Secretariat’s advice is actually kinda shit. It’s more like Secretariat is telling him to run away from any responsibilities for his actions, which Secretariat himself did, which led to his suicide.

TL;DR I agree with you. I believe the writers wanted Secretariates advice to be somewhat bad, but I also think they wanted to use running as a metaphor throughout the season for striving for happiness, so I tried to piece all of the proper scenes together to understand that. Secretariate took it to one extreme, never looking back, while Bojack took it to the other extreme, always looking back. A person needs to learn from their past, but focus on their future. They need to understand where they came from to know where they're going. The focus of the video, however, was on Bojack who was constantly looking at where he came from without ever trying to understand it so I didn't bother mentioning the flaw in the advice. I do the same thing in the season 4 journey where Bojack finally learns to leave his past behind him.

Isn’t that what love it’s what you want in a relationship from the other person that can give it to you it’s all selfish when you only think of them when you need to other than that you just watch and see other lives rather than yourself the people just hide it with a mask of using affection sweet talk it’s just that person on your mind and it stays their when your near them you battle for love but alone you think of something else it just becomes the main goal to you when their in the way of your love

Was I the only one who read Secretariat’s advice to bojack as terrible advice? Like it stresses future focus rather than past reflection, something bojack needs to learn, but it is also an incredibly selfish message, and obviously one that didn’t help secretariat, given how his story ends.

  • @mikhailstewart

I dont think it was suppose to be good advice. The Secreteriat was a broken man who refused to deal with the burdens of his past and that's what led to his suicide.

  • @Tyler-cm6vk

    @Tyler-cm6vk

    4 жыл бұрын

Yes the message was flawed and it was the main cause that led to Secretariat killing himself. But BoJack's problem was getting trapped by the past. The whole show explores him as a has-been, having very little sense of purpose while everything changes around him. He never learns how to learn from it. Obviously he has problems with remembering things but the biggest focus of the show is his problem with looking back without looking ahead. The show just addresses that the message shouldn't be taken to an extreme.

That's kind of the point. He took bad advice from someone that would eventually commit suicide when he found no longer run from his problems. Bojacks entire life is him making bad decisions based on toxic people around him. His decisions are his own but they are reactions of his environment. It makes you wonder what would have happened had Beatrice given bojack up for adoption in secret and married the person that was chosen for her instead of getting stuck with the deadbeat that knocked her up.

I think Secretariat's advice is a parallel to "don't stop dancing" showing that Bojack internalized this lesson, giving Sarah Lynn the same advice that he's lived by during her childhood. Sarah Lynn, like Secretariat dies tragically young believing that her soul purpose is to put a show on, similar to Secretariat's advice to keep running no matter what is thrown at you, resulting in their deaths because of living to entertain others.

other reason bojack wanted to secretly dump wanda is that he isn't used to be romantic to women, bojack just seduce them to get laid with him and then abandon them like used condoms, he didn't know how to deal with genuine romantic feelings and prefered to get rid of wanda instead of learning how to deal with the feeling also that when things went topsy turvy with secretariat, she blamed wanda for it same way he blamed that executive woman that made him betray herb and turned him into an asshole, like if is wanda's fault of his assholeness

What more would there be for them to say or do? They had a relationship which failed because of who Bojack was. Sure, he's changed, but he's never shown much regret for his relationship with Wanda. I think he only actively remembered her once during Gina's song and dance. That's it. Sarah Lynn and Charlotte and Penny are all far more important to him, for good reasons.

Blackouts are so much stranger than that. You can say and do things that seem completely normal while having no memory of it later on. This is how people wake up in a different city than where they started drinking. The bigger deal though is bojack giving teenagers alcohol. Had he been willing to grow up a little he would have just dumped their alcohol and let them have a good time without it. To be better than he was at that age. But its bojack and he can't see how his actions have consequences for people other than himself.

Felt really out of character for Wanda, but like the writers wanted us to see the similarities between them. Both Wanda and Angela did what they had to do for the benefit of them/the network.

I'm probably gonna get lynched for this but I honestly don't think what Beatrice said in "brand new couch" was meant to be cruel or abusive. Rather, she was simply telling a harsh truth that bojack and the audience don't want to face: there's no cure for being a person. There's no sitcom or movie role that will change what is broken about you. No one can give you something that will change something fundamental about you. For bojack? Its that he's bojack horseman. He desperately wants to be anyone but bojack horseman. But he can't. That's something he can't change. but what he *can* change is how that effects his life and what being bojack horseman means. When I hear her say "you were born broken. that's you're birthright. Its not just you though. You're father and I... But you come by it honestly. You're bojack horseman; there's no cure for that." ? I don't hear her saying something cruel. I hear a less direct version of "you are all the things wrong with you. Its not the drugs, the alcohol, the shitty people in you're carrer, or you parents. It's you." Its like Weiss schnee in rwby. She can't change the fact she's a schnee. Her semblance is proof of this because it's heiritary. But wiess can change what being a schnee means to her. She can change how this fact effects her way of looking at the world. "I don’t know who you think you are, but let me tell you who I am: I am the granddaughter of a hero and a child of a villain. I am a citizen of a fallen Kingdom and an heir to nothing. I will not be defined by my name because I will be the one to define it!" -Weiss vol 9.

I defend BoJack in the New Mexico situation. Penny was being persistent into sleeping with BoJack. She was making quite a few excuses like she wasn’t drinking (because she was driving the car), saying she has condoms in her room, and the age of consent. Legally he was would be safe but he refused to sleep with her because he cares about her. Then on the Boat she was still being persistent, saying she knows what she wants. When Charlotte got on the boat and saw them in bed, she jumped to conclusions and assumed that BoJack was seducing Penny but she didn’t know everything about what happened to them. I feel Penny didn’t tell Charlotte the truth. Yes I can agree that BoJack wasn’t thinking about Charlotte when he was trying to convince her to run away with him but she wasn’t thinking straight when she kissed him but she wanted to stay loyal to her family. But in Season 5 Kyle did say he and Charlotte had some troubles but they fixed them. As for Penny in Season 3, when she saw BoJack she started getting terrified and playing the victim. She was the one who wanted to sleep with him.

+Chris Klessen - I disagree. Penny was seventeen whereas Bojack was fifty at the time of this season. That's, what? A 33 year age gap? You're correct in saying that Penny was very persistent, and I've seen the argument that "Penny is mature enough to make her own decisions". To that I'd say the entire episode begs to differ. The whole episode she acts like your typical teenager, mood swings, immaturity and whathaveyou. Besides, as Bojack said to Penny himself, "you don't know what you want". She's a stupid teenager, her hormones getting the best of her. Bojack has no excuse, he's a middle-aged adult and attempted to have sex with a (albeit consenting) 17-year-old girl. Doesn't that come across as even the slightest bit creepy to you? That's not even mentioning what else Bojack did that night. A fifty-year-old man went to a highschool prom with a bunch of 16/17 somethings' and supplied them with alcohol. Maddy (Penny's friend) actually passed out from alcohol poisoning and Bojack proceeded to abandon Pete at the ER whilst also being surprisingly threatening in his tone and demeanour. Hell, Bojack only even decided to have sex with Penny because he felt sorry for himself. I understand WHY he did it, but it doesn't excuse the fact that he still did it.

I agree, and to think the topic of what happened in New Mexico is still one of the most debatably discussed topics of the series to this day, but you're right Charlotte jumped to conclusions way to quickly, she thought Bojack was seducing Penny, but as we all know Penny was the one who basically seduced Bojack, not the other way around, so if anything (And i know this is obvious by now) Bojack was the victim of that whole situation, and the only thing Penny is the victim of is her own misguided actions.

age of consent only applies to minors interacting with minors. bojack is in his fifties, and Penny is seventeen. That is not ok. do not defend him. he knew better. also, yikes my guy! victim blaming is horrible. with age comes knowledge and realizations. penny realized that what happened was horrific, and it traumatized her. dont victim blame please

Age of consent applies to all peoples, not just minors interacting with minors. It is not victim-blaming to point out that Penny was also at fault in the situation. She was not a victim, she was a willing participant in the act. Bojack being much older than Penny doesn't matter in the context, as Penny was a legal consenting party, morally it may have been wrong in some ways, but Bojack was also very clearly in intoxicated and not thinking clearly. Penny jumped on this and used it to coerce him into sleeping with her, even though he decides to do so to make himself feel better. Bojack wasn't in the right, but neither was Penny. She certainly wasn't a victim in any way, unless it was a victim to herself.

@@ozi3865 no it doesnt. It literally doesn't. Penny was a victim and ppl need to stop acting like 17 year olds are "smart" or "know what they're doing". People never know what they're doing until theyre like. 30-40. Bojack is literally a gross old 50 year old man who bought minors alcohol, pressured them to drink it, made advances on a seventeen year old, and stalked her to try and "apologize" and sent her into a flashback.
