Bombardier Flexity 2 Tram - 011 Arrives in Blackpool. 23/03/12.

Bombardier Flexity 2 Tram - 011 Arrives in Blackpool. 23/03/12.
This video shows the new tram arriving at Starr Gate and being unloaded on to the depot head shunt line. The pantograph is raised and the tram takes power for the first time on UK soil and drives off into the depot for commissioning.

Maybe the old trams were charming, looked nicer. I agree with that. But it was also important, that a mom with her kid in the buggy and people having to use a wheelchair can get into and out of trams without asking for help all the time. Or old people who just can't climb steps good and quick anymore. How long do you want to wait at each stop? You probably want no ride that takes very long when you are going to work or school. Taking a ride with a museum tram is another thing. Then you don't care about the time it takes. The way is the goal. But not for daily rides. So the low floor trams and buses were made. Would you like the old charming design on a brand new low floor tram with all technical highlights they should have nowadays?

It is possible for them to be German while having production and engineering sites in 26 other countries. It's actual headquarters are at Schöneberger Ufer 1, Berlin, Germany. Remember not to confuse Bombardier Transportation (a German organisation) with its parent organisation (Bombardier Inc.) These are 2 companies that are both owned by the Canadian business yet operate separately and therefore have different countries of origin.

Whilst the new trams may not be liked by many it needs to be recognised that the Blackpool tram system is still a commercial system that needs to provide modern, up to date transportation and generate revenues in order to sustain itself. Whilst I too love the old trams and their character without the new trams and the income they generate the old would simply cease to be. They have a character of their own too in a way and one day people will be saying "do you remember those old Bombadier trams?"

Bombardier's country of origin is NOT Germany. Bombardier Transport is an international company. From their website: "[2002] Bombardier relocates its Transportation headquarters from Montréal, Canada, to Berlin, Germany. This move strengthens its ability to serve Europe, the world’s largest rail market." It is therefore wrong to call Bombardier a German company just because they moved their headquarters there.

Elegant engineering...but rather sad, taken in context. Alstom is opening both a new wireless hydrail electric rolling-stock plant and a new rail tech academy in Cheshire. Exorbitant 1880s Russian track electrification technology (search "Pirotsy tram") is following steam right over the hill. Pantographs will go the way of coal scoops.

Tell me Stan, why is any article promoting Hydrail from you? And I have news for you. Catenary is still King, and always will be on main lines. Hydrail, while useful for non-electrified lines, is no replacement for the real thing. And I'm an electronic tech, been following the Hydrogen debate closely. It has limited uses, and is expensive when the entire production and delivery process is considered.

"Bombardier Transportation is a German" WRONG! From their website: "With 64 production and engineering sites in 26 countries and 19 service centres across the world, Bombardier Transportation is the global leader in the rail industry." Germany is only one of 26 countries where Bombardier Transportation builds trains. If you're going to attach only one nationality to Bombardier Transportation, it would have to be Canadian.

I'm sorry but I do not like the new trams! The old cream and green ones had character and were a symbol of Blackpool, just like the red Routemaster buses are a symbol of London! These new trams are no different from what you see in places like Manchester or Sheffield. We want trams that are a symbol of Blackpool! If the old ones can't be brought back then at least design new double decker trams that look like the old ones just as the did with the new Routemasters in London. As for the Bombardier trams... Send them to Sheffield or something, they spoil Blackpool!

I agree, Sheffield are getting a new tram in 2016 and it looks like Bombardier are set to be the new trams. At the moment they are made by Siemens. I think the Flexity's would be more in place in Sheffield. I am from Sheffield and have lived in Blackpool at the time the idea was proposed by Blackpool Council and was 16 YO and disgusted by it.
