Boiler Tube Welding | Boilermakers TIG Welding for Power Plants

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Abe got with Xavier a former student of SCWA to to show you how they weld a tube panel! Here is some boilermaker welding coming at you! They will showcase the buddy welding system which is one guy feeding the wire while the other welder manipulates the torch. Team work!

Should of picked up some 3/32 7018 after the Tig root pass and learn to buddy weld learn to pick up the arc up from your partner from the other side of the tube panel, continue the weld on your side and hand off the arc to you partner, clean your weld and get a rod ready to pick up the arc from your partner and repeat / slag welding makes a beautiful weld on the cap if you're welding hot enough especially on stainless stick and don't forget the sponge after milling the tubes !!!!! Also the piece that replaces a blowout is called a Dutchman , and yes I'm a union boilermaker 154 strong!!!

I welded with some guys from local 72 in Atlanta. I wasn't a union welder. I ended up fixing their welds. Being a "union" guy doesn't mean anything. It means you give money to your union and they donate your "union" money to democratic politicians. I watched those guys asking all the hands for money because a 40 year "union" hand died and the union wasn't helping his family. I also watched a 36 year union hand retire and the stewards and union reps didn't even show up to congratulate the guy. It's disgusting what I saw the "unions" do. No thanks

Working both Union and None Union for over 30 years. There is good and bad welders in both. But the nice things about working in the union environment is you have a place to practice and test for no cost, your benefits are paid for 100% by the employer, employers pay into your retirement (Pension)package so much per hour, the wages and standards are agreed and stay the same for entire time on the Union agreement. As well as all members pay a death assessment if you die and is given to the Beneficiaries. While working none union you get what they offer and can change when ever employer wants to change your wages, benefits if there is any and standards other than the legal standards they have to follow. I prefer working for a union Environment and there is way more benefits for the worker and my time is compensated better. At least these are some examples of my experiences.

Most where non union and tested in. Come up north and you won’t be fixing my unions shit I’ll tell you that lol. I’ve worked with plenty of 72 hands. Usually your partner starts on one side and welds towards you. Then takes over feeding and welding until he reaches the other side where you feed him again. And 90% of the time it's root pass gtaw then swap to smaw for fill and cap. The smaw is the actual "buddy welding".

Congrats on being an apprentice, but please remember that being a journeyman Boilermaker means you can do any and all of our trade. In over 20 years, I’ve never seen anyone’s union book say “Boilermaker Welder”. They say Journeyman once you bust out. Too many guys think that they are “welders only” and most are only rod burners, not a true welder and there’s a lot of work that has to be done prior to most the welding, such as demo or hanging new panels. Not trying to say anything bad, just trying to change the mindset of some of the younger generation. We need everyone that cares and wants to learn a good trade. I’m a 2nd generation, graduate apprentice out of Local 101. Went to the apprenticeship competition and now I’m a superintendent for a good sized Union Contractor. Just please don’t get stuck focusing on welding. Yes it’s a big part of our trade, but it’s only part of the skill set you will have after you bust out of the apprenticeship.

Dave Uhl thanks for the advice. I say I’m a boilermaker welder because that’s what I am in the union... I understand that I will learn Mechanic work and that I will do mechanic work. However, in the union I am a PSW (Pressure system welder) and I am going through the PSW program that was introduced to the union around 10 years ago. So when I’m a journeyman I will be a journeyman PSW. I am also on the welders list for dispatch. When a contractor wants welders then they call off the welders list. I have done mechanic work and I enjoy the mechanic work as well. However I am considered a welder

Quinn Howlett when finished with your apprenticeship, you will be a red seal certified journeyperson Boilermaker. Currently you’re a Boilermaker Apprentice, nothing more and nothing less, unless you’re trying to take a welding test for your hall and then plan on buying your book, in which case you wouldn’t be an apprentice at all. But again, best wishes and get out there and make the Boilermakers Union proud by being the best you always can be.

Dave Uhl currently I am a second year Boilermaker PSW apprentice... I was hired into the union as a welder, in a separate welding program. I do not go through the same schooling as the mechanics... I will still be getting my red seal journeyman certification at the end of my apprenticeship, but I will still be a Boilermaker PSW, which is a Boilermaker Welder, getting dispatched from the welders list... I know what I am dude lol

The only place you need to feed wire to each other is on the sides. That’s a luxury that you can only do if you’re not on a waterfall with a bad draft. Otherwise you just gotta reach back in there and get it. You can burn the bevel off with your arc (if the gap is tight) and feed your wire on the inside to give you more room.

I have been on plenty of tube jobs and have never done this. It’s always been partner fills you wire for the tacks then you weld a quarter of the tube with your right hand then do the other quarter with your left. Then you pass the torch to your buddy and he does this same. And this is on black liquor boilers.... And also forget about the burr grinder, you only use that if you absolutely need it. And if you know how to weld you will almost never need it. Do they typically have a machine with lift arc in the field when doing this or do you have to scratch start?

  • @eridu77

Most contractors rent Miller XMT or a Lincoln equivalent, which has lift arc, and can stick, then run a Suitcase for FCAW the membrane between tubes.

Just stick with scratch start. Then you don’t have to worry if you have to switch polarity midstream. You won’t have to climb out of the hole

You're not supposed to, lol. At least from what I've seen. Code dictates TIG. Ive seen exceptions made for a huge string of tube cutouts where its quicker to root with tig and cap with stick, but 99% of tube work ive seen is with tig. Im a boilermaker welder up in Canada

@@vangoghsseveredear It depends on what kind of tubes you’re welding in the boiler. Some you TIG all the way out and some you TIG root and hot pass, then SMAW fill and cap. It’s all dependent upon obstruction, thickness and material of the metal.

I don’t think they will put the squeeze on tubes in a class. Mostly visual instruction. Maybe they could cut coupons for bind-test. Non-destructive such as x-ray ( not practical in class situations for obvious reasons.)

  • @eridu77

    @eridu77

    2 жыл бұрын

With a stickout that much a jumbo cup would serve you better to keep down porosity and improve the surface oxidation. There's also Pyrex cups to see through. A mini rig (WP-9FV) is rated for 125amps. If cheaply made they burn up often. I just don't see the need to have a light duty rig rig to do that, there's nothing in your way to restrict the movement of the head so why not get a WP-17H with a jumbo stubby and weld in it's capacity?

My favorite is; “I have been doing so much, for so long, with so little, that I’m now qualified to do anything, with nothing!”

Not true, there’s boilers specifically called watertube boilers. The tubes are filled with water. So not necessarily just steam will be seen in tubes.

@CalikuhL you are absolutely correct! Pipes are for conveying liquids and are not high-pressure tubes. Yes there is water in tubes but mostly steam and pressure. Pipes will explode under similar pressures.

Don't do the weave on the fill pass. It takes to long and tends to undercut on the top. I've took a test for the power industry last year. It was a gap - 5/32 with a 3/ 32 filler ( the inspector was very strict with the gap and filler size, nothing more, nothing less) 120 for the root, 150 for the fill with 2 stringers , 150 for the first two stringers on cap , 125 - 135 for the last. The membrane ( distance between the pipes) was 3/8. Time limit - 60 minutes for two joints.

The membrane between the tubes on either side of the tube that you're welding on prevents them from moving. If you're on a emergency outage the plant wants the boiler up as fast as possible. So they aren't going to want to take the time to remove and replace any extra membrane. We do use wedges to spread tubes in other areas though.
