Free Western Series: Bonanza - Episode 151 - Alias Joe Cartwright - A stubborn, career army sergeant appears to be his only hope when Little Joe is arrested after being robbed and knocked unconscious by a look-a-like escaped army prisoner and is unable to convince the fort commander that he isn't the man who has been sentenced to face the firing squad.
Alias Joe Cartwright
Director: Lewis Allen
Writer: Robert Vincent Wright
Stars: Lorne Greene, Michael Landon, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 26 January 1964 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
A deft blend of comedy and suspense, "Alias Joe Cartwright" affords series regular Michael Landon the opportunity to play a dual role: His usual characterization of Joe Cartwright, and murderous Army deserter Angus Borden. Mistaken for Borden, Joe is sentenced to a firing squad by martinet Captain Merced (Douglas Dick). But Sgt. O'Rourke (Keenan Wynn) suspects something is amiss, especially when Merced makes it clear that he knows Joe is innocent but is determined to go through with the execution anyway. Throughout the episode O'Rourke's favorite patsy, the hapless Private Peters (Joseph Turkel), runs himself ragged trying to find out if Joe is indeed who he claims to be. Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"Michael Landon takes center stage in this episode of Bonanza as Little Joe has his clothes, horse, and identity stolen by an army deserter played by none other than Michael Landon.
When Sergeant Keenan Wynn and an army patrol find Little Joe on the trail with different clothes and an army horse, he's taken to the fort where the Captain Douglas Dick says it's him. Joe manages to persuade Keenan Wynn to try and contact the Ponderosa to verify his identity.
Landon might not have made it, but for Keenan Wynn's help and for the fact the doppleganger Landon got a bit greedy and decided to hang around and try to cash a bank letter of credit that Lorne Greene gave his son to cash with banker Hugh Sanders.
Not a bad episode at all." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"I like this episode very much, mainly because of the intricate plot and the suspense of it. In it Michael Landon plays Little Joe and the mean and crooked Cpl. Angus Borden, a former soldier; Borden is in cahoots with a mean and crooked Captain Merced who is played by Douglas Dick. Keenan Wynn portrays a boisterous and stubborn Sergeant O'Rourke. Joe Turkel provides humor as he plays the part of the drunk Private Peters. In the story, after he is taking a long trip and has to sleep out on the ground one night, Corporal Borden comes along and knocks out little Joe, switches clothes with him, steals Joe's horse, and leaves his own with a saddle which, in turn, has an army brand on it. It is at that point that Sergeant O'Rourke and two other soldiers come along and arrest Joe and take him to a nearby fort where Joe learns he will be executed the next morning. As the day rolls on Sergeant O'Rourke does learn that Little Joe is truly who he says he is, does try to help him even though O'Rourke can do only so much for him. Again, Landon does play two parts very well and Wynn puts himself into his role so well himself. See the unforgettable episode." Written by daviddaphnered on IMDb.com

They pretty much relied on the mustache and makeup to make him seem different. His acting was pretty weak in that regard. Every time he spoke there were glaring traits of Little Joes mannerisms that came through.

I grew up watching Bonanza on Sunday evenings at 9pm on NBC, channel 4 in Southern California. We lived in the west San Fernando Valley near Chatsworth reservior and Santa Susanna Pass/Iverson Ranch where many episode or parts of episodes were filmed. I was just a kid at the time, so I learned this later. Now I live just a few miles from Vasquez Rocks where this episode was filmed. Many other shows filmed at VR are: Wild Wild West, Rifleman, and Star Trek. I feel fortunate to have lived near these popular film locations, and have visited many times. Bonanza was one of the best shows on TV, in my opinion. There was always an important lesson to be learned written in to the story lines, and it was neat to see how good prevailed in the end. The Cartwrights, although not perfect, were good people, and disliked by some, but there was usually a good ending, like on this episode. It was one of the only shows that portrayed Christians in a positive light, just like Little House on the Prairie did as well. Thank you Michael Landon.

A.R.: A number of western shows were special to me because of the moral lessons taught. I appreciate it more as an adult than I did as a child, but it was good to have the lessons the parents or school taught re morals reinforced. So Bonanza, The Rifleman, Gunsmoke, etc. were all good in that respect. (Those were the ones I favored --- others may have done the same thing).

Keenan Wynn. His father was comedian Ed Wynn. Keenan generally played dramatic parts, but is known to Disney audiences as greedy business tycoon Alonzo Hawk from The Absent-Minded Professor and Herbie Rides Again. Ed Wynn was a vaudeville comic and early TV variety show host who proved his dramatic acting chops in the original TV production of Requiem For A Heavyweight co-starring Keenan. Jack Palance played a boxer whose career was ending. Keenan was his manager, Ed played his cut man. Last time I checked it was here in KZread.

That's carrying a VERY light racing saddle and very small jockey. An average domestic horse will run at a considerably slower speed, especially carrying a western saddle and rider with all their gear. And they could maintain that for maybe 5 miles tops before muscle fatigue sets in and potential damage to the horse.

Although, you always know the Cartwrights will prevail, it is still disturbing when they have to encounter derelicts of all kinds...even military which is regarded as a prestigious establishment.
