FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

I had the pleasure of flying a Stearman for 20 years. In January 1965 two friends and I bought a PT 17 Stearman, I had just got my private pilots license in August of "64. This was my first tail "dragger". After getting checked out in it, I had no difficulty flying any other tail wheel airplane. The second Stearman was almost five years to the date. That one I flew for fourteen more years plus. I flew them planes almost every day, except in really bad weather. I learned aerobatics in it, and just loved it. Wish I still owned it, or still could afford to own it. We sold it in "83 and I walked away with $5000 more, each, than we had in it. The Stearman is one of the best airplanes to poke holes in the sky. Bob

Hey Steve, Loved the opening sequence with the olde looke and olde soundey narration, LOL. Then the burst of music in the soundtrack and the explosion of green throughout the video - great work! Thank you for posting, I'll watch this one a few times.
Finally!!! You have been teasing this video for MONTHS!!! I am so glad I was finally able to see this. It looked like a blast and I envy you greatly. Keep up the great videos!!!

For my 71 birthday a week ago I flew in an 1942 Stearman from Vintage Avation at Mack Colorado. I have been a passenger in many single engine planes but the Srearman was an exciting experience like no other flying experience I have had. Enjoyed your video and should receive mine soon.
I’m scheduled to take a flight in a Stearman this week out of Falcon Field in Mesa, AZ. Can’t wait! Thanks for this video!!
I don't know how you got Dennis to be so comfortable in front of the camera, but he is doing a great job and adding so much good content to your videos. Kudos to him as well.

Love your channel, love the stearman, thanks for taking everyone along, my dad (army air corps) b24 flight engineer 1943,45.
Thank you so much for your videos. So far in life, I have missed in the opportunity to fly regularly. I hope someday that can change. Until then, you make it possible to live vicariously through your time in the air. For that, I thank you.

just flew a stearman very recently, it is the first plane i have ever flown with full control of the stick, it was so simple to fly i was simply told that when turning right to use the rutter, i knew every thing else and it was a absolute joy to fly it
Great! I'm going up in a Stearman this month for the first time, and I can't wait. This has been the plane I've wanted to fly since I was about ten (well, actually it was the Sopwith Camel because... snoopy!) I'm serously pumped!!

Awesome video. I love taking off from Grass Strips
Steve, Absolutely amazing work. Seriously, you're REALLY continuing to step up your production value (as I've mentioned before). As an aviation film guy, I did notice that camera placement and was actually telling a friend I noticed - 2 min later was that placement disclaimer. Loved that intro! I'm really enjoying the series you have been putting on splitting up the flights into different segments based on crucial parts of flying a particular plane. I have my tailwheel endorsement now (working on those videos and may incorporate some of your editing techniques) and I'm looking forward to flying with a friend that also has access to a Stearman. We have done some formation flying with him (working on that video too) and it seems like a really awesome plane. I appreciate the educational tips and everything you and your crew put into these productions, I notice the fine details (like the camera) that you have including cuts and camera angles.

Michael Carr thanks Micheal! And yeah, I love film making, but am also trying to "keep it real" with these productions - so any time I "cheat" for the sake of making it cinematic (such as that case where I used one camera to get two angles) I like to admit it so people don't wonder what is real.
I will admit. I love Biplanes. and thank you for cutting the music when you spun up that engine. Gotta love radials! I've seen only one biplane up close, I think it might have been a Stearman, but it was yellow. No, it didn't fly that day.
I am most definitely NOT dead inside! LOL Brilliant job - and thanks for cutting the music!
Gotta love the Stearman. Strong work again with this video!

The Stearman is a GREAT plane to fly! I had the opportunity to fly one a few days ago and it was AMAZING. The pilot gave me the chance to take the controls over Goodyear, AZ and it was VERY simple and easy to control. There was no difficulty with the controls during flight. He handled the takeoff and landing (I only have 18 total hours of flight time and NO taildragger experience) and I flew the cruise and approach.
Love the B&W pseudo-40s film serial intro :) And it's awesome to see the Stearman featured :)

Another great vid Steve. Keep up the good work. I don't get up north much, so I'm hoping you'll be down in the Tulsa area someday. We can all have a beer...Jason, Matt, me, etc.
Attention to stall at a few feet above ground for best three point landing. After touching down full back elevator. After losing rudder authority raise up to foot brakes for gentle brake slowing and steering. It will want to ground loop if not ground flown after touching down. A beautiful aircraft and fascinating presentation.😊

Nice video. Enjoyable and informative. Thanks for stopping the music at engine start.
Pilot class 45B. I have about 100 hs. in the PT-17. Great flying
Back in the prehistoric days there was very rarely a nosewheel. You flew tailwheel or stayed grounded. Back seat of a J-3 was much like sitting in a hole when on the ground. One learned to look to the side, angled forward, for takeoffs and landings.. in front all you had was the panel and front seat. Try it. You'll like it. No superhumans needed. And yes, the Stearman is a kick in the butt.

***** An ag pilot asked me to reduce pitch on a ground adjustable prop. I did and then test hopped it. It didn't want to fly. Slow to get off the ground in spite of solid controls, stalled when I tried to slow flight to let an 85 hp Aeronca form up, and I undershot the same landing several times, kept adding power to get to the next point. No bounce. Reported to pilot. He asked if I had a full tank of water and he meant the 80 gal. Rawdon tank in the front seat. He'd been practicing with water. That's 640 pounds plus equipment. Says a lot for proper preflight. Scared the hell outa me.
A VERY fun plane! So much agility and strength based on almost relying on furring strips and bed sheets. It can handle ugly stuff.
Awesome Intro!
That engine looks like a 225hp Lycoming 9 cylinder. The Navy used those over the 220hp. Continental 7 cylinder. My time in the Stearman was the best times in my life. We even flew it to Canada, East of Rice lake East of Toronto. We also had a Republic SeaBee that we kept in Sudbury, where we would fly our land planes across lake Erie and then down the center of the Georgian Bay to Sudbury. After customs, we flew the SeaBee to the South East arm of Lake Temagami.Much much fun.+

+FlightChops Other than the Sea Bee, and Stearman, I owned a straight 35 Bonanza. I was what you call an airport bum. I would be there almost every day for 20 years. Filled my first to log books in 10 years, and quit logging. I'm an old guy now(78) but think of flying all the time. Enjoy it while you can, the years fly by quicker than you think. Tail wheel airplanes are really not too hard to fly, as long as you don't use the rudder bars for a foot rest. Happy Flying, Bob

Stick should be back until you want to lift the tail up to provide steering with the tailwheel. Then push and lift tail up into clean air for rudder control. Do not let the plane wallow around in between these two positions.
