Watch PG's John Bohlinger take a swing at handshaping an acoustic neck. Plus, learn how the Martin's master craftsman reverse engineers the company's gold-standard profiles from their most-heralded instruments.
Instrument design manager Rameen Shayegan leads Bohlinger into the Martin Custom Shop where he gets a crash course in how their team makes neck shapes that are snowflakes. However, the talented crew also divulges how they explore guitarcheology by reproducing some of the neck profiles that are on their most-iconic instruments within the Martin museum. This is one of the process that helped create the company's popular Authentic Series.

Hand carving a neck or Les Paul top & finish sanding them are 2 of the most rewarding skills I ever learned. Soak it up John.
I knew those hot summer days sanding Danelectro necks would pay off!!😂
Master luthier right there! Shaving that neck like it’s hot margarine. I’d be nervous too trying to shape that neck.
The necks are CNC most of the way prior to the hand work....no? I use the same pedestal , ALL hand work no CNC. My Respect to the Martin builders.!
Mr. Bohliger can't take his eyes off the neck. Quite endearing, really. I definitely understand: it's cool to watch a skilled craftsman. EDIT: I wish there was an hour long vid where Mike makes a neck and talks us through the whole process.
Cool!
Make a time travelling guitar!
Watching John carve gave me anxiety. 😬
DOWN, John. What part of down do you not understand? Mike is a much more patient man than I am.
Oh my o my that one could really talk to much. Please be quiet for a while. Carwing a neck is not that difficult. Would be more of interest, how the volut is made, but supsect that machinery is doing that.
