endings so often seem to involve mass temporary insanity as a plot convenience, but this one really takes the cake.
