Bolted Flange Gasket FEA Analysis Usign ANSYS Workbench

This video explains detail FE analysis of Bolted Joint. It briefs about how to apply loading conditions like pressure, bolt pretension using ANSYS Workbench. It explains gasket behavior with bonded and frictional contacts, etc. It also explains leakage possibilities and how to reduce it.
Note: Apply coefficient of friction as 0.1 instead of offset distance, which is applied incorrectly.

    It is really a good video to understand the basic bolted joint analysis. Only one suggestion if you can explain with bolt load diagram, it will be more informative for all the users who are new in ANSYS.

    Thank you for sharing, interesting video. I believe the RTJ oval gaskets are more difficult in the simulation, I was struggling in their solution convergence given bolt preload equal to 50% of the bolt material. If you can run another video with using RTJ gasket that will be much appreciated.

    Hi there, How would you do the analysis if the gasket was Neoprene? I know the material would be nonlinear, but how do you do BC? Do you have any video for nonlinear material like rubber?

  • @graspengineering9249

    @graspengineering9249

    4 жыл бұрын

    Their are two ways to perform nonlinear gasket analysis . 1. Define gasket in mechanical as stiffness behavior, do gasket mesh and define linear, nonlinear loading pressure Vs closure curve in materials. Do the simulation (it is complex) 2. Use hyper elastic material properties, for neoprene rubber calculate Neo Hookean coefficient and defined in material details and do non linear analysis.

    Since both ends are open, there will be equal and opposite reaction to balance the system. Still we need to apply compensating pressure?

  • @graspengineering9249

    @graspengineering9249

    5 жыл бұрын

    We need apply constrain in FEA. Hence if you're constraining one end, you should apply CP at other ends. If constraining both ends, then no need of constrain.

    Applying boundarys can be avoided for equal and opposite shells and beams but for solids they induce a small rotation and you need to lock that with BC

    good demonstration of the video. It would be very kind of you if you can share with the wb zip file to follow up with your video demonstration. I have the following questions 1. how are you changing the bolt pretension values on what basis. 2. how to select the target and contact regions , I mean how do you decide gasket should be contact surface and flange should be target ? is target should be stiffer than contact is this the thing you considered? 3. why have you choose the 3 load steps , why not 2.? as in 1st load case you have chosen bolt pretension and in 2nd step you can apply internal pressure and compensating pressure . y did you chose 2nd load step as lock for bolt pretension? Please help me in clearing my doubts, thanx in advance.

    Thank you for detail view! Please find reply below to your questions. 1. I had assumed bolt pretensions value just to show the effect of it. Generally based on on bolt size and grade you can use bolt pretensions. For M10 and course thread grade 8.8 value is lower, u can increase up-to 12.9 grade if contact pressure is not sufficient. 2. It's based on contract behavior like symmetric or asymmetric. For asymmetric behavior, target surface should be stiffer, lower order mesh surface, coarse mesh surface and larger surface should be target. Opposite surface should be contact. 3. You can do in 2 load step too. I want to see the effect seperatly of bolt pretensions reaction hence added load step 2 locking and load step 3 locking + pressure. If you lock then only I can see reactions.
