Bonanza - The Ride | Episode 84 | Old Western Series | Classic | Full Length

Фильм және анимация

Bonanza - Episode 84 - The Ride - When Adam is a witness to a murderous armed robbery by masked assailants, he is absolutely convinced he knows who one of them is, but there's ultimately only one way to prove it.
The Ride
Director: Don McDougall
Writer: Ward Hawkins
Stars: Michael Landon, Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 21 January 1962 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
The hooded man who robbed and killed the manager of the Goat Springs bank line turns out to be Adam Cartwright's longtime friend Bill Enders (Jan Merlin). Even though Adam is certain that he saw Bill at the scene of the murder, another witness claims that Bill was 90 miles away when the crime occurred. Unsatisfied with this testimony, Adam takes it upon himself to prove (or perhaps disprove) that Bill could have ridden the 180-mile distance in and out of town in time to commit the murder. Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"I'm sorry, but of all the Cartwright boys, I cannot stand Adam. I think he's very arrogant and stuck up. He sees himself as smarter than his father and brothers. That's probably why this episode just got on my nerves. I think I would have enjoyed this episode a lot more if Adam hadn't been the character chosen (though I suppose he was the best Cartwright for this episode). I kept hoping that Adam was wrong...
The fact that the Pony Express rider didn't make it back on time still wasn't good enough for cocky big brother. He decided to do it himself. After all, we know that Adam's the best at everything!!!
If you don't see Adam's personality the same as I do, you may enjoy this episode a lot more...
The beginning of that was cute, but even that was ruined..." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

ackie? Pernell Roberts is my favorite actor. In my top 5 best actors ever, he is #1. I know many women friends that fawn over this incredible actor. Many of the most widely acclaimed actors often are very good but I can binge watch Adam Cartright when I have time. One lady friend of mine said besides Pernell's great acting ability he also has the stunning looks, his very walk and manner he does anything...that adds to his performance. Like you I, and a number of my friends quit watching after he left the show. I wish he would have had another good western where he starred or maybe a crime drama...but he personified the western actor.

I hadn't thought this way when watching Bonanza as a new series but now when I enjoy the way the four Cartwrights rode their horses to a stop Adam just didn't look like he was enjoying it. His expression seemed to loom as though he wondered what he was doing there. I was disappointed but not surprised when he quit the show and while I missed Adam, I still enjoyed the show until it was canceled.

Fabulous opening scene where a companionable exchange between Adam and Toby is soon shattered. Stellar performance from Roberts in this episode. Brilliant portrayal throughout of the tension in holding to one's conviction against unbelieveable odds....even to the obvious tension evidenced in Robert's cheek and jaw in the one bar room scene where his back was to Bill Anders and also in the exchange at home between father and son where Adam admitted the temptation to take the easy way. And then that scene immediately after in his meeting with Mary where her approach to Adam re-galvanized his conviction of her husband's guilt. Great scripting and stunning acting by all the major players.

I enjoy this episode, but as time has gone on I do find the crux of it to be a little weird. Like, there is literally nothing to suggest that Adam could possibly have recognised the guy who did the shooting...and yet he keeps claiming he just knows, without explaining why. I know the episode needed him to be right, and not able to prove it, but like it's a bit silly they didn't write in some small way, or detail, that Adam had actually recognised him lol

I love the conversation Ben and Adam have in the middle (22:24) it shows what a deep father-son connect they have. This is not the first time Adam has confided in his father and he is confidant that Ben will always back him up. Ben can see the man that his son has become but I think he's still secretly glad that his oldest, stoic son can still come to him when he needs help.

@@moray4776 It's about who is faster and more accurate. If someone saw you start to draw, they have a 1/4 to 1/2 second disadvantage because of their reaction time, but if their draw to first shot is 1 second faster, then they can win. Someone who is fast but misses has lost their advantage. Accuracy counts. However, these deliberate “fair fight” quick draw gunfights purely a Hollywood creation. In real life, it is important to know how fast your draw is because if a person had a gun drawn on you but turns their head or body, you may have time to draw before they can turn their head/body back to shoot you. So you need to know how fast your draw is and what situations give you enough time to hit the bad guy.

I feel the same way. It's not the same without Adam. They don't even talk about him in the later episodes. Why couldn't they have let Pernell come back Part time...as he wanted.

👍👌👏 Definitely not easy to hold on what one knows respectively whitnessed. Especially not with so much pressure against one. Thanks a lot for uploading and sharing this old series. Best regards luck and health.
