The theme of today’s episode seemed to be “fatherhood,” and it was interesting to see the contrast between all the B&B dads (especially interesting given the proximity of the episode to Father’s a day IRL). At both ends of the spectrum we have the polar opposites: Deacon, the scheming deadbeat who brings his toddler to a smoke-filled bar, and Jack, the loving father who will drop everything to run to his daughter’s side and offer her solace and guidance, even though she’s an adult. In the middle we have Eric, the man who does want the best for his children but doesn’t have a strong enough character to advise well, and Ridge, the father who loves his children dearly but through his own stupidity will bring devastation to their happy home and family life. Even Rick, the puerile college boy who has the maid sending him dinners on a tray, is genuinely concerned about little Eric. What unites nearly all of these men is that each one has done something to hurt their children. Eric broke up his marriage to Stephanie for Brooke; Deacon ripped Little Eric away from a safe and loving home as a sop to his own ego; Ridge slept with Morgan; and Rick invited the vampire that is Deacon to step over his threshold. The one exception, at least at face value, is the “Father Knows Best” prototype that is Jack. Yet even Jack inadvertently hurt Taylor by asking her to come see him when he was sick, thus providing an opportunity for Morgan’s treachery. However, the men also seem to share - again, on a continuum - love and concern for their children. Even Deacon, although he blusters, looks somewhat chagrined when Amber lectures him on how harmful the bar could be for Little Eric. It’s an interesting exploration on both fatherhood and how that changes both by personality and generation. There’s also a little meta undercurrent when you consider that at this point the show is being helmed by a man who inherited it from his own father. And he will ultimately treat his “children” - I.e., the B&B characters - very differently than their original progenitor.

Great post Faye! Indeed the show often has these "theme" episodes and you're so right about fatherhood in this one. Remember by the way that Jack also hurt his children _directly_ with his gambling addiction, which split their family for a while (Jack's backstory). Love your meta point about Bill and Brad Bell at the end! 😄

I love this post! I am also especially fond of these "theme" episodes because they show how the writer of that particular episode made an effort to go beyond the individual storylines and actually create connections between them.

Eric is the last person who should be giving marital advice. Well next to Brooke anyway.

Brad Bell ruin the legacy of TRIDGE. For all us old timer B&B fans know Taylor was specifically brought in for the Ridge Brooke Taylor triangle, more so for Ridge to move on. As we see here RIDGE is totally in Love with Taylor, cried when she almost died giving birth to the twins. Taylor was the only woman he chased from the beginning. Stopping her from marrying Storm Logan, couldn’t stand Blake going after her, making sure Thorne didn’t have her and when it came down to choosing between Brooke & Taylor it was Taylor. He even told Taylor the reason he divorced her was because of Brooke’s kids a.k.a. his siblings. Who did he go to when he found out Bridgette wasn’t his, he ran to her rescue when she had a stalker. Once Brad Bell had full control and his parents couldn’t do anything about his creativity that was the beginning of the end of TRIDGE. He used the James & Taylor incident to break them up. Mind you Taylor wrote a note to Ridge telling him about it before leaving for Cairo, but Stephanie took the letter. These episodes give me the joy of seeing this AMAZING LEGACY of Bill & Lee Bell and the GLORY DAYS OF B&B!

But at this point, Brooke was no longer an issue for Ridge. He had a stable dream relationship with Taylor and everything you could wish for. He just ruined it through his stupidity. Of course everything changes later because Taylor "dies" - but even when she came back he still felt a deep love for her. Only then was everything handed to KKL on a silver platter in favor of her.

I don't understand this kind of argument because till 2002, Brooke is the one who suffers the most for Ridge'choices with Caroline and Taylor. He really treated her like trash. And after 2002 Brooke would fall in love with many men and would use Ridge as a puppet. So I can't see the great Bridge romance.

Taylor’s father knows about her infidelity with James. It would have been nice if he would have reminded her she did something wrong too. She should forgive him

Yes I do remember. And what actually happened was: Ridge was with Brooke and Grant in a meeting bc Brooke as usual was using the Forrester stock to try to get Ridge back, by giving Grant the CEO position over the company, bc she was mad Ridge was going to marry Taylor instead of her.. Taylor erroneously thought Ridge was still interested in Brooke which is why he didn't show, which is why she drank so much til she accidentally set her house on fire. Ridge was still in love with Taylor and wanted to marry her. Thorne however, had his own agenda as he (as per usual) wanted his brother's woman. So his fixing up her house was for his own ends. And soon Thorne and Brooke would be in cahoots to keep a pregnant Taylor and Ridge apart for their own purposes, even tho it was clear as day that Ridge loved Taylor and vice versa.

I remember clearly because I’m currently watching that season ( 10) along with this one Anyway,Ridge was in a meeting with Grant and Brooke trying to convince her not to put Grant in charge He never bothered to call Taylor and she jumped to the conclusion he was with Brooke. Brooke wasn’t trying to get Ridge at this time .She was trying to move on with Grant and thought it best for her to step away From Forrester for awhile to work on her marriage.

Great Post❤Yes Taylor forgive Ridge. Stop 🛑 all of that “What happened to us?”. Ridge made a DUMB mistake😮. Taylor you need to take some blame, being so naive😮. Once that Psycho Morgan said she wanted Ridge to be the Father of her baby, Taylor should have used her Psychological background & just plain common sense that was given to her by Stephanie to get rid of Morgan😮
