Bolex 16mm Camera - OVERVIEW

The Bolex is one of the most popular 16mm cameras out there especially for amateurs looking to learn about the format. I'm taking a full look at a Bolex camera and its different features and functions as well as the big differences between certain models!

    For those with deep pockets there is the Bolex EL which is an electric motorized camera with reflex and can do sync sound. Though you would need to put it in a blimp to shoot sync sound since the camera is noisy. And for those who want a more robust lens mount there is the Bolex SB models which stands for single lens bayonet mount replacing the turret. The mounts are big and can hold bigger lenses and even long zooms. The EL runs about $5K and up while the SB models go from $3K or more.

    My compliments on a tutorial that is jammed-packed with everything you'd ever want to know about Bolex movie cameras. I've still got one I bought over 50 years ago. Sad part it is regular 8mm, which I always thought was way superior to Super 8 but is unavailable today. The camera itself is identical to the 16mm in its dimensions and features.

    Thanks for making this video. I recently got a H16 and some 500T and I'm excited to try it out. I do have one question, what would the repurcussions be if I shot with a non Anti-Reflex lens? Say any other C-Mount. I've noticed people have ghosting issues with the Reflex when using the non-reflex lenses, but with the lack of prisms in the non-reflex I wondered if that would still be an issue? Anyway, thanks for making this and supporting film. Cheers!

    Hey there love the channel, You inspired me to pull the trigger and buy a bolex. Do elgeet D mount lenses work on the H16 bolex? I have a few kicking around so I bought a d-mount to cmount adapter and it doesn't seem to be able to focus when I look into the view finder. I figured the focal dimensions were similar or am I missing something?

  • @AnalogResurgence

    @AnalogResurgence

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'm not 100% sure but it might be an issue with the rear focal length and just the distance between the back of the lens to the film. I'd also be wary about D mount lenses being able to cover the whole frame properly because they're meant for 8mm frames and not 16mm. I've never experimented with that sort of thing personally though!

    Ok I think I bought a REX 4 model advertised as a REX 5 model. because it has the 400ft mag attachment but the serial number is too low (according to Bolex Collector) to be a REX 5. What I think I have is what was originally a 1965 REX 4 but modded into a REX 5. Not that I’m complaining I just find it interesting.

    Hello , good job on the video . Keep it up . Question : is it a good idea to buy 400ft rol and cut it onto 100ft rols in a dark room load bag (in the dark) , to cut back on purchase prices for film , when 1 rol 16mm b/w 400ft = 125$ and 1 rol 16mm b/w 100ft = 45$ ( x 4 for 400ft = 180$) ? What are the hacks for cutting back on purchase and processing costs ? Thank you .

  • @AnalogResurgence

    @AnalogResurgence

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes! That's a pretty common thing to do if you have the ability to put it onto smaller 100ft rolls in the dark. It can save a little money that way.

Just an eye piece sticking out of the hole 😅 I've gone on ebay to search for one but I can't tell the difference between the side and top viewfinder by sight alone. What do I need to search for specifically to find a replacement top view finder?

  • @AnalogResurgence

    If it's advisable to not store your camera wound up, then is it possible to unwind the camera without advancing the film?

  • @AnalogResurgence

    @AnalogResurgence

    3 жыл бұрын

    No you can't unwind the camera once it has been wound without advancing the film. My solution when I realize I've loaded film but maybe won't be shooting for weeks or even months is to advance the film until the wind is done, and then rewind the film using the Bolex's built in film counter as reference. As long as the lens cap is on then you won't be losing film! It's really only a big concern if you were to store it for months or years at a time with the spring motor wound up.
