Almost as famous as Airwolf!!
Airfix have released their Bravo November and its Worth the Wait!!
An aircraft which possibly underlines the capabilities of the modern helicopter more effectively than any other type, the mighty Boeing CH-47 Chinook has already been in military service for over sixty years and shows no sign of disappearing from world skies any time soon.
The distinctive tandem twin-rotor configuration of this heavy-lift helicopter cleverly counteracts the effects of engine torque by having each of its huge rotor blade stacks rotate in opposite directions, thus negating the need for the tail rotors traditionally associated with helicopters.
The impressive Chinook made its first flight in 1961 and since then, it has become one of the most effective aircraft designs of the post-war era, capable of operating in almost any environment, no matter how inhospitable the terrain. Clearly, this has made the Chinook invaluable when performing many roles, ably tackling a multitude of military and civilian applications.

The container ship is likely to be the Atlantic Conveyor, a Merchant Ship ´taken up for trade ´ for use in the Falklands Campaign. She was sank by 2 x Argentine Exocets which killed 12 Merchant Seamen. Lest we forget. She was transporting all the helicopters for use on Op Corporate and they were all lost except Chinook BN and one other (Wessex or Sea King) as they were already airborne at the time of the attack. A nice fitting touch by Airfix and a beautiful looking model. I’ll buy one 👍🏼 Ian

@@MOS6510Models Thats a fantastic write up. I’ve 5 or 6 years on you and remember everything you mentioned there! But you forgot A-HA! 😁 Smashing history on BN which I flew on several times in Northern Ireland, Germany, Iraq and Afghanistan. She earned her retirement. Subbed to the substack too. Ian

Did a few air assaults from this particular chinook in Afghan with 42 Commando back in 08/09. Will definitely be picking this one up and giving it the Herrick paintjob. Beautiful model

I worked on BN in the Falklands in '82 when 7 Sqn took over from the 18 Sqn lads. It was sent back to the UK not long after - it was knackered. As for the kit looks OK. However - if you want it configured as it was during the war, it possibly has the wrong blades fitted. if I remember correctly, It should have the older thinner square ended root, metal blades. These are the broader plastic blades that weren't fitted until after the war (at least the ones that were sent immediately after that we had, because we replaced them). Look for photos of chinooks aboard ships, before they were lost. The chinooks generally had the back end panelled up at this time, not bare pipework. However, I know we *did* eventually start leaving it all off, with just the drip tray below the APU fitted. Not sure if that was in the FI though. MY photos from 82 show it all fitted. BTW The seats straps being solid is bad! You can clearly see the back of them through the windows, and airfix have neglected to mold them as straps. BN During the war was pretty dirty too, and that was probably because it was covered in Preservative, which was yellowy waxy gunk like waxoyl that attracts dust & dirt nicely. Also L/H pilot door can be removed for that authentic mid-war look.

Wow thats excellent.. i know from talking to others they were extremely filthy but the wax oil makes sense. We cant have it all and sometimes airfix design to a price point, Thank you @memkiii for leaving a comment. Please subscribe if you haven't as yet.. It really helps the channel grow.

I'm almost finished my old Matchbox 'Hook in Canadian Forces markings, and after looking at this tooling I'm relegating it to the bottom shelf... I do have an Italeri version that I modded with the fat tanks to represent the new RCAF Chinook, which was a lot better.

No door mini guns or ramp M60? It would also be nice to have crew too, you could use them in the Sea King kits as well. But apart from that, it looks amazing. Well done airfix.

Looks like a nice kit, great review MOS. I'm disappointed in the ground only options for display with the drooped blades and lack of any seated crew however, not a trend I like at Airfix when they're trending up in quality of molded parts....but there it is... Cheers, Chris

Even if they hadn't modelled the droop in, they would still droop on the kit. The composite blades as supplied, droop on the real thing, but they *really don't curve a lot,* so this is going to look excessively curved. Un-drooped ones conversely would droop the correct amount. Methinks hot water and a bit of weight might fix them.

talking to an ex pilot, the UK rarely put the undercarriage up.. if you see footage of them in UK colours they never bothered with putting the undercarriage away.. but its a good discussion to have.. pilots are a debate along side gloss before decals, brown was or black wash, wheels up or down lol

Was there from '79 to '84. Wessex, Puma and Chinook on 240 OCU then 7 Sqn. & off to FI to replace 18sqn. What a dump, what a great time! If you want 1/48 better grab an Italeri one, because I don't see Airfix ever doing it. With this kit, I'm only really aquainted with BN in her FI period after handing over to 7 Sqn. It looks generally correct, but the seats are solid. That's going to look pretty iffy considering the fact the are directly behind the windows.
