Irish fan here. First time coming across podcast. Ire biggest issue is lack of squad depth at loosehead and 9 as well as having an inexperienced but exciting 10. Ire also lacks top end speed on the wings so we struggle to score off first phase. SA can get multiple injuries and have amazing replacements (aside from 10) and have wicked pace and power

Gibbs looks great! My favourite British and Irish Lions player. As an Irish man I know we have boxed above our weight for a number of years. We have always struggled against physically dominant sides and only win when our best are on the park. Both those are against us for this tour. Just one too many key players missing and we just don’t have SA’s depth. Our only hope is the Springboks don’t play to their potential, but this is possible and our guys a smart players who will take advance of any weakness.

Brilliant conversation
Ireland peaked just before the WC, the ridiculous draw halted a potential WC final, but they were unconvincing at the 6 nations, despite winning and really should have had the grand slam, but without Sexton and JGP we are in a development stage with new personnel, looking forward to the games, but very unlikely that Ireland will reach the level they achieved in NZ with the series win. Hopefully they can get some fresh talent in before the next WC.

My team I think Kwagga at 8 Roos on Bench switch it up for the 2nd test. Pollard start with Sacha on the bench (utility opens to a 6-2 split) with Cobus I think goes safe with KLA and VD Merwe will play in the 2nd test.

Missing Hansen, Keenan, JGP and Conan. The rest of the squad look tired, mentally shot and short of anything resembling form. Few young players pushing for a place so levels of competition within the squad are pretty low. I dont think this series will be particularly close to be honest. Just a month or two too far into this never ending season.
I would disagree and say that the 2023 version was the best Irish team of the professional era. The 2024 version without JGP and Sexton, is just not on the same level.

Lekke boys!!
I am not sure it is personal, wales had a 4 game win streak against South Africa. I think the most annoying thing from an Irish fan that i can think of, is that Rugby History only started at Chicago 2016 onwards. It is easy to just say they have won 7 of the last 11 since the end of 2004, but if you include all the games from the turn of the century, it is 7 each and that is excluding the British and IRISH lions tests, that does not count since the IRISH part is just relevant and brought up if you get the name wrong. Look, Wales and Australia have had similar win records vs South Africa, and eventually the tide turns and it goes the other way. Still a 50/50 game on the 6th.
With browns influence we might see a different Pollard. He would already have a criteria for the first 5 8th to fit in

I would start Malcom because he is a good fetcher. I would also start Evan. Then replace Marx with Bongi and Siya with Kwagga. Then we have a good fetcher for the entire game. Make Evan work for as long as possible to see if he has the endurance at test level.
